8 Grey, Ian. PETER THE GREAT: EMPEROR OF ALL RUSSIA.
Philadelphia J.B. Lippincott 1960 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Good-
505 pp, 8 1/2" H. "The first modern Russian was Peter the Great. In this enthralling biography of that remarkable, revolutionary ruler, Ian Grey paints a superbly illuminating portrait - clean, clear, objective, without malice or sentimentality. Here we have, life-size, not only the great Tsar, but the man who fell in love with a peasant girl and made her his empress; the father who was betrayed by his son; the roisterer who was a creative genius; the physical giant who carried all his life the scars of a childhood terror; the soldier, sailor, laborer, daring innovator, architect of a nation. Tossing aside all the pomp and holiness that traditionally surrounded a tsar, Peter ripped apart the fabric of Russian life and, almost singlehandedly, made his country into a modern Western power." Tiny bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's bookplate on free front endpaper, minor shelf soiling on bottom of text block. "As Mr. Grimshaw says, England commonly means London and Stratford-on-Avon to Americans, but it is much more than that. Hence this author, who was born and bred in Yorkshire, tells of the real life of the Eng l i s h p e o p l e, and what it means to boys and girls who are so much like us in speech and habits, and yet so different in many ways. Home life and training, schooldays, sports, and pastimes are each presented so accurately and vividly as to b ro ad en t h e vi ew o f any one, old or young. He tells entertainingly of Guy Fawkes Day, which is to English boys what Fourth of July is to ours, and explains the many traditional features connected with Christmas, with many amusing anecdotes. Mu ch val uab le i nfo rma tio n is given about industries, and, with pleasing variety, the game of cricket is fully covered. The beautiful Lake region of famous poets is told of with a charm of style that fits the subject. Excellent illustratio ns f rom pho togr aph s e nric h a book t hat will help to make the world better by increasing intelligent human interest in others." A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION., Reid, Dennis.
20 Reid, Dennis. A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1988 0195406648 / 9780195406641 Second (expanded) Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
418 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This Second Edition covers painting to 1980. A long final chapter treats a crucial fifteen years when there developed in Canada a tremendous interest in other art forms and an apparent falling off of interest in painting. In fact the cry was hear - throughout the western world - that painting was dead. It turned out, however, that this was far from true. Dennis Reid discusses the work of established artists who produced steadily in the period - including Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Gershon Iskowitz, John Meredith, Guido Molinari, Jack Shadbolt, and Claude Tousignant - as well as new arrivals on the scene who have since joined the ranks of leading Canadian artists. Among the more recent painters discussed are David Bolduc, John Boyle, David Craven, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Yves Gaucher, John Hall, Ron Martin, Michael Morris, Norval Morrisseau, Christopher Pratt, Shirley Wiitasalo, and Tim Zuck. Enriched by this overview, and by many additions to the original text, (this) is the widest-ranging and most authoritiative handbook available. Lucid, interesting, and informative, it is still a pleasure to read from first to last." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump on bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
