CANADA & THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION 1774-1783., Lanctot, Gustave. Translated by Margaret M. Cameron.
1 Lanctot, Gustave. Translated by Margaret M. Cameron. CANADA & THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION 1774-1783.
George G. Harrap, London, 1967.
321 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "The propagandists in the American Revolution were many, and the pattern of their interaction was complex. There were pressure groups in Canada, in the American colonies, and in Great Britain, each motivated by self-interest and self-faith. The British, the Americans, the French-Canadian priests and seigneurs, the French under Lafayette, and the French-Canadian habitant all tried to manipulate the others. The c h a r a c t e r s and factions of the Revolutionary drama appear and disappear intermittently on the scene as the author gives a detailed chronological relation of the events that took place in Canada. The agitation preceding and following the pas sa ge o f th e Qu eb ec Act, and the invasions of Arnold, Allen, and Montgomery are seen against the backdrop of action taking place in the American colonies. Not only has the author conveyed the complexity of the period, but he has done so with sym pat het ic ho ne sty , a nd p resents both the strengths and weaknesses of the parties involved. Carleton may be tolerant to the interests of his subjects, but he is also too hesitant to punish, too inclined to procrastinate. The habitant has ten acio us l oya lty to his own lan d and family, but preserves these by shifting allegiances or by maintaining a neutralist position....This finely-drawn picture of Canada during the Revolutionary period will give the reader a deeper understandin g of the c harac teri stic s o f bo th F renc h- and English-speaking Canadians." Dust jacket has creasing and wear at top/b ottom of spi ne an d fla p fo lds, a few smal l c losed tears - archivally taped, light browning, light rubbing. Very Good/Very Good-

(Maria Luisa Moncassoli Tibone, Salvatore Ciro Nappo, Milena Ercole Pozzoli, Giuseppe Mazzocchi, Michael Leech, Maria Longhena, Paola Calore, Heidi Bocker, Peter Kristiansen, Frantisek Kadlec, Thomas Thiis-Evensen, et al. THE WORLD'S GREATEST ROYAL PALACES. Grange, Hoo, Rochester, 2000.
304 pp, folio (14 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840133732 Profusely illustrated in colour. "Built to astonish and to celebrate the magnificence of the most powerful families in the world, royal palaces and houses are the consequences of an age in which the splendor and opulence of a prince or a people could be measured by the decor of a salon, by the grandeur of a building or the originality of a fountain. Suspended between the sky and the earth, as occurred in the Far East, or solidly rooted to the ground, as was the norm in Europe, the house of the monarch has alwys been the meeting point of two minds: that of the master, who saw in his house the expression of his power and creativity, and that of the architect a n d t e a m s of craftsmen who built it for him, often creating a noble monument rather than a place to live....This book tells of the mysteries and legends of the buildings and the official and secret versions of the history of their occupants. T he t e xt i s co mplemented by a series of splendid photographs that together offer the reader a visit through space and time to the most famous palaces of the world where the lives of royal families and their courts burned bright and where bea uty mi xed w ith po we r."
