THE CANAL BUILDERS., Burton, Anthony.
5 Burton, Anthony. THE CANAL BUILDERS.
London Eyre Methuen 1972 413284107 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
230 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(T)he story of the men who, in little more than half a century from 1760, created a network of canals that revolutionised transport and represent-ed the greatest achievement in civil engineering in Britain since the Romans. In those few years between the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in 1761 and the coming of the railways early in the nine-teenth century, tens of thousands of men were involved in canal construction. They came from all classes of society - from aristocratic promoters like the Duke of Bridgewater to Irish peasants who came to dig. This book is the first to deal exclusively with the canal builders and to try to place them in the context of the social, economic, and political world of the eighteenth century, and draws skilfuly on contemporary documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and letters." Burton follows the story through the promoters (like Josiah Wedgwood) and the financiers, to the engineers (including Brindley, Telford, Rennie, Jessop & Smeaton) and the 'navvies' who actually did the digging, "from Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland". Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, a few very light rub lines on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, fading to spine color (title is still dark and legible), two small edge tears archivally taped, minor browning to inside top/bottom edges.

10 Goldsmith, R.F.K. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE DUKE OF CORNWALL'S LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 32nd AND 46th REGIMENTS OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1970, first edition.
122 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520363 B&w photographs, reproductions. "In (this volume) we have a regiment that began life as Marines at the time when the Royal Navy first penetrated into the Mediterranean; we have an other regiment, quite separate at that time from the first, taking part as the only complete unit in the otherwise best forgotten foray into the Highlands after Bonny Prince Charlie that ended disastrously at Prestonpans; and we have the crow n i n g g l ory of the defence of the Residency at Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. This in addition to participation in the American War of Independence, a reminder of which is still worn by all light infantrymen in their cap badge; the Peninsul ar W ar a n d Wa terloo and the wars in the Crimea, in Egypt and in South Africa. The story goes into two world wars and in the exploits here recorded it was west country men who, particularly in the second of them, provided the backbone of the D .C. L.I .'s ba tt al ion s. A regimental history would be a dull affair were it not for the records and diaries that past members have left behind them. The D.C.L.I. is particularly fortunate in its 'other rank' chroniclers and Privates Waterfiel d an d Me tcal fe, Cor por al R yder and Sergeant Philip are a quartet the interest and pungency of whose anecdotes it would be hard to beat...." Includes the music and lyrics for the Regimental March 'One and All' and lyrics for 'Trelawny'. Fain t cig arett e odo r, l ight wri nkli ng at top/bottom of spine, browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, tiny chips and tears at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning on spine and flap-folds. Very G ood/Go od+

"For decades, the last scions of the Dunladry have languished in luxurious exile, growing soft and weak in the comforts of the Feyan court. Now their highland home cries out for its rulers - Duncan, with his virgin blade, and Mhairi, his sister - to lead the clans in a struggle for freedom from the usurping tyrant. But their battle is no ordinary one of sword and steel. For the priest-servants of the usurper have the very forces of darkness at their command. In the first test of his sword against a shape-shifting demon, the young king falls...And the fate of the empire lies in the hands of Mhairi, who must answer the call of her blood...as woman, as warrior, and as queen!" THE LOVE SONGS AND HEROINES OF ROBERT BURNS., Hill, John C., Rev. (Robert Burns.)
13 Hill, John C., Rev. (Robert Burns.) THE LOVE SONGS AND HEROINES OF ROBERT BURNS.
J.M. Dent, London, 1961, first edition.
155 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Many who sing the love songs of Robert Burns have no idea of the heroines in whose honour they were composed. Mr. Hill's book provides the necessary information, for it comprises a collection of the poet's love lyrics set in a series of pen pictures of the 'garden of girls' to whom they are addressed. The songs are thus given their proper background, and the story connected with each heroine is fully and admirably told. This identification adds greatly to the interest of the songs....The poems are annotated where Scottish expressions need definition." 14 Howard, Philip. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLAND REGIMENT) (THE 42nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, reprint.
141 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520193 B&w photographs, reproductions. "The Royal Highlanders....the Gallant Forty-Two....The Germans christened them 'the ladies from hell'. Down the stormy centuries from Fontenoy to the Hook in Korea Britain's enemies have called them other less printable names. But when they were first raised as a police force to keep the peace in the turbulent and inaccessible Highlands, the locals nick-named them (in Gaelic, of course) the Black Watch. And the menacing name has stuck. Their old 'black' tartan has stuck too, and today is worn by imitators around the world from Tokyo to Trinidad. It was the first kilted regiment in the British army, the original ancestor of all the o ther famous regiments that were later raised in the Highlands. Until Waterloo Gaelic was the language of the Black Watch, and it is still spoken on occasions. They brought the bagpipes into the British army, because the Highlanders refused t o m a r c h without their pipes. In those early days they charged with claymore and dirk. Today they are fully motorized and mechanized for nuclear war. But the heart of the Black Watch is still Highland. The stern old regiment still keeps it s un i qu e tr ad itions. In the wild places of the world, in the most ferocious battles of the British army where victory was balanced on a bayonet point, the Black Watch has usually been there. And still today he is a man of lead whose imaginati on do es no t tin gl e when the hears the pipes play 'Hieland Laddie' (pipe score at rear of book), and sees the long lines of kilts swinging jauntily down the hill." Faint cigarette odor, minor edge wear, minor browning on spine. 148 pp, 8 5/8" H. "Britain has just declared war on Germany and (Maureen's) father has been sent to the Front, where casualties are heavy. Her mother is trooping off eagerly - too eagerly, (she) thinks - to London 'to help with the war effort'. And Maureen is being shipped off to the stuffy-sounding Logan Academy for Young Ladies, a remote but supposedly safe boarding school in the Scottish Highlands. The girls at the school are just as Maureen expects: cold and cliquish, completely cowed by their cruel ringleader, Kathleen. But there's also something weird about these girls, something sinister. Why do they slip away in the middle of the night, one by one, to visit the woods surrounding the school? What's their secret society, called the Seven Magpies, all about - and why does it make them seem so nervous? It isn't until Maureen herself falls under the spell of a strange stone, a stone that compels her to leave it offerings of food, that she begins to understand what's making her schoolmates seem so strange. And then she discovers what the real danger is - - . A realistic yet magical story of what happens when a group of teenagers tampers with the ancient power of the Celts." THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE., Keightley, Thomas.
17 Keightley, Thomas. THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE.
New York Avenel 1978 0517263130 / 9780517263136 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
560 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. First Avenel reprinting of the 1878 G. Bell edition. "Kelpies, Korrigans, Pixies and Peries, Deeves, Brownies, and Bugaboos - these are just a few of the fantastic figures you will encounter in this unique collection of fairy mythology. Gnomes, faries, and elves of every imaginable size, shape, color, and demeanor spring to life in this marvelously illustrated guide to the fairy realm. Just one glance at the extensive table of contents reveals the scope and variety of fairy folklore explored here - from Persian and Arabian romance to the mythology of Scandinavia, England, France, Germany, and Switzerland. In addition, the author includes sections dealing with the more obscure fairy folkore and tradition of Greece, Spain, Italy, Africa, and the Middle East. Indeed, (he) has left no stone unturned in accomplishing the task he set for himself: 'to collect, arrange and classify and give under one point of view the various ideas and legends respecting fairies and similar beings of the popular creed.' Taken from a variety of sources of popular myth and legend, (it) forms a rich compendium of the superstitions surrounding those enchanting lesser deities, 'the little people'. Not only does (he) explore every type and species, but he also traces resemblances and similarities among the fairy traditions of different countries. For instance, did you know that the Nis (Scandianavia), the Kobold (Germany), and the Goblin (England) are all names for one species, which appears in Scotland under the name of Brownie, and that the Brownie is a person of small stature and wrinkled visage, is covered with short and curly brown hair, and wears a brown mantle and hood? In addition, Keightley discusses the fairy tradition as it appears in major works of English literature, from the Middle Age epic of 'Beowulf' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' to Spencer's 'The Faerie Queene' and Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." Light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two repaired small tears at top of spine. Dust jacket has several archivally taped tears - mainly at top of spine/hinges - one with creases, light browning at top inside of spine.

New York Broadway Books 2001 0767907566 / 9780767907569 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
239 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "In the spring of 1999, armed with little more than a descriptiion from a book and a map labeled 'all elevations unknown', Sam Lightner and his German rock-climbing buddy, Volker, found themselves deep in the jungles of Borneo on a mission to climb a mountain that was only rumored to exist. They had only their climbing expertise to rely on and a copy of a little-known book titled 'World Within', written by Major Tom Harrisson, a British World War II soldier who had been one of the first white men ever to explore the interior jungles of the island and interact with its native peoples. He had also constructed one of the most daring and unusual campaigns in military history: In 1945, he had been assigned the near-impossible mission of parachuting blindly into the thick Borneo rain forests to unite the feuding native tribes - who then had a grisly habit of cutting off heads - against the Japanese in order to reclaim the island for the Allies. A captivating, utterly original combination of travel-adventure memoir and historical re-creation, (this book) charts Lightner's exhilarating, often harrowing quest to ascend the mountain Batu Lawi in the face of leeches, vipers, and sweat bees, and to keep his team together in one of the earth's most treacherous uncharted pockets. Along the way, (he) reconstructs a fascinating historical narrative that chronicles Tom Harrisson's adventures in Borneo during the war and illuminates an astonishing piece of forgotten World War II history. Rife with suspense and vivid detail, the two intertwining tales open up the island of Borneo, its people, and its history in a powerful, unforgettable way, and take adventure writing to new heights - ultimately the remarkable story of two adventures, separated by fifty years and united by one mountain." Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling along top edge, minor rubbing.
