Chatto & Windus, London, 1959, first edition.
320 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. VOLUME II ONLY. "David Livingstone's letters are the most important source of information about his activities, beliefs and opinions. The present collection, drawn chiefly from family archives, c overs not only the whole of his career as a missionary in Bechuanaland, but also his first great crossing of the continent from Loanda to Quilimane. Extracts from a few have appeared in various biographies, but the great majority have never b e e n p u blished before. Vivid and sometimes extremely outspoken, they contain much detail about his relations with fellow missionaries, Boers and Native chiefs, and about his own journeys into the interior; they afford new insights into his re li gi ou s o ut lo ok, conceptions of missionary enterprise, scientific and linguistic interests, and medical knowledge." London Charles Knight 1974 0853142319 / 9780853142317 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
223 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "British army wives 'on the strength' have campaigned alongside their men since the earliest days of the standing army. They have had to maintain their marriages and some semblance of home life on camps and stations in every quarter of the world, during peace and war. (The author) brings alive for us stories of heroines whose love and loyalty helped resign them to taking second place to the Army in their husband's lives, and enabled them to keep house and bring up children in alien and often dangerous surroundings. She discusses snobberies and superstitions, traditions and taboos, and with wit and humour treats the 'colonels' ladies and Judy O'Gradys' alike. History, anecdote and personal reminiscences are combined in this book, which includes vivid extracts from letters, diaries and memoirs, some of which have not previously been published. Many of the book's illustrations are provided from a unique collection of photographs taken by a pioneer of photography, Henry Wood - Veronica Bamfield's grandfather - in the course of his military career." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, light browning to top inside edge, light to moderate fading to spine color - lettering still very legible, very small area of surface paper loss and a small ghost sticker mark at bottom of front flap.

LOVE AND THE SPANISH., Epton, Nina.
6 Epton, Nina. LOVE AND THE SPANISH.
London Cassell 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- B.S. Biro, dust jacket illustration.
216 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Spain is a country of Magdalenes and repentant Don Juans as well as of gay sinners. This sums up concisely and colourfully - as far as love can ever be summed up - what must be considered as the Spanish attitude to love both in the past and indeed at the present time, for it has changed remarkably little over the centuries, and only now has enlightened thought to some extent begun to free love from strangling conventions and taboos. This country has produced Don Juan the greatest lover of all time, one of the most passionate and violent of all love stories in 'Carmen', the Inquisition with its scenes of extreme punishment and tortured flesh, the charming court-ship rites like the Fiesta de San Antonio, and the tragic genius of Lorca, preoccupied with beauty and death. How is it possible to reconcile the passionate guitar-playing majo with the cold, unyielding figure of the Inquisitor? Miss Epton gives us the answer - no easy achievement, for the Spaniards have never been inclined to communicate personal feelings about love either in their art or in their literature, and this reticence and pride still persists. She has met every type of Spaniard, from intellectuals to prostitutes, from students to doctors, and she has questioned them tactfully but ruthlessly. As a result, she has laid bare the myth of Romantic Spain, revealing the fundamental difference between Galicia, more tolerant of human weakness, and the severer South, which is one of the most striking character-istics of love in Spain." Light fading to top/bottom edges of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling, light browning on spine and very light on flap-folds, very light soiling on rear panel.

On his journey he meets up with Chang, a thief and a brigand, but Chang saves Chi-li from death and, becoming fond of him, thinks he will be able to make Chi-li do what he wants. But Chang is not aware Chi-li is a Christian, and is not only surprised but angry when he refuses to take part in wrongdoing. 10 Mika, Nick and Mika, Helma. With Larry Turner. HISTORIC MILLS OF ONTARIO.
Belleville, Ontario Mika Publishing 1987 0921341083 / 9780921341086 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, reproductions. "(C)oncentrates on Ontario's saw, grist, flour and woollen mills, beginning with some of the early mills built by government before the 1800s to supply the needs of Loyalist settlers who came to Upper Canada. Although these mills have long since disappeared, they have been depicted by contemporary artists and their portrayals have been reproduced. Enterprising pioneers and later immigrants and their descendants in the 19th century harnessed the magnificent water power of Ontario's rivers and creeks, and the mills they erected on their banks in various counties are featured (here) in text and pictures. Historian Larry Turner gives a general overview of milling in Ontario and the significance of the role the miller played in the life and growth of 19th century communities. He explains basic milling methods, the mill machinery and technological advances, changing economic conditions that influenced the operation of mills, and he discusses restoration of the remaining heritage structures as a practical approach to their preservation. (W)ritten for anyone interested in Ontario's past, for history buffs and genealogists, for it tells about the people who built and operated the mills and about their successes and failures." Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, light edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one small edge tear archivally taped, minor rubbing.

11 Moir, John S., editor. Introduction by John Webster Grant. THE CROSS IN CANADA: VIGNETTES OF THE CHURCHES ACROSS FOUR CENTURIES.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
247 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This anthology of vignettes illustrating the part played by all branches of the Christian church in Canadian development offers glimpses into church life - from Jacques Cartier's planting the cross in the Gaspe to the remarkable Christian pavilion at Expo '67. Here are such different personalities as Jeanne Mance, founder of Canada's first hospital; Brother Andre, the modern miracle worker of Montreal and Norman MacLeod, the hero-tyrant of his own congregation in Cape Breton. Here, too, are brief pictures of the churches' many-sided service to Canada - a Presbyterian long communion, a Methodist camp meeting, the horrible deaths of Jesuit missionaries and the gallantry of a padre on the beach at Dieppe. We meet men and women whose names are known to every Canadian, and others whose lives of service were passed in obscurity. Drama, sorrow, humour and inspiration are found in this tribute to the cross in Canada." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light browning at top/bottom edges - also on spine and flap-folds; one small edge tear (taped); some tape on top/bottom inside edges, minor edge wear.

228 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(R)ecounts the global voyage, and the efforts to uncover the fate, of a hero of 18th century Pacific exploration long familiar with Australians and Europeans, but little known in North America. Count Jean Francois de Galaup, de La Perouse, (now called Laperouse) had a distinguished naval career, serving in the West Indies, Mauritius, the Indian Ocean and North America. He defeated the British off Louisbourg and captured forts York and Prince of Wales on Hudson Bay. His scientific expedition in 1785 rivaled, in popular interest, the space voyages of today. The expedition rounded Cape Horn, sailed north to Chile, Easter Island, and Hawaii, and then explored and charted the coast of today's Alaska and British Columbia. They made their way south to San Francisco before sailing across the Pacific to Macao, the Philippines, Korea and Japan. They charted the Tartary Coast and the Kamchatka Peninsula, the farthest outpost of the Russian Empire. Turning south again, they made for Botany Bay via Samoa. On March 10, 1788, the Boussole and Astrolabe headed north and disappeared. Despite several search parties, it was not until 1827 that evidence of one of the wrecks was discovered by an Irish sea captain named Peter Dillon. It was only in 1962 that Reece Discombe, an expert in underwater salvage, found the flagship. Archaeological teams from Australia, France and Vanuatu continue to probe the wrecks to this day."
