PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948., Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward.
1 Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward. PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948.
New York Harper 2012 0062030310 / 9780062030313 Very Good+ Very Good+
467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

3 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

HITLER & GELI., Hayman, Ronald.
4 Hayman, Ronald. HITLER & GELI.
London Bloomsbury 1997 0747527237 / 9780747527237 First Edition Very Good Very Good
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, family tree. "Few people know about the affair Adolf Hitler had with his niece, Geli Raubal. It started in 1927, when he was thirty-eight and she was nineteen. Already leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, he had been imprisoned after the unsuccessful putsch of 1923, released at the end of 1924 and had been banned from speaking in public. It was then that he decided to rent a house in Obersaltzberg, an small alpine village close to the Austrian border. Geli came to live with him there, together with her mother, Angela Raubal, his widowed half-sister, but the ban was lifted before the Raubals moved in. Hitler could relax with his niece as he never had before with anyone else, and enjoyed her constant availability. He adored her and they could talk to each other uninhibitedly. The couple shared a strangely intense, passionate relationship, but it was always dogged by Hitler's intolerance, his chauvinistic attitude to womanhood and his possessive jealousy. Later, the weakening of the bond between (them) coincided with the phenomenal rise in the popularity of the Nazis. In 1931, aged twenty-three, Geli Raubal was found dead in the Munich flat she shared with Hitler, his revolver on the floor and an unfinished letter on the table. Hitler was shattered by his niece's death, and for the rest of his life couldn't speak of her without becoming emotional. (This book) examines the degeneracy in the family Hitler and Geli came from and the emotional and sexual problems Hitler suffered, thus giving the reader an opportunity to take new bearings on Hitler as a man." Light browning to pages and edges of text block, slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling.

THE KAISER: A LIFE OF WILHELM II, LAST EMPEROR OF GERMANY., Kurenberg, Joachim von. Translated by H.T. Russell and Herta Hagen.
6 Kurenberg, Joachim von. Translated by H.T. Russell and Herta Hagen. THE KAISER: A LIFE OF WILHELM II, LAST EMPEROR OF GERMANY.
London Cassell 1954 First British Edition Very Good Very Good-
370 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w plates. "(The author) first met Kaiser Wilhelm when serving as a Guards officer in Potsdam. His associations at this time and his subsequent life in the German Embassies at Constantinople, Rome and Vienna, provided him with experience of Court circles which enables him to reproduce, in all essentials, the atmosphere of the pre-1914 period of the Kaiser's life. Appointed as biographer by the Kaiser at Doorn, he was able to consult his subject frequently, and the results of these numerous interviews are incorporated in the text of the work, so that the Kaiser's point of view is given in juxtaposition to the judgement of others. To assist the reader further in passing judgement on the man, the opinions of the Kaiser's colleagues, his friends, relatives and enemies, are also interwoven. This life is primarily a personal biography, the intention being to provide a full portrait of the man rather than a study of his times. The author had full access to the State Archives in Berlin and Potsdam, and his work is fully documented." Minor edge wear, slight bump at bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small edge tears - one with crease, light rubbing/soiling - mostly on rear panel, a few tiny scuffs, one or two foxing marks on flaps.

7 Lloyd, Christopher. ST VINCENT & CAMPERDOWN. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The year 1797 witnessed two of the greatest victories in British naval history: St. Vincent and Camperdown. These battles were of decisive importance in the war against revolutionary France since the defeat of the Spanish Fleet in February, and of the Dutch Fleet eight months later, effectively frustrated the French 'Grand Strategy' of invading Ireland and England. An attempt, inspired by the Irish patriot, Wolfe Tone, had been made at the end of the previous year to land a French force in Bantry Bay, but it was a blizzard, rather than the efforts of the English navy, which forced the enemy fleet to return to Brest. The British were lucky on that occasion. They were luckier still in the spring of 1797 when the naval mutinies at Spithead, Yarmouth and the Nore had none of the disastrous consequences which might so easily have followed. (This) account gains immeasurably because the engagements are seen in the strategic context of the war. The battles themselves are described with that understanding of the personalities of the commanders, and of the tactics of their fleets, which might be expected from a professor of the Royal Navy College, Greenwich. The British admirals and their captains bear names which will always be memorable in naval history: Jervis, Nelson, Troubridge, Collingwood, Saumarez, Duncan, the notorious Bligh. These men, and the parts which they played become living to the reader through eye-witness accounts, some of them previously unpublished." Very light browning to edges of text block, bump at top corner of boards - tiny bump at bottom corner, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown. Dust jacket is peice clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds

MEN-OF-WAR. LIFE IN NELSON'S NAVY., Patrick O'Brian.
9 Patrick O'Brian. MEN-OF-WAR. LIFE IN NELSON'S NAVY.
New York W.W. Norton 1995 0393038580 / 9780393038583 First American Edition Near Fine Near Fine
95 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "This richly illustrated book offers a concise overview of the historical background to Patrick O'Brian's acclaimed Aubrey/Maturin series, a straightforward exploration of what daily life in Nelson's navy was really like for everyone from the captain to the rawest recruit. What did they eat? What songs did they sing? What was the schedule of the watches? What was the division of prize money to offices and crew? How did these men end up at sea in the first place? These questions and many more are answered in O'Brian's elegant narrative, which includes wonderful anecdotal material on the battles and commanders that established Britain's naval supremacy. Line drawings and charts help us to understand the construction and rigging of the great ships, the types and disposition of the guns, and how they were operated in battle. Contemporary drawings and cartoons illustrate aspects of naval life from the press gang to the scullery. Finally, a generous selection of full-color paintings renders the majesty and the excitement of fleet actions in the age of fighting sail. Any Aubrey/Maturin reader determined to learn the locations of the orlop and the mizenmast, the etiquette of epaulettes, or the range of a 32-pounder will delight in this invaluable reference companion to O'Brian's majestic series."

DEAR M: LETTERS FROM A GENTLEMAN OF EXCESS., Pollock, Jack.
10 Pollock, Jack. DEAR M: LETTERS FROM A GENTLEMAN OF EXCESS.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1989 0771070276 / 9780771070273 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
308 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Until 1983 Jack Pollock (please note - NOT Jackson Pollock the American artist) was the owner of The Pollock Gallery in Toronto, where he exhibited new Canadian artists. Then, abruptly, he lost both his business and his health. Twenty years of a flamboyant lifestyle had led to drug addiction, open-heart surgery, bankruptcy, and to a profound spiritual and psychological malaise. A broken man, he retreated to the south of France, expecting to die. He didn't die. Instead, he began to come to terms with himself and his life, in part by confiding his deepest feelings in a torrent of letters to M, a psychiatrist he had consulted briefly before his departure. These letters constitute an utterly honest assessment of his life, his work, his self-worth. They speak of his daily life in France, of his past accomplishments, about contemporary art in Canada, the act of painting, the contradictions of religion, and the power of sexuality. There are stories here of the art scene in Toronto in the fifties and sixties, when artists and their supporters from the Greenwich Village area fought to save their community from destruction. Stories, too, of the discovery of Norval Morrisseau, of encounters with David Hockney, Josef Albers, and a host of other acclaimed painters, of passionate arguments with the Art Gallery of Ontario, of battles in the sixties over the censorship of art. Pollock's forthright manner and his vivid style make (this) a powerful, captivating autobiography of unusual intimacy." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor soiling, very light rubbing.
