1968 COOKING CLUB CALENDAR - ADVERTISING PIECE FOR MOOTE & HODGSON LIMITED, ORANGEVILLE, ONTARIO., Baker, Betty / Moote & Hodgson, Orangeville, Ontario.
1 Baker, Betty / Moote & Hodgson, Orangeville, Ontario. 1968 COOKING CLUB CALENDAR - ADVERTISING PIECE FOR MOOTE & HODGSON LIMITED, ORANGEVILLE, ONTARIO.
1967 Very Good+
Approx. 11 3/8" H x 8" W. This calendar was an advertising piece for Moote & Hodgson Limited of Orangeville, Ontario. The binding quite cleverly consists of a piece of flexible 'gold' coloured metal, with a hole for hanging at top, which loops through all the pages of the calendar. When the 'gold' pencil that slots into the loop is removed, the pages can be taken out and re-ordered (the instructions suggest that each finished month be placed at the back of the calendar in sequence). The twelve sheets for the months each form a pocket at the bottom (for storing receipts, recipes, notes, etc.) and have a recipe illustrated with a sepiatone photograph and a menu on the front. On the reverse are additional recipes following that month's theme and a tip from Betty Baker. The calendar cover consists of a folded sheet (just over 6 1/2" H at the front) with a pasted on colour picture of a fisherman and the company details on the front. The full-sized rear section has a form for filling in the "Household Budget" on the inside (unused) and information on "Home Freezing - Fruits and Vegetables" on the reverse. The monthly recipe themes are: January - Sandwiches Supreme; February - Soup So Warm; March - Fish 'n' Things; April - Meat Miracles; May - Good ol' Cookie; June - Delectable Vegetables; July - Dessert Magic; August - Beverage Coolers; September - Countdown on Coffee Cakes; October - Thanksgiving Delights; November - Fashionable Meat Dishes; December - Salads Superb. The rear section has small creases at bottom corners, light browning at bottom rear edge, and very tiny crease at top corners.

6 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

OCCUPATIONAL COSTUME IN ENGLAND FROM THE ELEVENTH CENTURY TO 1914., Cunnington, Phillis and Lucas, Catherine. With Alan Mansfield.
11 Cunnington, Phillis and Lucas, Catherine. With Alan Mansfield. OCCUPATIONAL COSTUME IN ENGLAND FROM THE ELEVENTH CENTURY TO 1914.
London Adam & Charles Black 1967 First Edition Good+ Good
427 pp, 9 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w with drawings, reproductions and photographs. "(This book) fills a wide gap in the history of costume, since former books on the subject have concentrated on the fashions of the more leisured classes (a minority) rather than on the clothes worn by people at work. The occupations covered include those of outdoor manual worker, tradesmen, craftsmen, miners, seamen, public and domestic servants. In describing working clothes, the authors show that they gradually evolved from a comparative uniformity in medieval times to a later rich variety related to particular occupations. Chapter headings: Introduction; Worker on the Land; Seamen and Fisherfolk; Miners, Coal Carriers, Navvies; Tradesmen and Craftsmen Part 1 (Carpenters / Paper Caps / Builders / Smiths / Textile Workers / Tailors); Tradesmen and Craftsmen Part 2 (Butchers / Millers, Bakers and Cooks / Liquor Trade / Street Vendors); Household Servants - Men; Household Servants - Women; Transport (Railways / Cabbies and Cads, Bus and Tram Crews); Postal Service and Stage Coaches; Police; Firemen; Miscellaneous Servants of the Public (Dustmen / Chimney-sweeps / Linkboys / Lamplighters / District Messengers / Barbers); Medical Profession (Barber-surgeons / Physicians / Surgeons and Hygiene / Quacks / Apothecaries / Nurses); Evolution of Protective Clothing; Some Special Relations of Clothing to Work (Clothing in Relation to Carrying / Sartorial Symbols / Costume for Advertisement / The Rationale of Irrational Clothes); Bibliography and List of Museums; Souces of Figures; Index. CHATEAUX OF THE LOIRE., Dunlop, Ian. Preface by the Duc de Brissac.
13 Dunlop, Ian. Preface by the Duc de Brissac. CHATEAUX OF THE LOIRE.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1969, first edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, color frontispiece, b&w plates, plans. "Travellers of every age have extolled the beauties of the chateaux of the Loire....By making use of their descriptions Mr. Dunlop shows us the chateaux as they were in their prime. He resurrects the vanished glories of Le Verger, Bury, Richelieu and Chanteloup, and assigns them their proper place in the mosaic. What was it that caused the King and his Courtiers to build s o l a v i s h ly in this region? By way of an answer, the reader is taken kite-hawking and stag hunting. What purpose did the immense size of the chateaux serve? The author takes us below stairs for a look at the great hierarchy of servants w h o ma i nt ai ne d a no ble household. These castles and palaces were the background to crucial historical events. Mr. Dunlop allows eye-witnesses to speak for themselves. We watch the Conspiracy of Amboise through the eyes of the English Ambass ad or ; w e ove rhe ar th e mur der of the duc de Guise with those who were in the next room. Thre Revolution is chronicled through the windows of Cheverny. Starting with Chinon in the days of Joan of Arc and ending with the restorations of the ni net een th c en tury , th is boo k give s the most comprehensive, and certainly the most original, picture of the Chateaux of the Loire. It is not an omnibus guide book - though it would be a very useful companion on a tour of the Loire Valley. It is not a tre ati se on styl e - but t he ar chitectural student may learn a lot from it. What it is is a book for the reader who wishes to take an intelligent interest in the buildings of one of the most beautiful and historic areas of France." Windrow & Greene, (London, 1996).
64 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Unlike the household troops of many heads of state, The Guards have combined their role as the personal bodyguard of the Sovereign with an unsurpassed fighting tradition. This tradition is the cement that binds them together within The Household Division, whose motto is Septem Juncta in Uno - Seven Joined in One. Although The Household Division is an adminstrative rather than a fighting formation and although The Guards are most visible today for their central part in London's spectacular occasions of military and State pageantry, the Regiments are first and foremost professional soldiers, ready to exchange their ceremonial uniforms for comb at fatigues at short notice - as they proved most recently in the Falklands and Gulf Wars. Both aspects of their unique character are fully covered in the more than 120 superb colour photos specially taken for this book by a respected military photographer and author." They traveled, it was said, with three outlanders who claimed to be from a place called Earth: a beautiful woman named Jennifer, who had become apprentice to Lialla in the use of the magic of the Night-Threads; the young man known as Chris, who was teaching the weakling Aletto odd but effective ways of fighting. Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2000 0850527511 / 9780850527513 First Edition Very Good Very Good+
291 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w illustrations. "(E)xamines the often stormy relationships (of the generals and politicians of the Great War), portraying the decision-making process on both sides. Many of the individuals involved remain household names today over eighty years on: Douglas Haig, Ferdinand Foch, David Lloyd George, Woodrow Wilson and the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. The results of their endeavours led to the now legendary carnage in Gallipoli, on the Somme, in the mud of Flanders and the frozen heights of the Alps. How did these great men conduct their relationships and decision-making? To answer this, the chapters range widely to look at the Home Front, the Western Front and America at war. They also deal with the role of royalty and sideshows such as Italy, where Britian and France came to the aid of faltering allies. In all of this, defeat or victory would be decided by the most forceful and dynamic leaders willing to listen to and accept the wisest counsel. (This book) brings together the works of distinguished authorities on this ever-fascinating period and adds significantly to our understanding of the often complex relationships at play." Minor browning to edges of textblock, two tiny edge tears with crease at top of page 139/140 - archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.
