THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT., Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel.
3 Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT.
Gale & Polden, Aldershot, 1952, Ist edition.
156 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Results of 1952 Royal Tournament laid-in. B&w photos, reproductions. "Fifty-three Tournaments have passed since the first 'Grand Assault-at-Arms' at Islington for the benefit of the volunteers of London and any Regular troops stationed 'within convenient range'. In 1883 the declared object was simply the promotion of skill-at-arms, but gradually the charitable side asserted itself until both aspects were recognized as being of equal importance. Both objects have been successfully achieved. This story tells of those early days when the sword, lance and bayonet were the main weapons of the Queen's soldiers, and describes the means by which the Tournament encouraged their skilful use. It traces the gradual decline of these weapons from the appearance of the early Maxim and Gatling guns which were diplayed in mimic warfare in the presence of enthusiastic audiences at Islington. In addition to showing development in arms and warfare, the Tournament has year by year demonstrated the progress made in the art of training the Service man in his profession..." Small surface scuff on half-title page near gutter, light wrinkle at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, very small dent to top edge of both boards, minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price clipped, has small chips and tears with creases, light edge wear/wrinkling, light to moderate rubbing/soiling on rear panel. VG -/G-

BRITISH REGULAR CAVALRY, 1644-1914., Cooper, Leonard.
7 Cooper, Leonard. BRITISH REGULAR CAVALRY, 1644-1914.
London Chapman & Hall 1965 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
216 pp, 8vo (8 3/4"). Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Mr. Cooper takes up his story with the formation of Cromwell's New Model Army, which marked a significant change in cavalry tactics, and closes it with a chapter devoted to the South African War and the years up to the beginning of the 1914 War. In addition, he has written an epilogue to cover the period of cavalry's gradual surrender to mechanisation. Between these points lie nearly three hundred years of history and countless battles which depended for their outcome on the ability and efficiency of the cavalry arm. (He) does not attempt to describe each of these battles in detail; rather, he is concerned, by giving accounts of a series of battles typical of a campaign, or of aspects of the training and tactics of cavalry - Blenheim, Dettingen, Salamanca, Waterloo, Balaclava, etc. - to give a historical impression of the arm's growth and achievements." Short crease at top of pages 73 to 80 - causes some indentation on adjacent pages, minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, soft creasing at top of rear panel, faint foxing and browning .

20 Selby, John. Foreword by Major-General F.C. Graham. THE THIN RED LINE OF BALACLAVA.
London Hamish Hamilton 1970 241019001 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good-
257 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w and colour illustrations - photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "(T)he Charge (of the Light Brigade) was only a vivid firework display on the fringe of the main action. It was the Highland Brigade and in particular the 93rd Highlanders, the 'Thin Red Line' of the title, under the inspiring leadership of Sir Colin Campell who really saved the day. This new narrative of the battle, based exclusively on eye-witness reports from British, French and Russian sources, presents the conflict as a coherent whole. Here are Raglan, Cardigan, Lucan, Campbell and Scarlett; Bosquet and Canrobert; the staff officers, the surgeons, the lady spectators, the war corres-pondents, the ordinary soldiers on both sides. The political manoeuvring, the armies arriving in the Crimea, the Allied success at Alma, the ravages of cholera, Inkerman 'the soldier's battle', Tchernaya, the storming of the Redan, the siege of Sebastopol, the influence of Florence Nightingale and Maitre-chef Soyer - this is the Crimean War, a struggle which need not have taken place, which produced no decisive solution, and which demonstrated with appalling clarity the inefficiencies of the British High Command." Light edge wear - mainly on bottom edge of boards, a few tiny shallow bumps to bottom edge of boards, small bump at bottom corner of rear boards - migrates into corner of approx. last 12 page leaves, minor browning to top edge of boards, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one or two tiny edge tears, very light browning on spine and at top edge.
