DOCTOR IN LOVE., Gordon, Richard.
4 Gordon, Richard. DOCTOR IN LOVE.
Michael Joseph, London, 1957, first edition.
188 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. In this latest installment in the 'Doctor' series, "Gordon soon discovers that a busy practitioner needs a wife as much as a stethoscope. As his other friend, Tony Benskin, observes, 'The patients don 't like you messing about with their wives unless they know you've got one of your own at home'. And of course there has to be someone to answer the telephone, open the door, keep the N.H.S. records, cook the dinner, do the laundry - and pro t e c t h i m from some of his female patients. Dr Gordon's only worry is that the right girl will turn up. She does, but only after an unfortunate love affair which should illustrate to patients the dangers of failling for the same nurse as thei r do ct or . He proposes, is accepted, and soon comes to the conclusion that a couple who can survive the preparations for their wedding can overcome pretty well everything in their married life to come. Despite relatives and real estate, solicit or s a nd sal es m en, bridesmaids and builders, and the doubtful though undoubted assistance of his friends, Dr Gordon finally marries the girl - but only just." Penguin, London, 2006, reprint.
373 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 014045523X "The stories collected in this volume reflect the rich tradition of medieval Jain storytelling between the seventh and fifteenth centuries, from simple folk tales and lives of famous monks to sophisticated narratives of rebirth. They describe the ways in which a path to peace and bliss can be found, either by renouncing the world or by following Jain ethics of non-violence, honesty, moderation and fidelity. Here are stories depictin g the painful consequences when a loved one chooses life as a monk, the triumph of Jain women who win over their husbands to their religion, or the rewards of a simple act of piety. The volume ends with an account of vice and virtue, which d e p i c t s the thieving and destructive passions lurking in the forest of life, ready to rob the unsuspecting traveller of reason and virtue. Phyllis Granoff's translation preserves the flavour of the original tales. In her introduction, she di sc us se s Ja in d o ctrine and belief, the Jains' preservation of medieval Indian stories, and the themes and sources of individual tales." THE COUNTESS., Johns, Rebecca.
7 Johns, Rebecca. THE COUNTESS.
New York Crown 2010 0307588459 / 9780307588456 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
285 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "In this riveting dramatization of Erzebet Bathory's life, the countess tells her story in her own words, written to her only son - a final reckoning from his mother in an attempt to reveal the truth behind her downfall. Countess Bathory describes her upbringing in one of the most powerful noble houses in Hungary, recounting in loving detail her devotion to her parents and siblings as well as the heartbreak of losing her father at a young age. She soon discovers the price of being a woman in sixteenth-century Hungary as her mother arranges her marriage to Ferenc Nadasdy, a union made with the cold calculation of a financial transaction. Young Erzebet knows she has no choice but to accept this marriage even as she laments its loveless nature and ultimately turns to the illicit affections of another man. Seemingly resigned to a marriage of convenience and a life of surreptitious pleasure, the countess surprises even herself as she ignites a marital spark with Ferenc through the most unromantic of acts: the violent punishment of an insolent female servant. The event shows Ferenc that his wife is no trophy but a strong, determined woman more than capable of managing their vast estates during Ferenc's extensive military campaigns against the Turks. Her naked assertion of power accomplishes what her famed beauty could not: capturing the love of her husband. The countess embraces this new role of loving wife and mother, doing everything she can to expand her husband's power and secure her family's future. But a darker side surfaces as Countess Bathory's demand for virtue, obedience, and, above all, respect from her servants take a sinister turn. What emerges is not only a disturbing, unflinching portrait of the deeds that gave Bathory the moniker 'Blood Countess', but an intimate look at the woman who became a monster." Remainder dot on bottom of textblock near spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny bump on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

Yeats included almost every sort of Irish folk tale in this marvelous compendium of fairy tales and song which he collected and edited for publication in 1892. Here are tales of the chilling wail of the Banshee, whose cry portends death, and of the fish-tailed Merrow, whose beautiful women spurn their green-haired husbands for handsome local fishermen. There are bewitched puddings, lost wishes, fairies, changelings, Leprechauns, ghosts, giants, devils and kings that touch our souls and fire our imagination. Not coincidentally, it is in the weath of symbol within Irish folklore that Yeats found the key to his personal and individual mythology - the muse of his poetic genius." The stories are gathered under the headings: The Fate of the Children of Lir; The Trooping Fairies (The Fairies / Changelings / The Merrow); The Solitary Fairies; Ghosts; Witches, Fairy Doctors; Tyeer-Na-N-Oge; Saints, Priests; The Devil; Giants; Kings Queens, Princesses, Earls, Robbers.
