Volumes 1-8 & 10 of the TimeWars Series, 6 7/8" H. The series revolves around a 27th century organization tasked with preventing time travellers from altering history. In the books, many people & events we consider fictional are real and vice versa and there are many references to famous literature and authors. 1. The Ivanhoe Gambit - 209 pp, 1984 first printing, ISBN 0441377629 - Sometimes Sergeant Major Lucas Priest wondered why he had enlisted in the U.S. Army Temporal Corps. Fighting in the Time Wars wasn't the easiest way to make a living. But a demented scheme to impersonate the King of England was threatening to change the course of history. Two army teams had already failed to intercept the madman. So Lucas and his men must clock back to the twelfth century to try and prevent an irreversible split in time." 2. The Timekeeper Conspiracy - 215 pp, 1984 second printing, ISBN 0441811361 - "Captain Lucas Priest, a seasoned veteran of the Temporal Corps, was dispatched to seventheenth century France. In the world of Cardinal Richelieu and the Three Musketeers, he must infiltrate the terrorist underground called the Timekeepers and put an end to their mad schemes forever." 3. The Pimpernel Plot - 211 pp, 1985 second printing, ISBN 0441664105 - Now Lucas is faced with the greatest challenge of his career: to readjust the events of the French Revolution and correct the blunder made by an agent of the Temporal Corps. Alex Corderro, in his first hitch in Minus Time, had caused the death of Sir Percy Blakeney, the English aristocrat who played a key role in saving French royalists from the guillotine. Someone had to impersonate Blakeney and carry out his task." 4. The Zenda Vendetta - 206 pp, 1985 first printing, ISBN 0441959156 - "In the kingdom of Ruritania, Prince Rudolf is about to be crowned king. Instead, due to the machinations of his half brother, he becomes the 'Prisoner of Zenda'. That was back in the 19th century. But history is about to repeat itself - with a twist. The Timekeepers, the terrorist underground from the 27th century, have traveled backward once again to try to sabotage the course of history." 5. The Nautilus Sanction - 196 pp, 1985 first printing, ISBN 0441565662 - "(T)he Nautilus, a Russian supersub armed with enough nuclear firepower to blow history apart at the seams, has been hijacked from the 27th century. Priest and his commandos clock back to pursue the sub, and come face-to-face with a man whose thirst for revenge is so great he would start the greatest war of all time - everywhere at once! To stop him, the Time Commandos have only the help of the Canadian fisherman, Ned Land, and a middle-aged French writer of voyages extraordinaires named Jules Verne - ." 6. The Khyber Connection - 195 pp, 1986 first printing, ISBN 04414375257 - "The year was 1897. The Khyber Pass echoed with the sounds of war. Soldiers from Britain, India, and Afghanistan were immersed in a bloody conflict. Enter the Time Commandos. Their mission: To foil a plot that has set timelines on a collision course. Only they can save the timestream from disruption - with a little help from a war correspondent named Winston Churchill - and a waterboy called Gunga Din." 7. The Argonaut Affair - 195 pp, 1987 first printing, ISBN 0441029116 - "A creature of Greek myth appears in the 27th century - proving that something is seriously wrong down the timeline! The Temporal Intelligence Agency fear an oncoming disaster of staggering proportions. Delaney, Cross, and their new partner Steiger clock back to the age of gods, monsters and heroes - into the heart of an epic quest. Lost in a legendary time and place, the future of two universes is in their hands!" 8. The Dracula Caper - 212 pp, 1988 first printing, ISBN 0441166164 - "A plague of vampires and werewolves falls on Victoria's England - but there's nothing supernatural about these creatures. They're genetically engineered monsters from the far future, dropped into the past as a devilish tactic in the Time Wars! It's a mystery more baffling than any penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - a cosmic riddle to stagger the imagination of the great H.G. Wells. Soon the creators of Sherlock Holmes and 'The Time Machine' join forces with the Time Commandos to combat an ageless evil which strains the very fabric of the universe!". 10. The Hellfire Revolution - 192 pp, 1990 first printing, ISBN 0441812627 - "Boston, 1765. The freedom-fighting Sons of Liberty are under attack by a Tory secret society called the Hellfire Club. The club's leader - the headless horseman - is a ghostly creature seemingly invulnerable to blades and musket balls. His plot to assassinate Sam Adams, Ben Franklin and George Washington will detroy every dream of the Thirteen Colonies - and cancel the United States of America! Can the Time Commandos wage war against a phantom? And worse yet, can they stop a cosmic catastrophe that will make the Big Band look like a firecracker?" 352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. 5 Irving, Washington. Introduction by Alexander Eliot. TWO TALES. RIP VAN WINKLE AND THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW.
San Diego Harcourt Brace Jovanovich 1984 0151922802 / 9780151922802 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Barry Moser.
54 pp + b&w plates and "Notes on the Prints", 11" H. "Washington Irving's two tales, 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and 'Rip Van Winkle' have remained a permanent feature on the American literary landscape long after the bulk of his twenty-four volume work has faded into scholarly obscurity. Present-day readers can be grateful that Irving forsook the study of law for literature on the basis of these two works alone. Edgar Allen Poe called him 'the most deservedly eminent among all the pioneers of American literature', and he was accepted as a peer by contemporaries Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron. Irving kept a sketchbook of his travels, and his painter's eye has attracted such master illustrators as Barry Moser, whose wood engravings were created especially for this volume and who also designed the text." A few tiny minor scuffs to top edge of boards, remainder mark on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, small ghost sticker mark on fornt panel, tiny scuff and a tiny white dot in title on front panel, minor soiling on rear panel.
