YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY., Allen, Gillian.
1 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
4 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." Small Christmas gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, light browning on inside hinges, light toning in margins of pages, slight fading to colour on spine and at board edges, very small worn area at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 7 Cowper, Francis. Foreword by Hon. Sir William McNair. A PROSPECT OF GRAY'S INN.
Stevens & Sons, London, 1951, first edition.
187 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. Presents "a view over the long and varied history of Gray's Inn from the Middle Ages till to-day. For the lover of London and the social historian, no less than for the lawyers, the f ascination of the Inns of Court is irresistible. But this is more than a story of an Inn of Court and its members, or even of its six centuries of change in the shape of our legal system and the ways of the lawyers at study, at work and at p l a y . H ere Gray's Inn, starting as a manor house in the fields outside London, grows and changes as the city reaches out to enclose it. It feels the impact of religious change and civil war. Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian L on do n gr ow up around it. The bombs of two wars devastate it. Yet through every transformation its continuity is unbroken. And the Author demonstrates the essential part which that continuity plays in safeguarding the conception of freedom un der th e rul e o f wa r." Scattered tiny light foxing marks throughout pages, foxing on endpapers and edges of textblock, dust soiling on top of textblock, small closed tear (archivally taped) at top of pages 113 to 130, light edge rubbing, f ain t di scol or atio n on c l oth on boards. Gerard Kenney takes us along the route that led him to build a lone log cabin on the small and inaccessible Lake of the Old Uncles. No roads reach the pond, only a footpath. The hours spent in the quietude of the forest cabin have resulted in the author's personal philosophy, which was inspired by his hero, Henry David Thoreau. 20 Mika, Nick and Mika, Helma. With Gary Thomson. BLACK CREEK PIONEER VILLAGE.
Belleville, Ontario Mika Publishing 1988 0921341229 / 9780921341222 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
96 pp, 8 3/8" H. Colour and b&w photographs, drawings, map. "In the northwest corner of the bustling city of Toronto stands Black Creek Pioneer Village, a replica of a typical 19th century crossroads settlement in southern Ontario. The village (is) laid out on a 56-acre site. Within the confines of the village the sounds and sights of another age are in sharp contrast to the towering buildings and the noise of 20th century traffic on nearby Jane Street and Steeles Avenue. At Black Creek the pace is slower, reminiscent of a time when life was harder and simpler but rewarding. The village consists of 41 historic buildings, each offering a fascinating glimpse into the past. Inside the houses and artisans' shops the visitor sees how Upper Canada's early settlers lived and worked. Here the housewife cooks the family's meal in the open hearth of the fireplace; the cabinet-maker works on his foot-powered lathe; the blacksmith hammers a horseshoe on his anvil; women are spinning, dyeing yarn and weaving cloth. There is the old stone gristmill with its 18.5-foot waterwheel which drives the machinery to grind the whole wheat flour for the local inn. At the Half Way House patrons are offered a hearty fare, and at the Laskay Emporium the shopkeeper takes time to chat with the customers." Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top edge, minor wear at top of flap-folds.
