DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN., Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian.
3 Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian. DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN.
Midland Counties, (Leicester, 1988).
200 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Few nations in history came into the world so empty-handed as Pakistan. Born at the stroke of midnight on 14 August 1947, it's bounded in the east by India, in the north by China and the Soviet Union and in the west by Afghanistan and in the south-west by Iran. More recently a simmering war - perhaps the most astonishing one of all - goes on at heights of more than 20,000 feet, in the great H imalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges of northern Pakistan. On its North-West Frontier, the Afghans of the Soviet puppet-regime in Kabul raid and harass Pakistan border posts and villages in the Hindu Kush and the mountains of the famous Khyber Pass. They meet indomitable defence. Yet all it had at the start was courage - and the formidable legacy of the martial Muslims of Asia: pride, discipline, efficiency and unquenchable faith. Out of this came inspired performance. This is the full, remarkable story of the bravest of the brave...the story of how a frail young nation, born amid tumult and bloodshed, threatened on all sides, transformed itself into a major fighting machine." Faint cigarette odor. Dust jacket has mino rrubbing, light edge creasing along top edge, tiny tear and light wear at top of spine. VG+/VG

THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813., Berton, Pierre.
6 Berton, Pierre. THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1980 0771012357 / 9780771012358 Limited First Edition, Specially Bound. Hard Cover Near Fine Tom McNeely, endpapers.
363 pp, 9 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, maps/battle plans. Blue (faux?) leather spine with gilt lettering & decoration, gray boards with blue decoration on front board. "This first edition copy - is one of a limited number (unspecified) which have been specially bound and slipcased" from the copyright page. " To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Tiny area of glue residue at the edge of the rear board leather. Slipcase has a tiny edge scuff on rear panel, a few very small minor soiling marks on front panel.

LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES., Colville, Robert.
14 Colville, Robert. LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES.
Robert Hale, London, 1951, first edition.
268 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, fold-out map at rear. "The area which is the subject of this book is one of great variety and contrast. From Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath the land slopes away to busy and conge sted Camden Town; in Somers Town vast building schemes are carried out beside quiet old squares; historic houses stand near to new and prosperous residential quarters. There is an astonishing variety of institutions, from the Zoo and Holl o w a y a n d P entonville prisons to University colleges and other places of learning and research, from the Caledonian Market to the ancient foundation of Queen Matilda. Over the whole scene hangs the atmosphere both of accomplished and pending c ha ng e. T he g r ea t railway companies, four of whose termini profoundly affect the life of parts of the area, are nationalised; the well-run private house, once the hall mark of the Northern Heights, is giving way to blocks of flats. Mr Co lvi lle de scr i bes th is ch ang ing scene and its implications in an objective and impartial manner. Although the time is the present, the past is used to explain developments and tendancies, and a clear picture of an area in transition appears ." THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776., Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman.
19 Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776.
Sarpedon, New York, 1995.
206 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 188511902X B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "It is not often realized that in Brooklyn, New York, for a few tense hours in 1776, the fate of the entire United States hung by a thread. An American defeat, the Battle of Brooklyn has been all but neglected in our collective memory for what it earned with the blood of its participants - honored status as one of history's great battles. Besides being the largest cl ash of the Revolution, in terms of both troops and casualties, the action at Brooklyn (sometimes called 'The Battle of Long Island') brought the fledgling American republic to the brink of disaster. At the height of the fighting, only the va l i a n t s acrifice of one regiment - the Marylanders - staved off a catastrophe. The British army, meanwhile, executed a three-pronged surprise assault with admirable professionalism. The wilds of Brooklyn became a killing ground for the Britis h an d He ss i an troops who were able to begin the war convinced the colonials would not be able to stand against their onslaught of bullets and steel. While a drama of rare instensity on its surface, the Battle of Brooklyn also holds a larger si gn ifi ca nce : t he Ki ng's men did not invade Brooklyn to face other kings' men; they were sent to fight a population. Rules of engagement were uncertain and passions for and against the rebellion ran high. When the smoke cleared at Brooklyn, i n 1 776, th e mo dern ag e of 'democratic warfare' had begun....The Battle of Brooklyn was a victory for the British Empire. But contained within the triumph was a demonstration of the type of American resolve and courage that would eventually r esul t in inde pende nce f or t he Un ited States." Faint cigarette odor.
