FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES., Arpin, P.E., foreword.
1 Arpin, P.E., foreword. FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES.
Ottawa Civil Aviation Branch, Department of Transport Soft Cover Very Good
112 pp + blank pages for notes, oblong (7 15/16" H x 10 1/2" D). No date. Erratum sheet laid in. "From aviation's earliest days, pilots of aircraft have been conscious of the need for accurate directional information. The development of the magnetic and gyro compass has, for general purposes, kept pace with aviation needs in most areas of the world. Flight operations in Northern Canada, however, present problems which are unique by virtue of the position of the North Magnetic Pole. - - In response to a need for the provision of directional information simply and to within one degree the Flight Standards and Regulations Division of the Civil Aviation Branch has arranged the development of these tables from which the Sun's True Bearing can be extracted directly knowing date, correct Local Civil time (within reasonable limits) and approximate Latitude and Longitude. - - It is also significant to note that these Tables are not limited to Canada only, but include any areas of the earth north of 40 degrees North Latitude, and for all practical purposes will maintain usable accuracy for an indefinite period." From the Foreword. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownwership marks. Exterior - small soiling mark on top of textblock, some very light rubbing/soiling on rear cover.

2 Barr, Luke. PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE.
New York Clarkson Potter 2013 0307718344 / 9780307718341 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
309 pp, 8 1/2" H. "In the winter of (1970), more or less coincidentally, six iconic culinary figures, including Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher, found themselves together in the South of France. They cooked and ate and talked late into the night about the future of food in America, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery. The pioneering food writer M.F.K. Fisher had arrived on an ocean liner, traveling in grand style. The already iconic Julia Child, star of the television show 'The French Chef', was returning to her vacation home, La Pitchoune, wondering just how 'French' she wanted to be. Simone Beck, Child's coauthor of the seminal 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', was there, too, at her family's estate. James Beard, meanwhile, was working on his most ambitious book, 'American Cookery', while enrolled at a nearby diet clinic. And the reclusive chef Richard Olney, whose first book, 'The French Menu Cookbook', had just been published, was living in Provence and pointing the way to a new kind of culinary bohemianism. Here were America's leading voices in the food world - joined by renowned cookbook editor Judith Jones - all converging in Provence, and yet, incredibly, some were meeting for the first time. Drawing in large part on M.F.K. Fisher's detailed journals and letters, her grandnephew has re-created what is in retrospect a pivotal moment - when the democratization of cooking and taste became part of the national conversation in America. His dramatic retelling of those few weeks in the hills above the Cote d'Azur conjurs conversations and meals, arguments and unspoken rivalries." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, several very small dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, patches of very light browning, a few very small light stins on fron panel, faint liquid mark at top 2" of front flap fold.

MURDER IN AMSTERDAM. THE DEATH OF THEO VAN GOGH AND THE LIMITS OF TOLERANCE., Buruma, Ian.
4 Buruma, Ian. MURDER IN AMSTERDAM. THE DEATH OF THEO VAN GOGH AND THE LIMITS OF TOLERANCE.
New York Penguin 2006 1594201080 / 9781594201080 First Edition (remainder mark). Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Signed by author on half title page. "It was the emblematic crime of our moment: On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, Mohammed Bouyeri, the son of Moroccan immigrants, shot and killed the celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie with the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali that 'insulted the prophet Mohammed'. After Bouyeri shot Van Gogh, he calmly stood over the body and cut his throat with a curved machete, as if performing a ritual sacrifice, which in a very real sense he was. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a country that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Shortly thereafter, Ian Buruma returned to the country of his childhood to investigate the event and its larger meaning. The result is his masterpiece: a book with the intimacy and narrative brilliance for which Buruma is renowned. (His) entire life's work has led him to this story - the tale of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West, and tolerance finds its limits." Small remainder mark on bottom of text block, light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wear/wrinkling.

Yale University Press, New Haven, 2001, first edition.
492 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 030090625 B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he first history of what was once viewed as the heart of the American city. It tells the fascinating story of how downtown - and the way Americans thought about downtown - changed over time. By showing how businessmen and property owners worked to promote the well-being of downtown, even at the expense of other parts of the city, it also gives a riveting account of spatial politics in urban America. Drawing on a wide array of contemporary sources, (the author) brings downtown to life, first as 'the' business district, then as the central business district. His book vividly recreates the long-forgotten battles over subways an d skyscrapers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. And it provides a fresh, often startling perspective on elevated highways, parking bans, urban redevelopment, and other controversial issues. This groundbreaking book will b e a r e velation to scholars, city planners, policymakers, and general readers interested in American cities and American history." Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1972, book club edition.
241 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "The explosion which followed Kapitanleutnant Schweiger's curt order to fire on the afternoon of 7 May 1915 far exceeded even his most fervid imaginings. For the torpedo which streake d away from U 20 in response to his command sent to the bottom of the sea the liner Lusitania and with her 1,195 innocent men, women and children, many of them citizens of neutral America and the howl of indignation which followed this cold-b l o o d e d atrocity resounded throughout the world...(The author) looks at the German side of the picture and in the process raises some very topical moral issues. When two countries are at war is it to be total or limited war and, if the latter, w ho i s to d e fine the limits? The problem was to bedevil the German Submarine Service throughout the First World War as the Kaiser and his Admirals weighed and reweighed the effects of the British blockade against the value of American neutra lit y a nd no in cid en t, except perhaps the invasion of Belgium, more clearly defined the problem than the sinking of the Lusitania. Edwyn Gray tells the exciting story of those extraordinarily brave submariners, some like Schweiger, utterly rut hles s, o the rs the very pa ragon of chivalry. Given the facts the reader is left ot make his own judgement as to the ethics of their behaviour..." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 186 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "(T)he first full-length critical examination of this acclaimed author/illustrator's work. In her thoughtful, concise study, Ruth K. MacDonald argues that Dr. Seuss has earned his place as the most popular author/illustrator for children in America because of his unique ability to write stories of high quality while working within the restrictive format of the easy reader, a story told in simple words and sentences that maintains the interest of children just learning to read. MacDonald believes that Dr. Seuss's work, which has until now remained largely ignored as literature because of its mass appeal, not only celebrates the particularly American trait of individuality, but also challenges the limits and conventions of children's literature. In her chronological survey of his work and her investigation of his influence upon other authors and illustrators, MacDonald shows that it is his genius, not clever marketing techniques, that has led to Dr. Seuss's marvelous and longstanding popularity - a chronology, and selected bibliography are included." 192 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1861263198 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, drawings, diagrams, reproductions. "The Supreme Allied Commander in World War Two, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, on ce said that the jeep was one of the three tools that won the War, and today's Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee models are its direct descendants. The US Army requirement was for a light reconnaissance vehicle that would also provide light armou r e d s u p p o rt for the infantry. It needed to be able to travel off-road at speed and carry four people. Four-wheel drive and a powerful engine were considered essential, but the three initial manufacturers, Bantam, Willys-Overland and Ford, so on c h an ge d th e fragile lightweight buggy envisaged by the Army into the tough, quarter-ton truck we recognize today. It survived in harsh conditions with limited maintenance, carried loads in excess of its design limits and became a symbol of th e A ll ied fo rc es. Willy-Overland were able to acquire the post-war commercial rights to the Jeep, introducing their first civilian model in 1945. The CJ (for Civilian Jeep) series had to compete against ex-military Jeeps that were chea p to buy , bu t d espi te t his and other difficult trading conditions, new Jeeps found ready buyers. Since then Jeep has changed hands four times. Successive owners have evolved the range, but have stayed true to the original concept of a powe rful engin e, fo ur-w heel drive , go od gr o und clearance and supreme off-road capability. Bill Munro tells the full story of the Jeep, from pre-war Bantam to today's Wrangler, in this carefully researched book. Far from being just another histo ry of the m ilitar y Jee p, th is cov ers t he civ il ian Jeep in detail, and gives the reader a clear insight into the continued development of one of the world's most successful motor vehicles." "In the concluding volume of his study of the Canadian North since Confederation, Morris Zaslow details with encyclopedic scope the accelerating change typical of the second half of that era. In this period the frontiers of agriculture and industry swept northward from near the international border to their economic limits. In the search for oil and natural gas, these limits were also close to the country's physical limits. Assisted by new roads, extended railways, improved river transportation, and the new airplane, settlers, prospectors, and developers cleared land, sought mineral treasures, opened enterprises, and established permanent settlements in areas formerly given over to hunting and trapping by the native peoples. At the same time, the institutions of society and government familiar to southern Canada followed at a more measured pace."
