New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS., Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.)
3 Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.) NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS.
Philadelphia Chilton 1966 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
242 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Napoleon, that master strategist, created twenty-six Marshals of France between the years 1804 and 1815. These men, who held the highest positions in the Empire after Napoleon himself, came from diverse, and often humble backgrounds. Among the twenty-six were officers, sergeant majors, rankers, apprentices, a farmer's boy, a brewer, a poet, a smuggler, an actor, a barber, and a prince. The two qualities they all had in common were courage and ambition. During the years when Napoleon was conqueror of most of Europe, the marshals acquired titles and great riches, and in the end there was only one who was not to some extent corrupted by greed or ambition, and who remained loyal to the man who had elevated them all to power. Through their stories, and the eyes of the author, the entire panorama of French history, from the first days of the French Revolution until the restoration of the Bourbons, is seen. The color and excitement of the great battles, the strategy, the roll of history is here in (this book), the first to follow the actual careers of the marshals from July, 1789, until their deaths." Light cigarette odor, a few pages with small a soft wrinkle at top corner, very light browning to top and fore-edge of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light browning at top edge, very light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

London Rupert Hart-Davis 1965 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4"H). "When Napoleon left Egypt in August, 1799, he was deserting a plague-ridden force, whose numbers had been reduced by half since they first landed fourteen months before. Their pay was four million francs in arrear and all ranks were in a state of near-mutiny against their Commander-in-Chief, whose real purpose in Egypt, they alleged, was to augment his personal glory. But by November 9th, the 18th Brumaire, Napoleon had so regained the support of the Army in Paris that he was able to drive out the elected representatives of the French people at bayonet-point from the Orangery of St Cloud, and assume supreme power." Scattered foxing marks to top and bottom edges of textblock, minor wrinkling to bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, light to moderate rubbing/scuffing on rear panel, two s,all creases a top edge of front panel.
