2 Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.)
Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." THE WARS OF THE ANCIENT GREEKS AND THEIR INVENTION OF WESTERN MILITARY CULTURE., Hanson, Victor Davis. General editor, John Keegan.
9 Hanson, Victor Davis. General editor, John Keegan. THE WARS OF THE ANCIENT GREEKS AND THEIR INVENTION OF WESTERN MILITARY CULTURE.
Cassell, London, 1999, first edition.
224 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 155278102X Profusely illustration in colour and b&w with photograph, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "This brilliant account, full of unique insights into the warfare of Ancient Gre ece, covers a millenium of war: from the development of the Greek city-state, to the Persian Wars; from the Peloponnesian War of the late fifth century BC, to the military revolution of the fourth century BC and the end of the citizen militia u n d e r Philip, to the rise of Alexander the Great and the Hellenization of the western world. Throughout, (the author) places the reader in the thick of the battle - transforming the distant figures of survey and atlas to real people who killed a nd d ie d. With wonderfully descriptive illustrations of battle scenes and explanatory maps, this study brings a much needed reality to military scholarship. (He) brings vividly to life the reality of hoplite fighting and the gruelling challe nge of a cul tur e in which battle was an expected and regular part of life. A man's contribution on the battlefield was tremendously important: for his own epitaph Aeschylus wrote of having fought at Marathon, but made no mention at all of havi ng w ritt en the monu me ntal triology, th 'Oresteia'. The list of notable Greeks at war contains name after famous name - philosophers, playwrights, poets, historians - all of whom, at one time or other, had killed in hand-to-hand fighting. Sopho cles, Socr ate s, D emost hen es - each fought in battle armed only with spear and shield. War formed the backdrop of centuries of Greek civilization. The unique practice of Ancient Greek warfare explains how the rise of western civilization and many o f its inst ituti ons we re o riginally an integral part of the conduct of war." 668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world."
