SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700., Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna.
1 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

4 Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman. TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA)
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." 8 Wolfe, Donald H. THE ASSASSINATION OF MARILYN MONROE.
Little, Brown, London, 1998, first British edition.
532 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0316640190 B&w photographs. "The brevity and discrepancies of the initial investigation, the unexplained silence of several key witnesses and the rumours sparked by her relationships with the Kennedy brothers have consistently raised suspicions that the events of Saturday August 4th 1962 did not end as they were officially documented - in the suicide of the world's most famous woman. Now, in this major new investigation, Donald H. Wolfe has succeeded where so many other writers have failed. With the testimony of the two witnesses, John Miner and Norman Jefferies, who always seemed to possess potentially explosive information but had never previously come forward, Wol f e assembles conclusive evidence proving that Marily Monroe was murdered. He not only names her killer and specifies the cause of death, but identifies the men who, acting upon the 'National Security Matter' surrounding Marilyn, orchestrated the su bs e quent cover-up - From the opening description of the lifeless body to the moment-by-moment account of her final days and hours, (this book) explodes every myth concerning her remarkable life and tragic death. It is a truly gripping portrait of on e of the most shocking crimes of the century." Book lightly cocked, one tiny corner bump.
