PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE., Barr, Luke.
1 Barr, Luke. PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE.
New York Clarkson Potter 2013 0307718344 / 9780307718341 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
309 pp, 8 1/2" H. "In the winter of (1970), more or less coincidentally, six iconic culinary figures, including Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher, found themselves together in the South of France. They cooked and ate and talked late into the night about the future of food in America, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery. The pioneering food writer M.F.K. Fisher had arrived on an ocean liner, traveling in grand style. The already iconic Julia Child, star of the television show 'The French Chef', was returning to her vacation home, La Pitchoune, wondering just how 'French' she wanted to be. Simone Beck, Child's coauthor of the seminal 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', was there, too, at her family's estate. James Beard, meanwhile, was working on his most ambitious book, 'American Cookery', while enrolled at a nearby diet clinic. And the reclusive chef Richard Olney, whose first book, 'The French Menu Cookbook', had just been published, was living in Provence and pointing the way to a new kind of culinary bohemianism. Here were America's leading voices in the food world - joined by renowned cookbook editor Judith Jones - all converging in Provence, and yet, incredibly, some were meeting for the first time. Drawing in large part on M.F.K. Fisher's detailed journals and letters, her grandnephew has re-created what is in retrospect a pivotal moment - when the democratization of cooking and taste became part of the national conversation in America. His dramatic retelling of those few weeks in the hills above the Cote d'Azur conjurs conversations and meals, arguments and unspoken rivalries." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, several very small dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, patches of very light browning, a few very small light stins on fron panel, faint liquid mark at top 2" of front flap fold.

640 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Volume IV only. ISBN 0674403738 B&w illustrations. "With its Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the French Revolution opened a whole new stage in the history of women, despite t heir conspicous absence from the playbill. The coming century would see women put in their place as never before, their subordination to men codified in all manner of new laws and rules; and yet the period would also witness the birth of fem i n i s m , the unprecedented emergence of women as a collective force in the political arena. The fourth volume in this world-acclaimed series covers the distance between these two poles. It gives us a vibrant picture of a bourgeouis century, dy na mi c an d ex p ansive, in which woman's role in the home was stressed more and more, even as the economic pressures and opportunities of the industrial revolution drew her out of the house; in which woman's growing role in the family as the cente r o f a ll mo ra ls an d virtues pressed her into public service fighting social ills...." Attending luncheons, teas and dinners during the 1930's 'Frau Bella' met everybody of importance and gauged accurately what each person counted for in the developing storm. Among the many German leaders she knew wre General von Hindenberg, Franz von Papen, Goebbels, Goering, Himmler, filmaker Leni Riefenstahl and countless other political and social figures. In this secret journal, smuggled out piecemeal before she left Germany, Fromm describes her experiences and conversations with this cast of characters that would soon play shocking roles in Hitler's Third Reich. The gossip, dark secrets and Nazi maneuverings she discovered or intuited - but never reported in her column - appear here with startling immediacy." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges. THE INHERITOR'S POWDER: A TALE OF ARSENIC, MURDER, AND THE NEW FORENSIC SCIENCE., Hempel, Sandra.
7 Hempel, Sandra. THE INHERITOR'S POWDER: A TALE OF ARSENIC, MURDER, AND THE NEW FORENSIC SCIENCE.
New York W.W. Norton 2013 0393239713 / 9780393239713 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
278 pp, 9 1/2" H. "In the first half of the nineteenth century, an epidemic swept Europe: arsenic poisoning. Available at any corner shop for a few pence, arsenic was so frequently used by potential beneficiaries of wills that it was nicknamed 'the inheritor's powder'. But it was difficult to prove that a victim had been poisoned, let alone to identify the contaminated food or drink since arsenic was tasteless. Then came a riveting case. (When, after three days of agony) wealthy George Bodle died, (he left) behind several heirs, including a son and grandson - both of whom were not on the best of terms with the family patriarch. The investigation brought together a colorful cast of characters: bickering relatives; a drunken, bumbling policeman; and James Marsh, an unknown but brilliant chemist who, assigned the Bodle case, attempted to create a test that could accurately pinpoint the presence of arsenic. In doing so, however, he would cause as many problems as he solved. Were innocent men and women now going to the gallows? And would George Bodle's killer be found? Incisive and wryly entertaining, science writer Sandra Hempel brings to life a gripping story of domestic infighting, wayward police behavior, a slice of Victorian history, stories of poisonings, and an unforgettable foray into the origins of forensic science." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very small bump at top of rear hinge.

Toronto McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1976 0070823405 / 9780070823402 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good - Alan Daniel, cover art.
179 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). The award-winning Canadian author's first novel. " 'Every year a new mate; it is beyond imagining. New feathers to rustle, new beaks to bang, new dense, twiggy nests to construct.' muses Judith Gill as she and her husband and children watch a television program on birds. Every-thing, from the suburban house she and her family live in to her choice of friends, has been made along conventional lines. As she herself says, 'I never think anymore of the kind of life I once wanted to have'. She has built around her life a hedge of restraint, 'a violet-tinted reserve', deriving her pleasures from small, everyday ceremonies which add their own unique flavour and colour. That delicate balance between the obvious and the mysterious forms the focus as Judith observes and investigates the hidden drives and motives of her own life, the lives of the people around her and the life of the pioneer woman she is dissecting for a book, Susanna Moodie. Judith's husband is elusive, her children remote, her friends motivated by needs and aspirations she herself has long abandoned. Untangling the entrapment of facts and fictions leads her to heightened self- awareness and rather surprising discoveries." Previous owner's bookplate with blacked out name on free front endpaper, minor edge wear, one page with tiny corner crease, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small edge tear, very light rubbing/soiling on rear panel, a few tiny edge chips.

Prince Aidan, caring not at all about the power of a human man, swears to destroy his nephew's murderer, even if he must bring down the fortress of Alamut stone by stone. RHODESIA., Todd, Judith.
17 Todd, Judith. RHODESIA.
London MacGibbon & Kee 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
170 pp, 8 3/4" H. "Judith Todd sets out some facts on the origins of the dispute over Rhodesia (the current Zimbabwe). As the daughter of a former Prime Minister she is in a good position to know part of the story from the inside. Her father is now 'restricted' by an order made by an illegal government. Miss Todd was brought up on a mission station in Rhodesia and while she understands perfectly well the European achievement in this part of Africa, she has seen also that it is not enough. Not at least while the great majority of the population is thwarted politically and socially underprivileged to an extreme degree. Their leaders are cajoled, penalised; their sympathisers are made victims of the most crude political enmity - amounting almost to hysteria. Miss Todd is devoted to the best and long-lasting aspirations of this beautiful country. She can, therefore, bear the revilement that the friends of the misguided and ultimately doomed Rhodesian government have to offer. Patriotism may well not be enough; but justicce and freedom are necessary foundations to any patriotism deserving of the name." Chapter headings: 'The Police and the Army are Ready'; In the Beginning; The Essence of Discrimination; Right Turn Ahead; Sowing the Seeds; Where the Banished Ones Sleep; White Myths and Black Realities; Civilised Standards; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness; 'The Respect for the Opinions of Mankind'; Happy New Year!; Not the End of the World; The Consent of the Governed. Previous owner's signature, place and date in ink on front free endpaper, scattered tiny light foxing marks on rear endpapers and on edges of text block, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. 312 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "Murder - a dark, shameful deed, the last resort of the desperate or a vile tool of the greedy. And a very strange obsession. But where did this fixation develop? And what does it tell us about ourselves? (The author) explores this phenomenon in forensic detail, revisiting notorious crimes like the Ratcliff Highway Murders, which caused a nationwide panic in the early nineteenth century, and the case of Frederick and Maria Manning, the suburban couple who were hanged after killing Maria's lover and burying him under their kitchen floor. Our fascination with crimes like these became a form of entertainment, inspiring novels and plays, prose and paintings, poetry and true-crime journalism. At a point during the birth of the modern era, murder entered the popular psyche, and it's been a part of us ever since. (This) is a unique exploration of the art of crime - and a riveting investigation into the English criminal soul - by one of our finest historians."
