RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC., Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce.
1 Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce. RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC.
Charlottesville, Virginia Rockbridge 1999 1883522153 / 9781883522155 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
378 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union 's Army of the Potomac is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennyslvania Volunteer Infantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed. The tale also includes a vivid, firsthand description of the brutal history of the 129th and the Tyler Brigade and poignant stories of its men - Frederick B. Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstrong's point of view. A masterpiece of historic sleuthing and disciplined research, this volume may change the way some historians view General Humphreys." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor rubbing on rear panel.

"The name of Neville Duke is well-known in aviation circles, not only as a successful wartime fighter pilot, but also as a peacetime test pilot with the Hawker Aviation Company. Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war, he found himself as a young fighter pilot with the crack 93 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, in 1941. Towards the end of the war he became an RAF test pilot and later a member of the RAF's High Speed Flight. This was the start of a successful career as a test pilot after leaving the Service in 1948, having been awarded the AFC. Working for Hawkers, he became Chief Test Pilot and did all the major flight development on one of the most famous of all RAF peacetime aircraft - the Hawker Hunter, and with it took the world speed record in 1953. Injured in a Hunter crash two years later, he was forced to leave Hawkers but continued to fly and later set up his own test flying business, as well as becoming the personal pilot of Sir George Dowty. He is now a freelance and still a highly respected test pilot, working on the Optica, Fieldmaster and Firemaster aeroplanes." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 9 Kent Aviation Historical Research Society. (Roy S. Humphreys, Philip MacDougall, Len Pilkington, Robin J. Brooks, David G. Collyer, Ray Munday.) KENT AIRFIELDS IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Gillingham Meresborough 1981 0905270363 / 9780905270364 Hard Cover Very Good - No Jacket - (as issued)
192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs (some German reconnaissance), drawings, profiles. "Biggin Hill, Manston, Hawkinge and West Malling are just a few of those historic Battle of Britain airfields covered in this book. Written by members of the Kent Aviation Historical Research Society, it contains much new material which will be of interest both to aviation enthusiasts and those living in Kent. As the title suggests, it is not an attempt at re-telling the Battle of Britain story for, unlike many previous publications, it concentrates entirely upon the airfields. An introductory chapter though, deals with the effects of the Battle upon the County of Kent whilst subsequent sections deal with each airfield in turn. Apart from those already mentioned, the book has sections on Gravesend, Rochester, Detling, (Eastchurch), and Lympne whilst a further chapter deals with airfield defences. Using personal accounts, official records and many rarely seen photographs, the book aims to be a useful contribution to the history of Kent." Light bump to bottom of spine, spine heavily sun-faded - mainly on top half and lettering is still legible, minor rubbing - tiny scuff on front board.
Price: 17.50 USD
