3 volume set, 7 1/4" H - medium brown leather with two black leather title labels/gilt lettering on each spine. Gilt banding on spines, gilt decoration to edges of boards, gilt border to front and rear boards. All textblock edges have a dark red speckled finish. Vol. I is the third edition, printed 1837, 336 pp. Vol. II is the second edition, printed 1838, 323 pp + (1) pp advertising for other works by author. Vol. III is the first edition, printed in 1839, 348 pp. Vol. I has a 1895 gift inscription on the front free endpaper and a 1846 gift inscription on a preliminary page. Vol. II has a very small bump/crease at bottom corner of page 77 to 100. All volumres have a few scattered tiny faint foxing marks throughout pages and on edges of text blocks, a small slight bump at board corners, very light wear on bottom edges of boards, some light wear to leather, some scattered tiny foxing marks on boards.

Brought up in the Bonaparte tradition and used as a political instrument by his parents, who exploited his popularity with the French people as a means to consolidate their regime, he was forced to flee France when the Prussians inflicted the crushing defeat of 1870. He came to England and later became an officer in the British Army and was killed i n the Zulu War.
