732 pp, 9 1/4" H. "This bibliography lists and annotates material published between 1960 and 1970 of interest to the serious student of the Indians and Metis in Canada. A team of researchers worked through books, monographs, journals, theses, unpublished papers and reports, publications by Indians, and federal and provincial government documents to generate over three throusand entries covering a multi-disciplinary range of aspects of current society and culture. Some aspects such as physical anthropology, biomedicine, archaeology, and linguistics had to be excluded, however. Both English- and French-language sources were covered. The entries are arranged by topic or tribe, and there is an index to assist in cross-reference or finer selection. Of special note is the Case Law Digest, which describes briefly the facts and decisions of all significant legal cases involving Indians since 1867. The systematic exposition of these decisions should help increase understanding of the legal situation in which Indians now live." The dictionary is intended to provide the meaning, or meanings, of such terms and, where relevant, their pronunciation, etymology, and scope - both in time and space; moreover, through dated quotations, an extensive cross-referencing system, illustrative drawings, and explanatory notes relating to usage, disputed origins and other contentious matters, the editors have sought to create an informative, entertaining, and valuable reference work. Finally, the dictionary should demonstrate that a substantial vocabulary relating to both today and yesterday has been developed by Canadians in pursuing their many activities throughout their vast and varied homeland." from the Introduction. A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER., Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler.
6 Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler. A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER.
London Routledge for the Centre of Performance Research 1995 0415053080 / 9780415053082 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good+
272 pp, 11 5/8" H. "(S)ubtly juxtaposes the visual demonstrations of the performer's craft, from a wealth of Oriental and Occidental sources, to uncover knowledge of action in the heightened context of performance - from combat to religion and ritual. Whereas most Western research is concerned with naturalism and psychological realism in acting, the Dictionary focuses on the performer's arduous and eclectic craft. More than just a dictionary, however, it is a handbook for theatre practitioners and a guide for students and scholars of transcultural performance. It is a result of ten years' research conducted by Eugenio Barba and the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) based in Denmark. ISTA works with practitioners of theatre and dance from the major Oriental and Occidental traditions to study the underlying principles of the performer's technique. The Dictionary aims to expand our knowledge of the possibilities of the scenic body, and of the spectator's response to the dynamics of performance. (It) has practical sections on balance, opposition and montage, among other techniques, and discusses issues including 'The Text and the Stage', 'The Dilated Body', and 'Energetic Language'. The visual essay of photographs, drawings and diagrams which runs parallel to the text is skilfully constructed to complement the textual argument. The result is not only a lavishly illustrated sourcebook on Western and non-Western theatre - much of it until now little known - but an inspiring tribute to the secret art of the performer." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny dint on fore-edge of text block, old stock label on rear cover, minor rubbing.

PRIVATE WORDS: LETTERS AND DIARIES FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Blythe, Ronald, ed.
9 Blythe, Ronald, ed. PRIVATE WORDS: LETTERS AND DIARIES FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Viking, London, 1991, first edition.
310 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0670832049 "The Second World War was, among other things, a great 'reading and writing' war. There was a passion for books of all kinds, and also a remarkable outpouring of personal w riting in the form of letters and diaries. The latter were actually forbidden in the services because they might fall into enemy hands, but this did not prevent them from being kept in startling quantities. The young especially, whether on t h e H o m e Front or fighting abroad, became extraordinary self-examiners and communicators, finding all kinds of outlets for what was happening to them in the shape of private records and correspondence. It was a time when people lived for let t er s, a n d wh en , since much of the war was spent in boredom by the average participant, reading became the perfect escape. The existence of a vast archive of Second World War personal literary expression has been well-known to historians, but i t h as not o ft en bee n used to reveal the significance of the 'reading and writing' culture of this period. Ronald Blythe has a deep understanding of those days and in this collection of letters and journals has revealed much of their heart a nd soul . Half of th e b ook is made up of the wartime writing of his friends; the other half has been drawn from the Department of Documents at the Imperial War Museum. This book is a personal statement that makes eloquent shifts from pain, desp air and de ath t o ab surd ity, lau ghter and bravery. It is a traveller's tale and a stay-at-home's tale. It is politically hopeful and romantic, and also down to earth. Read together, these confessions and descriptions from and to a Britain of nea rly h alf a cen tury ago c reate an a stonishing impact. We see a world holding itself together by language, by words, and with skill and determination. The 'tone' of those days is often quite unbearably caught, with force and eloquence. (T hey c reate) a m ultiple auto biogra phy of a uni que kind." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at top edge of rear panel. Fine/Near Fine

Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." 16 Chambers, W. CHAMBERS'S HISTORICAL AND MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS, EMBRACING HISTORY, SCIENCE, LITERATURE, ARTS, &C. (CHAMBER'S).
William and Robert Chambers, London, 1866.
In two sections: Historical - 204 pp; Miscellaneous - 209 pp., small 8vo, hard cover - no dust jacket. Small b&w illus within text. "The present work is designed to fulfil an important purpose in EDUCATION - that of bringing clearly into view the leading facts which are supposed to be gained through a long course of instruction. Without proposing to supersede the elementary books usually employed, it offers a certain test of what is presumed to have been previously learned. With such a work in their hands, Schoolmasters, Tutors, Governesses, or Parents, may at once satisfy themselves as to the degree of knowledge on a variety of subjects attained by the young persons under their charge, and for whose intellectual culture they feel a special interest. At the same time - in this age of Competitive Examination - the work offers to candidates for Official Appointments the means of readily and perspicuously calling to remembrance answers to such questions in History, Science, Art, Literature, and General Knowledge, as are likely to be asked of them; thereby, perhaps, saving the reperusal of a multiplicity of books which they would otherwise have to consult and patiently study. As regards the Answers to the Questions, every effort has been made to render them brief and of easy acquisition, in regular consecutive order according to subjects; while the facts they present, based on the most recent authorities, are just those which, from their interest and importance, are expected to be less or more borne on the mind of every 'well-informed person' of either sex." Interior - browning to pages/endpapers, some light 'thumbing' to margins, light brown stain at bottom corner of preliminaries - overall sound with no writing/names, etc. Exterior - light/moderate edge wear/rubbing, light corner wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, dust staining to text block edges, light scuffing to spine. Others have recorded local place names and the legends that surround them, or the yarns and tall tales transmitted from one generation to the next. THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION., Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation.
18 Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation. THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION.
Toronto Prospero 2001 1552671801 / 9781552671801 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
298 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H). "Numerically the largest group of Native North Americans, the Ojibway were the first to have a history written by one of their own people. Published in 1850, its author, George Copway, or Kah-ge-g a-gah-bowh, had already achieved a certain amount of fame delivering passionate lectures in North America and Europe. Attired in traditional Ojibway dress, Copway held up the virtues of tribal life while promoting mid-nineteenth-century ideas on education. Arguing for a separate Native North American state, Copway garnered considerable support from both Natives and non-Natives. (This), Copway's finest book, is in many ways a summation of his lectures. Written primarily for a non- Native audience, Copway viewed the book as an attempt to 'awaken a deeper feeling' toward the people of the First Nations. Much more than a history, the work in an exploration of Ojibway culture through which Copway had sought to induce the British and American governments to greater efforts in improving their relationships with Native North Americans." 19 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

New York W.W. Norton 2009 0393061027 / 9780393061024 4th Printing Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ R. Crumb.
Unpaginated, 11 1/8" H. "Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, retells the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a takeoff of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated with the Bible's language, 'a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions', that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation assembled primarily from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Version. Now readers of every persuasion - Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers - can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic and even juicy stories." Profusely illustrated in b&w comic strip fashion at an "adult" level, with an Introduction and Commentary by Crumb. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.
