124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

292 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "The second battle of Ypres provided the First Canadian Division with its baptism of fire, and it could not have been worse. They were holding a salient, jutting out so that they were targets from three sides. The Germans, for the first time ever, used chlorine gas, which turned the Canadians' bayonets green and destroyed their lungs. Then they discovered that in combat conditions their Ross rifles jammed, as the waves of Germans hit their trenches. At the end John McCrae looked across the battleground where so many hundreds of his countrymen had fallen, and wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. Back in Canada, the war began in earnest the day the casualty lists were posted. 278 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Hans-Ulrich Rudel was called 'the Eagle of the Eastern Front'. This pastor's son from Silesia, born in 1916, Colonel and last Commodore of the successful Stuka squadron 'Immelmann', was the only soldier in World War II to receive the highest German decoration for bravery. The Golden Oak Leaves with Swords and Jewels to the Knight's Cross recognized his unique number of superlative achievements. With 2530 combat missions and his total of successes, unbeaten in all times and nations, he stands far in the front of the world's renowned aerial aces. In low-level attacks, often in the heaviest defensive fire, in his slow 'Cannon-bird' he destroyed 519 Soviet tanks - 17 of them on a single day! On the list of scores achieved by this Stuka combat pilot, who became a living legend to the soldiers of the Eastern Front, there stood at war's end, among others, 1 battleship, 1 cruiser, 1 destroyer, 70 landing craft and nine attested aircraft, plus hundreds of motor vehicles, numerous artillery, anti-tank and anti-aircraft postions, as well as armored convoys and bridges. Twelve comrades - six Stuka crews - were saved by him from capture or death. When he tried to rescue another crash-landed crew from Russian territory in 1944, he was taken prisoner, fled with a bullet in his shoulder, covered some 50 kilometers through the Soviet hinterlands, and reached the German lines again. Shortly after this audacious, exhausting flight, the wounded man was flying in combat again. Shot more than thirty times by ground fire - but never once by a fighter plane - wounded five times, the fervent sportsman took a direct anti-aircraft hit on the Odor front and lost his right leg. Just six weeks later the 'Bravest of the Brave', as the soldiers also called him, was flying again despite being forbidden to ---" This is a heavy book and may require extra postage, depending on destination. 11 Martin, Gwen L. GESNER'S DREAM: THE TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS OF EARLY MINING IN NEW BRUNSWICK.
Fredericton, New Brunswick Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum 2003 1894475461 / 9781894475464 Very Good+
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, reproductions - colour maps. Inscribed by author on half title page. "Whenever you read this book, whether by day or by night, miners are at work in New Brunswick. Their underground world is magical and terrifying. Caverns traced by fragile points of light recede into utter blackness, and the stone walls expose swirls of rock frozen in three dimensions. Overhead are vaulted ceilings, silent and beautiful as a Gothic cathedral. The heritage of New Brunswick mining reaches back over three action-packed centuries. Gypsum smugglers sailed down the Bay of Fundy by midnight. Mine developers battled each other using fists in the boardroom and pisols in the field. Many prospectors died without making a dime, while others lost their rightful holdings at gunpoint. And a lucky or skillful few hit the jackpot. The romantic, lively and ultimately triumphant tale of mining in New Brunswick is revealed here for the first time, richly illustrated with more than 140 historical photographs gathered from archives and attics across the province." THE AVRO LANCASTER., Mason, Francis K.
12 Mason, Francis K. THE AVRO LANCASTER.
Aston, (Bourne End, Bucks, 1989).
437 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos (some aerial), maps, reproductions, fold-out color cutaway. "...the most extensive chronicle of a British bomber ever undertaken - of more than half a million words - describes how the Lancaster came into being and how it fulfilled the faith placed in it by those who planned it. From the consuming belief, espoused by Trenchard between the Wars, that the heavy bomber was the raison d'etre of the R oyal Air Force, to the realisation that Britain, faced in 1936 with the likelihood of war with Germany, was still without an aircraft that could hit the enemy capital with worthwhile bombs. Thus was developed the famous trio of true heavy bombers, the Stirling, Halifax and Lancaster. And by the end of that war, the Lancaster equipped 60 out of Bomber Command's 80 heavy bomber squadrons; more than 1,3000 out of 1,850 British heavy bombers were Lancasters...the Author has made reference to all the outstanding raids undertaken in an extraordinary compendium of individual 'histories' of every Lancaster built (over 7,000 of them), and mention is made of several thousand individual crew members - separately indexed for ease of reference. Th e book contains hundreds of photographs (many from previously untapped sources) as well as maps and diagrams, and a separate Chapter - including cutaway and general arrangements drawings, executed by the Author in colour-describesthe Lancaster in considerable detail." Contents: Towards a Strategic Bombing Force; The Reluctant Transition: Farewell to Biplanes; Heavyweights - With Two Engines; Odds Too Great; The Lancaster is Born; The First Lancaster Squadrons; The Coming of the Pathfinders; No Corner of the Reich; Special People for a Special Job; The Battle of the Ruhr; The Battle of Hamburg; The Battle of Berlin; Nuremburg and Overlord; More Special Operations; In Support of the Armies; The Last Six Months; The Transition from War ; Lancasters in the Laboratory; In Other Air Forces; They Also Served; The Lancaster Described; Appendices - Deployment of Manchester and Lancaster Units; Awards of the Victoria Cross and the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal; Lancaster and Manchester Production, Allocation and Service; Lancasters with High Raid Tallies; Glossary; Bibliography. E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL., Moore, Doris Langley.
13 Moore, Doris Langley. E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL.
Philadelphia Chilton Books 1966 Very Good Very Good -
313 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Publication of this first biography ever written about E. Nesbit (1858-1924), whose books for children have delighted readers young and old, is a literary event of major importance. Mrs. Langley Moore has written a new introduction to the present edition, telling a number of things that had to be omitted from the original work, when so many of E. Nesbit's contemporaries or members of her family were still alive. Also, the entire book has been revised and relevant material that either had to be left out originally, or has been discovered since, has been added. Edith Nesbit married Hubert Bland, a young journalist and enthusiastic Socialist, in 1880. He took the chair at the first meeting of the Fabian Society and both were active in the Fabian movement. When Bland, while ill, was defrauded by a business partner, Edith Nesbit was forced to earn the family's living. She began to write poems, short stories, and recitiations, and made hand painted Christmas cards. After fifteen years of literary hack work, in which she produced some thirty-three books, she hit her stride with the writing of 'The Treasure Seekers', the first of the stories about the irrepressible Bastable children. Among the other books that have made her a household favorite are 'The Wouldbegoods', 'Five Children and It', 'The House of Arden', and 'The Story of the Amulet'. (The author) has given us a remarkable portrait of the genesis of a writer, and the writer's world. In seeking out her information she contacted many of the most eminent literary and theatrical figures in England at the time." Minor toning to margins of pages, light toning and faint foxing mark on fore-edge of text block, minor soiling on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, general light browning - more on spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear sticker removal/soiling mark at top corner of front panel, very small foxing mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

14 Retan, Walter and Risom, Ole. (Richard Scarry.) THE BUSY, BUSY WORLD OF RICHARD SCARRY.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1997 0810940000 / 9780810940000 First Edition Very Good Very Good- Richard Scarry.
159 pp, 4to (12" H). Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout in color and b&w with photographs and reproductions of Scarry's work. "In dozens of books, with hundreds and hundreds of illustrations, Scarry revealed to kids that the everyday world was a place that could be understood - and that learning was fun. Scarry's 'Best Word Book Ever', for example, puts names to everyday objects; 'Busy, Busy World' explores geography country by country; and 'What Do People Do All Day?' delivers exactly what the title promises. Such a man is worth knowing more about, and this first biography presents the debonair, humorous, charming figure that Scarry was. In words and pictures the book traces (his) life from his roots in Boston to a post-World War II art school training and a brief career in advertising. Bored with selling products, Scarry put himself forward as a children's book illustrator and began turning out pictures for other people's words. Soon, he himself was writing texts, and eventually he hit upon the magic touch that catapulted him to nearly universal popularity - a menagerie full of animal characters who behaved like humans, but with unfailing good humor and grace. Through the personalities of these often mischievous creatures - the ubiquitous Lowly Worm, Tinker and Tanker, Sergeant Murphy - whom children could identify with but not have to worry about, Scarry conceived a parade of books that parents and children alike could pore over for pictures or read time after time. Long before Waldo challenged young eyes to find him in picture books, Goldbug was hiding here and there on Scarry's pages. Learning more about the charm of those books and the genius of the man who created them will enlighten and delight any reader of this book." Small tear (archivally taped) at bottom edge of title page, very light wear and a few tiny dents at bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear, edge wrinkling, one small tear archivally taped, crease at top edge of front flap.

OSWALD MOSLEY., Skidelsky, Robert.
15 Skidelsky, Robert. OSWALD MOSLEY.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1975.
578 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0030865808 B&w plates. "The theme of Robert Skidelsky's brilliant biography is one of double tragedy - the self-destruction of Mosley and the failure of the British ruling class to meet the challenge of the twentieth-century. Describing Mosley's early life, Mr Skidelsky lays particular stress on his landed background and his experiences in the trenches during the first world war, both vital factors in forming his character and outlook . There follows his meteoric political rise in the 1920s, when as one of the few politicians who became 'Keynesians' he seemed more than anyone to have grasped the economic problems facing Britain. Frustrated and disillusioned by Ramsay M a c D o n a l d ' s leadership, he resigned from the Labour Government in 1930 at the age of thirty-four and founded first the short-lived New Party, then the British Union of Fascists. (The author) describes Mosley's turbulent career in the 1930 s wh en t he B UF ' to ok politics into the streets', his period in prison during the war as 'Churchill's guest', and finally his present view of world problems. Mr Skidelsky squarely confronts Mosley's most controversial fascist activities: th e gre at ral lie s a nd mar che s w hich often led to violence; his attack on the Jews and his campaign in the East End of London; and his opposition to the second world war which ended with his detention under Regulartion 18B. Drawing extensively on hit her to u npub lish ed Cabi net Pape rs and police reports (including those of the Special Branch), the author skilfully disentangles fact from mythology, and presents for the first time the full evidence on which an informed judgment on Mosl ey' s mot ives and respo nsibi lit y in thes e mat ters can be based; as well as shedding a new and unexpected light on police and government attitudes to fascism in the 1930s...." 306 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "On the night of 12 May 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe, a surgeon on special assignment with Britain's SOE parachuted behind enemy lines into German-occupied Yugoslavia. His mission, code-named 'Toffee', was to provide medical aid to the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia: the ragtag band of unsung heroes who were Marshal Tito's Partisans. Dafoe, a native of Madoc, Ontario, was no stranger to combat - he had served with the British 8th Army in Tobruk and El Alamein in North Africa - but nothing he had experienced in the deserts of Africa had prepared him for the war in occupied Yugoslavia. The hit-and-run tactics of guerrilla fighting in mountainous terrain made a mockery of conventional medical procedures, but Dafoe was a devoted and ingenious surgeon who put his skills to the test time and time again, despite incredible hardship and danger. In an operating room constructed from parachutes, Dafoe operate on the maimed and wounded, who were brought from miles around to receive his expert attention." Tiny wrinkle at top of rear hinge. This fertile and isolated place has been home to humans for nearly half a million years, and modern archaeologists are using high-tech methods to decipher how desert-dwelling Africans gave birth to the great Nile civilization. A perfect Old Kingdom town has been unearthed, replete with palaces and temples from the Golden Age of ancient Egypt. Awed archaeologists continue their excavation of an entire Roman city - a 'desert Pompeii' - buried by the inexorable march of the Sahara, where they have already uncovered a stunning cache of mummies, a Roman-era archive of 10,000 papyri, and the world's two oldest books. Combining elements of adventure travelogue and scientific detective story, (this book) explores the fragile balance between an over-reaching humanity and its environment, and unveils an utterly fascinating chapter of human history."
