Unpaginated, 11 1/8" H. "Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, retells the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a takeoff of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated with the Bible's language, 'a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions', that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation assembled primarily from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Version. Now readers of every persuasion - Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers - can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic and even juicy stories." Profusely illustrated in b&w comic strip fashion at an "adult" level, with an Introduction and Commentary by Crumb. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

It was also an age in which Mennonite history was marked by fragmentation even in their own communities. During this twenty-year timespan the battle for separate schooling led to a significant emigration of Canadian Mennonites to Latin America, while another struggle was waged with our immigration authorities to allow the entry of Russian Mennonites into Canada. The book also covers the impact of the Depression on the Mennonites and their efforts to preserve their culture and racial identity. 176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism."
