50 FOODS: THE ESSENTIALS OF GOOD TASTE WITH NOTES ON WINE., Behr, Edward.
3 Behr, Edward. 50 FOODS: THE ESSENTIALS OF GOOD TASTE WITH NOTES ON WINE.
New York Penguin 2013 1594204519 / 9781594204517 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Mikel Jaso.
416 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(P)resents simple, practical information about buying, using, preparing, and enjoying (50 foods). Behr focuses on aroma, appearance, flavor, and texture to determine what 'the best' means for each of the fifty foods, including a guide to selecting top quality - signs of freshness and ripeness, best season, top varieties, proper aging. Each entry includes tips on how best to prepare, serve, or eat each food (how to open an oyster, why the best way to cook green beans is boiling, how to clean a whole salted anchovy, when to eat and when to discard the rind of a cheese). Behr also names the most complementary foods and wines for each of these marvelous foods. Most of the fifty foods are raw materials, but some have been fermented or otherwise transformed - into bread, ham, cheese. Six of the fifty are cheeses. As Behr explains, cheese is probably the best food, as wine is the best drink. He argues that food tastes more delicious when it is closer to nature. Skilled low technology - more traditional methods - is almost always superior to high technology. But with scientific insight, the old methods can be refined to achieve more consistent high quality. We can't always have the best, but with the information in this book we can eat better every day. Knowing good food is part of a complete understanding of the world - part of a full enjoyment of nature, a full experience of the senses, and a full life." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very slight lean to spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling, plain white label over barcode.

John Murray, London, 1989, first edition.
179 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0719546923 8 colour illustrations. "This is not a cookbook in the usual sense. Nor is it strictly a travel book though it does tell somehing of far lands (Afghanistan, Roumania, Iran, Turkey, France, etc.) and circumstances, of local dishes in local settings from Rothschild feasts to Turcoman tents and the tables of Hollywood. Lesley Blanch herself describes it as a sketchbook, a work of nostalgia which evokes dishes, pl a c e s a n d people encountered while on the move through life. Here are Pushtu kebabs of lamb marinated in yoghurt and vinegar, shared with dusty but sumptuous Afghan horsemen, their eyes rimmed with kohl and their guns studded with turquoise; h er e br ea d a nd velvet - rough brown bread and thick clotted cream, offered at a Turkish wedding feast. Here also is kasha pilaff of buckwheat, egg and wild mushrooms, once cooked over a brushwood fire when partisans held up the Orient Express. An d her e a re 's tch ee' a la Stravinsky, Count Rumford's soup, cucumber sandwiches as Tolstoy ate them at Yasnaya Polyana, and 'tsuica' drunk to gypsy music in the garden restaurants of a Bucharest no longer to be found." London Oxford University Press 1967 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Lynton Lamb.
119 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). The first edition of this title in the Oxford Children's Library series. B&w illustrations by Lynton Lamb, dust jacket design by Glenys Ambrus. Originally published under the title: "L'Enfant et la Riviere". "This is the story of Pascalet and the river that at first filled him with fear and curiosity and later, when he knew it better, became his friend. It ran beyond the flat French fields that surrounded his home, and though he was forbidden to go to the river, once or twice every year the river came to him. It came when the flood waters ran swiftly over the low fields almost to Pascalet's door; but it came more urgently and mysteriously in the shape of Bargabot, the poacher, whose tempting talk of the joys that awaited those who ventured down to the water's edge filled Pascalet with a longing to escape from the monotony of his quiet home and seek for himself the magic beyond the fields. One fine spring day Pascalet's chance came to explore the river. He found there all the dangers his parents had warned him against, and many beautiful things beside, but chief among all he found Gatzo - a boy of his own age - and together they launched a boat and floated away into a world of enchantment: Pascalet dreaming and fearful, Gatzo sharp and practical and brave." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has minor wear and light edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA), Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman.
8 Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman. TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA)
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." A few very tiny edge bumps. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

9 Farmer, Penelope, ed. SISTERS: AN ANTHOLOGY.
London Allen Lane / Penguin Press 1999 0713993022 / 9780713993028 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
454 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). "As one of three sisters herself, Penelope Farmer sets her exploration of sisterhood in an autobiographical framework, describing loving and not so loving sisters in the past and present generations on all sides of her family. With the help of writers in many fields and over many centuries, she guides us through the peaks and troughs of sistery love, both between sisters and between sisters and brothers - from childhood, separation, love, marriage and parenthood, to old age and death itself. Famous literary sisters appear: the Brontes; Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell; the Mitfords; Mary Lamb and brother Charles; Vera Brittain. Alongside them the theatrical and musical ones: Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland; Maria Callas and her sister; Jacqueline du Pre and hers; Mozart and his sister. Then there are the well-known fictional sisters: the March sisters; Dorothea and Celia Brooke; the Schlegel sisters; Ursula and Gudrun from 'Women in Love'. And many not so well-known sisters, both fictional and non-fictional besides. We observe the sisterly bonds of bees, lions, elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. We are guided by Richard Dawkins through the genetics of ant colonies. And, throughout, we are asked to reflect on the nature of sisterhood itself. Is a sister born not made? What is the essence of the sisterly bond? What relationship does that bond have to the myth of sisterhood constructed around it? - a myth leading to all those symbolic sisterhoods, of nurses, nuns, feminists and so forth, a section on whom concludes the book. Through poetry, prose, autobiography, memoir, science and anthroplogy , Penelope Farmer pieces together the world of sisters and sisterhood, creating a rich tapestry of evocative and often moving writing that will find echoes in the experience of all who have or are sisters, or even just those who would like to have had them." Slight bump to top/bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, tiny dint on spine.

Toronto Peter Martin 1976 0887781454 / 9780887781452 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
256 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "On Friday, September 9, 1949, Edwin Boyd (a little drunk at the time) withdrew $2,300 from a Toronto suburban branch of the Bank of Montreal - at the point of a gun. Bullets whistled past Boyd's head as he left the bank. The manager emptied his revolver at the fleeing bandit, but missed every time. Perhaps if Boyd had been shot or captured in the keystone cops chase that followed, his career would have ended the day it began. But he wasn't and it didn't. Two years later, Boyd was the nation's most notorious bandit and the leader of a phenomenon known as 'The Boyd Gang'. The Canadian public was terrorized and screaming for blood - and still more titillating newspaper stories. When Toronto's Sgt. of Detectives Edmund 'The Chinaman' Tong (a Welshman) was gunned down by gang members, the public waited for the final act in the saga: retribution. But the real story - the intrigues, motives, love affairs, betrayals, and the modus operandi of both criminals and police - was more fascinating than the most lurid fabrications dreamed up by the press. This story is told here for the first time." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered very small scuff/rubbing marks - mainly on rear panel.
