1 Adams, Jack. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS (THE 24tH REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Hamish Hamilton, London, (1968), first edition.
157 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, march. "A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuman deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all the large and small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist Battalion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ever. This book is a fitting tribute to them and to one of the greatest Regiments of all time." THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
3 Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1973, first edition.
115 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521386 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. Music for Regimental Slow March, Trot Past, Gallop Past. "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as e d i t o r o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to exc e l. Th ey a re in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence . He has pa id wor t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history." Very light cigarette odor, very light browning to pages and edges of text block, faint water marks at top/bottom edge of b oa rds - mai nly on rear b oar d. Music for Regimental Quick March (The Garb of Old Gaul), Bugle Charge, and Regimental Quick March for Pipes & Drums (Highland Laddie). "At Waterlo o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides." 5 Booth, Philip. Introduction by Lt. General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE OXFORDSHIRE AND BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 43rd/52nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1971, first edition.
158 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520290 B&w photographs, reproductions, music to Regimental March. Errata sheet tipped in on half-title page. "Since their formation in the mid-eighteenth century the 43rd and 52nd Regim ents of Foot have had a variety of changes in title, achieving in 1908 the name by which they will always be remembered, that of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, although the old cherished numbers, by which the regiments w e r e k n o w n before the Cardwell Reforms, have always b een unofficially used by the regular battalions. In 1803 they were the first regiments to become light infantry in Sir John Moore's Light Brigade, and achieved further fame in the Penins ul ar W ar as p ar t of Craufurd's Light Division. Perhaps the 52 nd's most famous success was at Waterloo, when, under Sir John Colborne's skilful handling, they made the famous charge which carried the day for the allies. With customary skill an d c our age suc cee din g generations in the Regiment lived up to their illustrious predecessors, particularly in the First and Second World Wars; their stand on the Somme in 1918 against the full weight of the German army, and their part in th e gl ider -bor ne l a ndin gs a t D- Da y are only two examples of the fighting skill which has made this regiment famous. Together with the 60th Rifles and the Rifle Brigade they are now part of the Royal Green Jackets - indeed a happy issue out o f the affl ictio n of po st wa r org anisa tio n." THE 10th ROYAL HUSSARS (PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Brander, Michael. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
6 Brander, Michael. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE 10th ROYAL HUSSARS (PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, first edition.
137 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Brigadier Humphrey Gore, who raised the 10th Dragoons in 1715, and General Sir David Dawney, Colonel in 1969, each had a son in the regiment, as also did many of t he Colonels between them, including King Edward VII, for such close family relationships at all levels were a feature in the Tenth, with the same names appearing generation after generation. Hence in a very intimate way the regiment has al w a y s b e e n 'Proud of Their Man'. The Tenth has also always been notable for the Cavalry Spirit, that elusive quality, which has nothing to do with horses, implying light-hearted dash and daring, pride in discipline combined with independence o f mi nd an d ju dg ement, the ability to assess odds quickly and take instant and correct decisions, enduring courage and leadership. It was noticeable before Warburg in 1760 in Major Davenport's letters. It was there before they became the Pr inc e of Wal e s's O wn Hus sars and the smartest regiment in the British Army. It was there at Waterloo, when they led the decisive charge of the day, and right down through the years and the campaigns it has always been evident. Whether in intr oduc in g p olo to Eng lan d, or d eveloping new tactics in battle, the Tenth was always in the lead. In the Boer War, when they exchanged gay uniforms for khaki, in the 14-18 War, when they fought amost entirely dismounted, in the 39-45 War, when they ha d co nver ted to t anks , a nd th rough every change of role since, these qualities remained unaltered, epitomised in the regimental saying 'Once a Tenth Hussar, always a Tenth Hussar', and in their pride as 'The Shiners', outshining all others ." Hamish Hamilton, London, 1967, first edition.
156 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions, music (Rule Britannia). "In this short history of the Royal Norfolk Regiment Tim Carew describes the interesting story of one of the most famous regiments of the li ne. From 1685 to the sad day in 1959 when the Royal Norfolks were amalgamated with the Suffolk Regiment to found the 1st East Anglian Regiment (Royal Norfolk and Suffolk), theirs has been a record of uninterrupted service in nearly every cam p a i g n f ought by the British Army since its early days. Indeed in the Second World War they won five V.C.s, more than any other Regiment. It is a magnificent story and this book justly presents the deeds of this great regiment in a form which w il l ap pe a l not only to those who served in the Royal Norfolks, but to anyone interested in military history." London Leo Cooper 1970 85052007X First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
320 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "The first organized unit to emerge (concentrating on the Army's supply and transport functions) was the Royal Waggoners, much later to become the Royal Army Service Corps. Since those days, although suffering from a variety of changes in uniform and title, the RASC have been with us in one way or another. Theirs is a remarkable history, and Graeme Crew has managed to convey in one short volume the enormous contribution the Corps has made to the military might and fighting strength of this country. Wherever the British Army were, the Corps made sure that its supplies, ammunition, petrol and every item of military equipment needed by troops in the combat line arrived in time, at the right place and in the right quantity. Without the RASC no army could survive. Their regimental march is 'Wait for the Waggon' - how glad so many of us have been in the past to know that it would always arrive...." "After more than 280 years of turbulent history, the Royal Fusiliers look back on a career that has taken them to nearly every country in which Englishmen have fought. The Fusilier has not always been well-treated, and not always well-liked, but his achievements - and his failures - have helped to decide the course of the British nation. Over the years, in their many campaigns, the Fusiliers developed a certain way of doing things, a certain style. They formed a tradition. And this tradition, because it grew out of the fundamentals of British character and British life, still has value for the soldiers of today." Leo Cooper, London, 1970, first edition.
122 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520363 B&w photographs, reproductions. "In (this volume) we have a regiment that began life as Marines at the time when the Royal Navy first penetrated into the Mediterranean; we have an other regiment, quite separate at that time from the first, taking part as the only complete unit in the otherwise best forgotten foray into the Highlands after Bonny Prince Charlie that ended disastrously at Prestonpans; and we have the crow n i n g g l ory of the defence of the Residency at Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. This in addition to participation in the American War of Independence, a reminder of which is still worn by all light infantrymen in their cap badge; the Peninsul ar W ar a n d Wa terloo and the wars in the Crimea, in Egypt and in South Africa. The story goes into two world wars and in the exploits here recorded it was west country men who, particularly in the second of them, provided the backbone of the D .C. L.I .'s ba tt al ion s. A regimental history would be a dull affair were it not for the records and diaries that past members have left behind them. The D.C.L.I. is particularly fortunate in its 'other rank' chroniclers and Privates Waterfiel d an d Me tcal fe, Cor por al R yder and Sergeant Philip are a quartet the interest and pungency of whose anecdotes it would be hard to beat...." "Lieutenant General Guy Granville Simonds was one of the Second World War's most dynamic strategists and commanded enormous respect from British generals such as Bernard Montgomery and Alan Brooke. (This book) tells the whole story for the first time, tracing Simonds's family origins and detailing his postwar career as Canada's top military man. The focus, though, is on Simonds's campaigns in World War II. Graham takes us from the rocky shores of Sicily to the fierce fighting in the Dutch polders, examining the military and political infighting that seemed to dog every hard-won mile of Simonds's successful march into the German Rhineland." 14 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by General Sir John Hackett. ARNHEM: A TRAGEDY OF ERRORS.
London Caxton 2000 1840671467 / 9781840671469 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Operation 'Market Garden' remains one of the most spectacular and controversial battles of the Second World War. It was a bold plan, aimed at shortening the course of the war dramatically. Key bridges in Holland seized in advance by a daring airborne 'coup de main' would be the means to a surprise thrust into the German industrial heartland. On the fiftieth anniversary of the operation, (the author) has pieced together an important new view of what was a considerable failure. Existing accounts direct most of the blame at XXX Corps, and two divisions in particular, for failing to push the ground advance forward. This new work sets out to provide an objective and realistic appraisal of why things went wrong - and who in truth should have borne the responsibility. Why, for example, were demands for proper signals equipment for the airborne troops ignored, with predictable consequences? Why was intelligence pointing towards the fatal presence of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions ignored before the operation? And why, with Allied air forces in a position to dominate the skies above the battlefield, was air support so lacking and ineffectual? While some of the questions needed for a definitive judgement can never be answered, this book represents an important step towards redressing the balance of criticism and allowing a new view of the bloody battles for Arnhem and Oosterbeek." "Packed with authentic atmosphere, the retreat and the desperate lifting of the weary soldiers is seen in its tragic entirety, often through first-hand reco llections of the men who were there. The story of Dunkirk is a dramatic epic of courage and confusion, resulting in a successful and often heroic evacuation....(Harris) describes in vivid detail how the evacuation developed, on a day-by-d a y b a s i s , and destroys more than one of the myths that have come to be associated with Dunkirk. However, the spirit, humour and drama that epitomised what came to be known as the 'spirit of Dunkirk' was, and is, undeniable. Illustrated wit h ma n y co nt em po ra r y photographs, this book provides a complete historical account of the lifting of the British expeditionary force in the first week of June 1940...." "Formed as heavy cavalry for Cromwell's spartan army (The Blues) have soldiered with the same steady qualities for over three centuries. For the c harge of a squadron of the Royal Horse Guards is no light thing: at Dettingen and Warburg, Waterloo and Tel-el-Kebir, many an enemy fell to the heavy cavalry swords. Sir Garnet Wolsely once asked a badly wounded trooper of The Blues what h a d h a p p e n ed to his assailant. 'I cut him in two, Sir,' was the immediate reply. The Blues fought on foot at Abu Klea, where their action in closing the square saved the column but cost them their colonel; used machine guns to deadly effect i n t he G re at W ar ; were the first troops into Brussels in 1944 (something of a race, one leading armoured car was commanded by a steeplechaser, another by a Master of Foxhounds); and even resorted to donkeys in Cyprus. Amalgamated with The Roy al D rag oon s i n M arc h 1 969 The Blues and Royals, as the new Regiment is now known, may still be seen on ceremonial duties outside Whitehall; it would be wise, however, not to forget their fighting record." 17 Howard, Philip. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLAND REGIMENT) (THE 42nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, reprint.
141 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520193 B&w photographs, reproductions. "The Royal Highlanders....the Gallant Forty-Two....The Germans christened them 'the ladies from hell'. Down the stormy centuries from Fontenoy to the Hook in Korea Britain's enemies have called them other less printable names. But when they were first raised as a police force to keep the peace in the turbulent and inaccessible Highlands, the locals nick-named them (in Gaelic, of course) the Black Watch. And the menacing name has stuck. Their old 'black' tartan has stuck too, and today is worn by imitators around the world from Tokyo to Trinidad. It was the first kilted regiment in the British army, the original ancestor of all the o ther famous regiments that were later raised in the Highlands. Until Waterloo Gaelic was the language of the Black Watch, and it is still spoken on occasions. They brought the bagpipes into the British army, because the Highlanders refused t o m a r c h without their pipes. In those early days they charged with claymore and dirk. Today they are fully motorized and mechanized for nuclear war. But the heart of the Black Watch is still Highland. The stern old regiment still keeps it s un i qu e tr ad itions. In the wild places of the world, in the most ferocious battles of the British army where victory was balanced on a bayonet point, the Black Watch has usually been there. And still today he is a man of lead whose imaginati on do es no t tin gl e when the hears the pipes play 'Hieland Laddie' (pipe score at rear of book), and sees the long lines of kilts swinging jauntily down the hill." 20 Norton, G.G. Introduction by Lt-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE RED DEVILS: FROM BRUNEVAL TO THE FALKLANDS. (NEW EDITION). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1984, 2nd edition.
310 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0436315254 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "From Bruneval to North Africa, from Normandy to Suez, by parachute and glider the men of the Airborne Forces have gone by air to battle. But their activities have by no means been confined to purely airborne operations - the Special Air Service performed prodigies of valour behind the German Lines in the Western Desert and Italy; the Glider Pilot Regiment fought beside their infantry com rades in Normandy, at Arnhem and across the Rhine. Their post-war successors, maintaining these traditions, have stood between Jew and Arab in Palestine; fought and sweltered in the jungles of Malaya and Borneo; sweated in the Persian Gulf a n d t h e Radfan; choked on the summer dust of Cypriot roads; tasted the grit and sand of Egypt and Jordan in their mess tins; spent more than a deade facing terroritst ambush, bombs and bullets in Northern Ireland; exprienced the subzero temperat ur es an d bi t ing actic winds of the South Atlantic and 'tabbed' across the Falklands to spearhead victory in 1982. Nor should the aircrews who flew them be forgotten, or the air supply despatchers who maintained them, and the units who supporte d t hem . W it h w el l over 100 photographs and illustrations this book is a comprehensive single-volume history of the Airborne Forces. Accounts are given of the airborne actions fought by the British Army, whilst the development of the parachu te a ssau lt and th e us e o f glider-borne troops can be followed from their infancy to the massive 'coup de main' technique employed in the Rhine crossing."
