Being a researcher at heart, he went further and spent countless hours of his spare time gathering the history behind Oakville's streets. Joyce Burnell has picked a selection of Ashe's street histories and has added several Oakville landmarks - some of which are not longer here. Add to this, interesting archival images - some never before seen - combined with newer colour photographs and you have an intriguing reflection of Oakville's unique history. With close to 100 street name histories and over 40 landmarks featured, these interesting vignettes make for an easy, enjoyable read. 10 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Both lauded the influence of the virtuous Christian woman, used the same female r ole models from the Bible, and saw the home as the locus of the construction of female piety. Yet each group castigated the other for having antifemale values. Protestants developed the slovenly, drunken 'Biddy' as a stereotype of Catholic women and Catholics portrayed Protestant devotional and family life as cold and arid. Boston Bulfinch Press / Little, Brown 1992 0821217771 / 9780821217771 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Cornell Capa.
216 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w. "Cornell Capa, world famous for his photo-journalism as well as for his founding of New York's International Center of Photography, has had a long an d productive working life. His career has spanned several key decades of the twentieth century, and his work has taken him around the globe to cover political events and chronic social problems, to photograph the famous and the unsung. As a self-described concerned photographer, Cornell Capa has always been led by his instincts to photograph people - all kinds of people - with a humanitarian commitment. This book reflects that commitment in unforgettable pictures of missionaries in Central and South America; religious and tribal rituals; the presidental campaigns of Adlai Steven-son and John F. Kennedy; political upheavals, refugees, and wars; the historic and the marginal. Here, too, are moments of whimsy and joy, from Harlem to London to Peru, and memorable images of celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Alec Guiness, Grandma Moses, Billy Graham, and Boris Pasternak. Despite the wide recognition of Cornell Capa's achievements, and the fact that he has spent his lifetime furthering the art of photography, this book is the first retrospective collection of his work to be published in the United States. All these photographs transmit crucial aspects of the political, social, cultural, and religious history of our times." Very minor cocking to book. 19 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. "Cigarette cards, introduced in the 1870s and immensely popular until the Second World War, provide a richly illustrated history of the period. With real artistic merit they showed heroes of sport and war; stars of stage, screen and radio; classic cars; and many other images. During their golden age, card, albums and novelties were collected avidly, and these fascinating brand advertisements are still items of great interest to many thousands of collectors throughout the world. Many of us will remember the joy of searching in packets for the card to complete the set. This book brings back all the splendours of that time." Interior - clean and tight. Exterior - book slightly cocked and twisted, heavy bump to spine/front hinge causing tear which migrates through the majority of pages in gutter area, several small scuffs on front cover in general area of spine tear, soft creases at rear cover corners.
