5 Brodribb, John. LNER COUNTRY STATIONS.
London Ian Allan 1988 071101714X / 9780711017146 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
144 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, floor plans, elevations. "It is almost impossible to describe a typical LNER country station - the nearest it is possible to come is to say that somewhere like Otterington was one, although it was certainly not typical. The problem of finding a common strain of styles arises from the diversity of the LNER's consituents, and its adoption of a policy of decentralised management. In addition to this, the relative poverty of the company mitigated against renewal and rebuilding. (This book) is structured along the lines of these constituent companies and, with the aid of over 170 photographs and 20 line drawings, (the author) relates the histories and unifying features of the many varied stations and branches in the LNER's area of operations." Light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, soft crease across bottom edge of rear panel, very small dint on rear hinge.

Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1988 077159917X / 9780771599170 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
200 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Shirley Ryce) tells of her upbringing as the spoiled daughter of a local bookie and card-game organizer, of her early marriage, and of the fateful meeting that turned a bored housewife and mother into a mob mistress. (She) moved in organized crime circles for almost two decades, and had many mob affairs. Although she knew little of the mobsters' 'business', she saw a great deal of the mob at play. Her break with the Papalias (Hamilton, Ontario crime family) and their cohorts, and her co-operation with the police, marked a dramatic change in ther life, and in 'Mob Mistress' she looks back at who and what she was with self-deprecating frankness. At the same time, she and Dubro both give an informed and clear-eyed view of her former 'playmates' - and of the law-enforcement officers who fight them daily." Small bump to bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small corner crease on front flap, very light rubbing.

13 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." Minor wrinkling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, very light browning.

THE KING'S SCHOOL GLOUCESTER., Robertson, David.
17 Robertson, David. THE KING'S SCHOOL GLOUCESTER.
Phillimore, (London, 1974), first edition.
218 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "The King's School continues an educational tradition that has lasted more than 900 years, with only one short break between the dissolution of the medieval Abbey of St. Peters and Henry VIII's establishment of the present school as part of the new Cathedral Church in 1545. A monastic school was well established when Abbot Serlo arrived in 1072, followed by an Almonry School which flourished up to the Dissolution. Through out the 17th and 18th centuries it was one of England's principal grammar schools, to which were sent the sons not only of leading Gloucestershire families but also of families of distinction from all over the country. The 19th century and the early years of this saw the School facing severe financial problems, but their eventual solution by the Ministry of Education and the Church Commissioners has led to revival and rapid expansion in recent years. Former pupils include many men who have achieved positions of national importance, including the joint founders of the Sunday School movement, one of the founders of Methodism, several bishops and an Archbishop of Canterbury, a famous explorer, and the compo ser of the American National Anthem. In these days of widespread questioning of teaching practices, Mr. Robertson's book will be of interest to historians and educationalists as an account of a school which has managed to maintain tradition and high standards over many centuries and to combine them with the most modern teaching." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine, light browning to parts of endpapers, minor rub marks on front board, tiny speck on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket is price clipped, has old price sticker on front flap, tiny tear and wrinkling at top of spine, several heavy creases down fore-edge of flaps, very light rubbing and soiling on rear panel. BRITONS TO ARMS! THE STORY OF THE BRITISH VOLUNTEER SOLDIER AND THE VOLUNTEER TRADITION IN LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND., Steppler, Glenn A.
20 Steppler, Glenn A. BRITONS TO ARMS! THE STORY OF THE BRITISH VOLUNTEER SOLDIER AND THE VOLUNTEER TRADITION IN LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND.
Budding, Stroud, 1997, reprint.
185 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840150149 "At first a spontaneous and temporary response to threats of invasion and internal rebellion, the British Volunteer became a permanent feature of military organization in the mid-Victorian era, eventually evolving into the territorial soldier of the twentieth century. Presented here is a general history of the Volunteer forces together with a detailed account of the experience of two Midland counties - Leicester s h i r e a nd Rutland. Thus both the intensely local dimension of what were initially ad hoc town and village corps, and the national significance of the British volunteer tradition are explored. Spanning three centuries, from the early eighteen th t o th e m id -twentieth century, this book charts the evolution, and the persistence, of a recurring phenomenon. It explains the exact origin and nature of the Napoleonic Volunteer Force and its mounted arm, the Yeomanry; the Victorian Rifle V olu nte er s a nd t he Territorials of the twentieth century, as well as the Home Guard of 1940 and its little-known predecessor, the Volunteer Training Corps of the First World War. Illustrated with twenty-four pages of contemporary black-and-whi te i llus tra tion s a nd set firmly in its social and political context, with careful attention paid to the organization, development and military role of the Volunteer forces, this is the story of a distinctly British institution."
