1 (Bonaparte, Napoleon). Commentaries by Jean-Pierre Babelon and Suzanne D'Huart. Translated from the French and introduced by Alex de Jonge. NAPOLEON'S LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. A FACSIMILE EDITION OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT, TOGETHER WITH ITS CODICILS, APPENDED INVENTORIES, LETTERS AND INSTRUCTIONS, PRESERVED IN THE FRENCH NATIONAL ARCHIVES.
New York Paddington 1977 0448221861 / 9780448221861 Soft Cover Very Good -
106 pp, + 6 pages of b&w illustrations, 11" H. " 'France, armee, tete d'armee, Josephine - .' These were the strangely moving, strangely revealing last words spoken by Napoleon Bonaparte as he lay dying on the isle of St. Helena in 1821. Ever since, they have contributed to the popular heroic image of the man who commanded the loyalty of millions, conquered almost the whole of Europe and lost the woman he loved. But his will, reprinted here in facsimile and translated into English for the first time, throws fascinating new light on one of the most enigmatic and extraordinary figures in history. From the detailed lists of his shirts and snuff boxes to the distribution of millions of francs, from his bitter denunciation of the 'English oligarchy and their hired assassin' to his fervent attempts to keep the Napoleonic legend alive through his son, 'The Last Will and Testament' illustrates the contradictions of the Corsican turned Frenchman, the 'petit caporal' turned 'Empereur', the man turned superman and, finally, the man." Interior - light cigarette odour, slight browning in margins of pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block, browning to edges of covers.

A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
3 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. THE CELTIC LEGEND OF THE BEYOND., Braz, Anatole Le. Translated by Derek Bryce.
5 Braz, Anatole Le. Translated by Derek Bryce. THE CELTIC LEGEND OF THE BEYOND.
Llanerch, Felinfach, 1991, reprint.
108 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0947992065 "This unusual and fascinating book includes stories of premonitions, omens, magic books, strange rites, wakes, ghosts and exorcisms. Many of the stories are based on events which took place, in cluding personal experiences. Other stories are second hand or further removed, and the storytellers have given them an archaic and legendary quality. Many of the beliefs and customs described in this book once existed in identical or an a l o g o u s f o rm in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and the Isle of Man, but the Celtic cult of the dead survived into modern times in its most complete form in Armorican Brittany. Anatole Le Braz assembled a vast collection of this materia l on t he s ub je c t in to a logical and coherent whole entitled 'La Legende de la Mort....' In making an abridged translation, Dr Bryce has avoided much of the repetition that occurred inthe original work." (It) provides a highly readable narrative of a complex period that fundamentally shaped the European state system. 206 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "New Brunswick's enormous timber trade attracted the first wave of Scots in the late 18th century. As economic conditions in Scotland worsened, the flow of emigrants increased, creating distinctive Scottish communities along the province's major timber bays and river frontages. While Scots relied on the timber trade for economic sustenance, their religion offered another form of support, sustaining them in a spiritual and cultural sense. These two themes, the axe and the bible, underpin their story. Using wide-ranging documentary sources, includ-ing passenger lists and newspaper shipping reports, (this book) traces the progress of Scottish colon- ization and its ramifications for the province's early development. Who were these Scots? What factors caused them to select their various locations? What problems did they face? Were they successful pioneers? Why was the Scottish Church so important to them? In tracing the process of emigration, (the author) offers new insights on where Scots settled, their overall impact and the cultural legacy they left behind. (It) is the first fully documented account of Scottish emigration to New Brunswick." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

Downey describes this vital bastion as 'The strongest fortress in America, a walled city without a peer in the New World'. Louisbourg was guardian of the approaches to the S t . L awrence River, gateway to the heart of French Canada, and the key to a continent. In North America, the grasp of France was beginning to loosen. Its territories were shrinking, due to England's relentless drive. But total possession was im po ss i bl e so long as the great fortress Louisbourg stood fast. Then in 1744, war was declared between France and England and General William Pepperrell and American Colonial troops with the English navy laid siege to Louisbourg which fell in 174 5. En gl and 's possession lasted only three years, as Louisbourg was restored to the French by the Treaty of Aix la-Chapelle. The Seven Years War brough still another siege (1758) by the British who defeated the French. When the struggle be t ween th e tw o g reat powers ended, the fort was demolished and its people dispersed."
