"At Waterlo o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides." 215 pp, 9" H. B&w and colour photographs, b&w drawings/diagrams. "The prehistoric nomadic inhabitants of Canada had no writing, no large settlements, and very little in the way of lasting material things. Before Europeans came to North America they had no guns, no horses, no hard metals. What clues we have come primarily from the work of archaeologists sifting through the buried evidence - little bits of stone and bone and pottery, refuse heaps and fire pits, ancient villages and burials, fingerprints and prehistoric blood. Yet theirs is a long and triumphant story of survival, a story that is even now just beginning to be told." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, two small minoe corner creases, very slight lean to spine.

Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
312 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. Fold-out map. A facsimile of the edition published by Cassell and Company, London, 1916. "When Inspector Burton Deane left for Regina in 1883 to join the staff of the headquarters of the Royal North-West Mounted Police, he was told in Ottawa that he would find the Mounties an 'armed mob'. He was not disappointed. The ten-year-old force did not have one standing order or regulation, and it was his responsibility to compose regulations for the force, and to establish Mounted Police law. As adjutant to the commissioner and supervisor of the Regina post, he was responsible for establishing all administrative procedure, and he was always at the nerve-centre of every major development on the Prairies in those years. He administered the white man's dealings with the Indians, and in 1885 the captured Riel was put in his custody. His intimate contact with his prisoner makes fascinating reading. But shortly afterward, conflict with the controversial and difficult new commissioner, Lawrence Herchmer, led to his transfer to Lethbridge, where he was Supervisor for 'fourteen happy years'. His ardent persecution of cattle and horse thieves and smugglers led him to arrest a good friend of a Dominion Cabinet minister, winning him a transfer to the remote and tiny outpost of Maple Creek. There he patrolled a large section of the Canadian Pacific Railway, until friendlier forces in government assigned him to command of the post at Calgary." Faint line indentation across spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, knife cut across spine - archivally taped on inside, very small tear at bottom of rear flap-fold - archivally taped.

Bloodlist - 200 pp, 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441067956 - "I've always had a weak spot for strange ladies. One very beautiful girl had even warned me that she was - get this - a vampire. But did I listen? No. Well, before you know it, I'm being chased by an ugly thug with a gun, and a bullet blasts its way through my back, and - believe it or not - nothing happened. I survived! How? You guessed it. I, Jack Fleming, ace reporter, had been transformed into - a vampire! Which has its advantages. You never die, you never grow old, you sleep all day, and best of all - you can hunt down your own murderer." Book 2. Lifeblood - 202 pp, 1990 5th printing, ISBN 0441847765 - "As nosferatu go, I'm basically a nice guy. Sure, I need a little blood now and then, but I never meant to hurt anyone. Too bad some people don't feel the same about me. Now I've got a bunch of crazy vampire-hunters on my trail, armed with crosses, silver bullets, and sharp wooden stakes. How did they find out about me? Why are they - pardon the expression - out for my blood? I don't know, but I'm going to get some answers even if it kills me - again." Book 3. Bloodcircle - 202 pp, 1990 6th printing, ISBN 0441067174 - "As a vampire, I have a number of handy skills - I can hypnotize mortals, walk through walls, and shrug off bullets like insults. The one thing I haven't been able to manage, so far, is to find the woman who made me what I am. Until now. Her trail has led me to the palatial estate of a wealthy widow - and a two hundred-year-old gigolo with a taste for young blood. He claims not to know where my long-lost lady is - or who is trying to kill me - but then again, you can never trust a vampire." Book 4. Art in the Blood - 195 pp, 1991 1st printing, ISBN 0441859453 - "(W)hen the career of a talented young artist is fatally cut short, I know I won't sleep easy in my coffin until I find the killer. But the world of high art - with its big money, bigger egos, and expensive forgeries - makes even bloodsucking seem simple. And safer. Dead artists can live forever. An undead detective may not be so lucky - ." Book 5. Fire in theBlood - 198 pp, 1991 3rd printing, ISBN 0441859451 - "Even the dead have to work for a living. This time, a priceless heirloom bracelet's been stolen from the wealthy Sebastian Pierece. And guess who's been hired to find it? Pierce has plenty of hard cash, a soft heart - and a hot-blooded daughter named Marian. Marian has big eyes for yours truly - and a very jealous boyfriend. And me? I have a night job I can really sink my teeth into." Book 6. Blood on the Water - 199 pp, 1992 2nd printing, ISBN 044185947X - "There's a new crime boss in town and he's gunning for a vampire. So are the police. Lucky me. What's worse, my thirst for the red stuff is getting out of control. I'm not sure what scares me mroe: the mob - or the darkness gnawing at my gut. When Chicago gets this hot, even a vampire can get burned." Book 7. A Chill in the Blood - 327 pp, 1999 1st PB printing, ISBN 0441006272 - "(B)eing a vampire with morals is no midnight stroll on the streets of post-prohibition Chicago. In the city of sin, the gangs still rule - and they're on the brink of an all-out war. Neither crooks nor cops care how much blood, innocent or otherwise, flows during the fight. But Jack does. Caught between the local hoods and the boys from New York, Jack has to stop the battle before it starts. But how much of his remaining humanity will he have to give up to do it?" Book 9. Lady Crymsyn - 410 pp, 2001 1st PB printing, ISBN 0441008739 - "(Jack) has made a good bit of money cleaning up the streets of post-prohibition Chicago - enough to realize his long-time dream of owning a nightclub where a man can get a legal drink, and where Jack's songbird girlfriend can headline the floor show. But renovations on the speakeasy come to a crashing halt when workmen discover the skeletal remains of a woman's body - clad in a distinctive red dress - walled up in the basement. Jack may have become a creature of the night, but he's still a man with a strong sense of justice. And he won't rest until he finds out who killed the lady in red - even if it means resurrecting secrets the mob would kill to keep buried." Plus: Quincey Morris, Vampire - 336 pp, Baen Publishing 2001 first printing, ISBN 0671319844 - "Rough and ready Texan Quincey Morris thrust his Bowie knife into Dracula's heart, bringing an end to the quintessential battle between the living and the Un-Dead. It also brought an end to Quincey as he bled his life away into the chill earth of Transylvania. Or so he thought. Waking to the night, surrounded by ravenous wolves, he finds himself plunged into his greates adventure yet: life beyond life - as a vampire. To survive, he must quickly adapt to his dark change. At the hands of his savage mentor it's a hard, painful process, but Quincey is determined to escape the wilderness and return to his grieving friends. However, Professor Van Helsing has convinced them that the only good vampire is a dead one. Seen as an acolyte of their greatest enemy, can Quincey persuade them to accept his change, or will a lifetime of friendship end in bloody betrayal? And for whom?" "African myths convey the perennial wisdom of humanity: the creation of the world, the hero's journey, our relationship with nature, death, and resurrection. From the Ashanti comes the moving account of the grief-stricken Kwasi Benefo's journey to the underworld to seek his beloved wives. From Uganda we learn of the legendary Kintu, who won the love of a goddess and created a nation from a handful of isolated clans. The Congo's epic hero Mwindo is the sacred warrior who shows us the path each person must travel to discover his true destiny. Many myths reveal the intimacy of human and animal spirits, and Ford also explores the archetypal forces of the 'orishas' - the West African deities that were carried to the Americas in the Africa diaspora." 12 Frank, Barbara E. MANDE POTTERS & LEATHERWORKERS: ART AND HERITAGE IN WEST AFRICA.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, (1998), Ist printing.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1560987944 Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos and drawings. "Among the Mande-speaking groups dispersed throughout much of West Africa, certain artists - including potters and l eatherworkers - form a spiritually powerful social class in which gender determines craft specialization. Ceramic water jars and cooking pots are made only by the wives and female relatives of blacksmiths. Leather objects such as knife shea t h s , a m ulet cases, and, more recently, western-style shoes and bags are produced by male leatherworkers. While these objects display features common to those of other West African groups, the manner in which they are produced has remained dis ti nc tl y M an de . Analyzing the work of Mande potters and leatherworkers, (the author) argues that studying craft technologies in addition to object styles is essential to reconstructing the art heritage of an ethnically complex region. Drawing on ar cha eo lo gic al and historical evidence as well as her field research in Mali, she shows how tools and practices such as potters' use of convex molds and leatherworkers' adherence to specific knife blade shapes serve to distinguish the good s ma de b y Ma nde ar tist s f rom those of neighboring groups. She also discusses the pride the potters take in their healing and spiritual knowledge, and the sense of difference between craftsmen who specialize exclusively in leatherworking and those who doubl e as bar ds an d mu sicians. Examining the roles of Mande leatherworkers and potters in the rise and fall of empires, the development of trans-Saharan trade networks, and the spread of Islam, Frank questions the 'one-tribe, one-st yle' i nterp retati ons t hat h ave do minat ed studies of West African art. Focusing on two traditions that have been little studied, (this book) explores the complex, shifting relationships among the identities of Mande craftspeople, the objects they cr eate, and the techn ologie s they use." THE GATECRASHERS., Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner.
14 Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner. THE GATECRASHERS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1984, first edition.
297 pp + postscript, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718123786 Map endpapers. "Horribly cramped, it lurched sickeningly while being towed and tended to be dripping wet inside. The X-craft midget submarine was hardly the obvious choice of vessel to pitch against the mighty battleship 'Tirpitz' in her Norwegian lair. Like pitching a tadpole against a whale; but in this case, the whale had a soft underbelly and the tadpole a pair of two-ton explosive stings like blisters on its sides. If the sub could survive its nightmarish 1,000-mile haul across the North Sea, Paul Everard would have his chance to gatecrash the fjords - past minefields, patrol craft, shore defences and steel nets - and cripple the ship which Churchi ll had called 'the Beast'. Even if he succeeded, the chances of escaping alive were slim. If he failed, Nick Everard, commanding Arctic convoy PQ19, was in for a pounding. None of his ships could hope to match the firepower of the 'Tirpit z ' o r p i erce her fifteen-inch armour. As 'The Gatecrashers' draws to its thunderous climax, father and son, their lives balancing on a knife-edge, face their final, most searching test. 'The Gatecrashers' is based on the true story of Operat io n S ou rc e : si x X-craft crossed the North Sea in September 1943 to attack the 'Tirpitz, Scharnhorst' and 'Lutzow' in Altenfjord, where they were kept out of bomber range behind formidable defences. Although (this book) stands on its own as a nov el , it is al so th e ninth and last in the Everard series of naval adventures, which started with Nick as a somewhat bloody-minded midshipman at Jutland in 1916. Although fictional, the setting of each story is historically and technically ac cura te. Cap tai n J .E. Moo re, Editor of 'Jane's Fighting Ships', had written: 'I have not found this splendid authenticity in any naval fiction since C.S. Forester's heyday'." Faint cigarette odor. 15 Johnson, E.A. "Rick", Major, editor. Foreword by Colonel R.D. Russell. TRENTON: 50 YEARS OF AIR FORCE.
CFB Trenton 50th Anniversary Committee, Trenton, Ontario, 1981.
160 pp, oblong 8vo (8 5/8" H x 10 1/2" D), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "Ever since it was officially opened in 1931 the base of Trenton, Ontario has been the most important military airfield in Canada. It began as a flying training base and in the early war years was responsible for training flight instructors who in turn helped to train the thousands of pilots in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war the base remained the home of Central Flying School and pilot training continued to be the primary activity. Post war expansion of commercial air traffic to and from Toronto gradually began to interfere with the freedom of movement of the trainers and in 1961CFS was moved to the open skies of the prairies and Trenton became the home of Air Transport Command. Throughout its 50 year history many thousands of airmen and airwomen have lived and worked here. Countless thousands more have passed through, either on course or as air transport passengers. It is hoped that this book will be of interest to everyone who has been here, by providing information about what happened here before or since their particular time at Trenton and by offering a nostalgic look at some of the people, planes and places of their era." Minor edge wear, one tiny edge dint. Dust jacket has one 1" closed tear archivally taped, a knife cut across rear panel, light browning, small dint on rear flap -fold, a few tiny closed tears, minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Good+

16 Linderer, Gary A. BLACK BERETS AND PAINTED FACES: THE STORY OF A LRP IN VIETNAM. (THE EYES OF THE EAGLE / EYES BEHIND THE LINES.)
Garden City, New York Guild America 1991 Book Club Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
486 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "They were the men of F Co., 58th Infantry, LRPs Company (the Howlers) of the 101st Airborne. Now, in this exclusive 2-in-1 volume, comprising 'Eyes of the Eagle' and 'Eyes Behind the Lines', Gary Linderer takes you into the bush with the LRPs. There, you'll see everything he saw and experience everything he did. It began for Linderer when he volunteered to 'serve with the best of the best' in Nam. Within two weeks of landing at Bien Hoa Air Base, he raised his hand again to join the LRPs. He'd put himself in line for some of the hairiest assignments in Nam - performed with some unusual individuals. Linderer at times alternated walking point with a soldier who loved danger so much that he would roam out of touch with his team, or sneak beneath the perimeter wire at night with only a Ka-Bar knife. It didn't end until Linderer had been wounded several times, found himself a team leader surrounded by 'new meat', and won a battlefield commission! Along the way his missions ranged from booby-trapping a VC ams cache followed by a quick extraction back to base, to an operation that was supposed to last a few hours - and turned into a seven-day nightmare in a fog-shrouded valley 'Mr. Charles' called home. Join the men of F Company and see what it was like to be the 'eyes of the Eagle'!" Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing.

17 Litvinov, Ivy. HIS MASTER'S VOICE: A DETECTIVE STORY.
London Gollancz 1973 0575016884 / 9780575016880 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
192 pp, 8vo (8" H). "(A) police procedral novel that is, in itself, a marvellous evocation of Moscow during the late 1920s. The murder takes place in a smallish building that serves as porter's lodge to one of those huge faceless blocks of workers' dwellings, so typical of the period. The dead man - a rather unpleasant character - is killed by a knife wound in his jugular vein after he has been listening to a gramaphone record of Chaliapin singing the Volga Boat Song. The investigation is made by a senior police officer, District Procurator Nikulin, and Mrs Litvinov conforms to the very welcome modern habit of showing us something of the life and feelings of her splendidly realised policeman. The investigation which shows the reader several aspects of Moscow life, including the Ballet backstage, is again modern in its routine but it is no less gripping for that, and the writing throughout has an endearingly unsophisticated quality. The atmosphere of a Russian winter, and of the streets and buildings of Moscow in the twenties is wonderfully captured. The book was first published in 1930. Mrs. Litvinov has now added a fascinating Epilogue in which she relates how she came to write the story." Small bump at top corner of boards and approx. half the pages, previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper, minor browning to top of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

18 Lyons, F.S.L. CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1979 0192224931 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Irish history has traditionally been interpreted primarily in political terms as the struggle of an emerging nation to shake itself free of seven hundred years of English domination. The events of the last decade in Northern Ireland have led many people to realise that the reality is more complex, but this has left them if anything more confused than they were before. The purpose of this book is to trace concisely the outline of four conflicting cultures which co-exist in Ireland north and south. To bring their conflict to a focus they have been examined mainly within a narrow historical framework, the period 1890-1939 (defined by the two symbolic dates of the fall of Parnell and the death of Yeats), though there are some necessary excursions into a remoter past, especially in relation to Ireland. The underlying theme of the book is that no political solution has been or will be successful without a proper understanding of the intricacies of this interlocking pattern of cultures - Gaelic, English, Anglo-Irish, Ulster Protestant. The book is in essence an attempt to provide the historical basis for such an understanding." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, a previous owner's name in ink and faint erased pencil marks on free front endpaper, very light liquid stain in top margin of page 19, minor edge wear, small corner bump, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock. DIVERS. FROM PIPER ALPHA TO THE GULF WAR., May, Jon.
20 May, Jon. DIVERS. FROM PIPER ALPHA TO THE GULF WAR.
Coronet / Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1996.
245 pp, mass market paperback. ISBN 0340649062 B&w drawings. " Jon May is a paramedic who is also trained to control deep sea dive systems attached to the world's oil industry. This is his own true story, starting in the holocaust that was the P iper Alpha disaster and taking him from the North Sea to cleaning up offshore after the Kuwait War, to Bombay, the South China Sea and Vietnam. The work of the men who descend to great depths to difuse mines, check pipelines, and clear underwate r d isaster areas is described with absorbing documentary realism and a degree of gallows humour. From helping rescue a skipper trapped below deck on a sinking ship to treating a latterday victim of mustard gas, Jon May tells a story that is the s tu f f of so much fiction, but for knife-edged excitement there is nothing to beat the truth."
