69 pp, + large b&w plate section (photographs, reproductions), 11 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth with gold lettering on spine, gold crest on front board. "(C)elebrates the quincentenary of the introduction of printing at Oxford with a pictorial history of its subsequent progress, illustrated by the books, documents, and pictures which are its tangible record. The story, although it properly begins with the arrival of Theodoric Rood and the first learned and educational books that he printed, stretches back to the early thirteenth century when scribes, illuminators, and binders of books were already found in Oxford; but it was not until the seventeenth century that, at the initiative of two great men, Archbishop Laud and Bishop Fell, the University Press in its present form was established. It is the dark, dominant figure of John Fell, Dean of Christ Church, and then Bishop of Oxford, who emerges as the real founder of the University Press, and the man who determined the type of books which still preoccupy the Press: learned and educational books, and the Bible." Tiny soiling mark on top of text block, small shallow bump to top of both boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has old tape repairs at top/bottom inside of spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small surface paper loss on front panel, minor soiling.

240 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Beautifully and profusely illustrated with colour photographs. ISBN 0356175375 "John Freeman has spent a year investigating the worlds behind the closed doors of the Capital, unearthing an incredible variety of important interiors. The best and most exciting of these have been brought together in this book, revealing ninety unique views of London, many of which have been photographed here for the first time. The result is the mo s t authoritative and well-researched book on the hidden and unappreciated interiors of London, coveirng not only buildings from all periods of history but sites that represent many of the aspects of London life. Five thematic chapters put each in di vi d ual interior into context, making the book not only a stunning visual and descriptive account of the multifarious worlds inside London, but an important survey of London's architecture and design. The chapters include 'The Grand Scale', a s tud y o f the most opulent and grand interiors, with unusual angles on the well-known - such as the Albert Hall and Old Bailey - as well as impressive but less accessible sites such as the Granada Cinema at Tooting. 'Into the Twentieth Century' rev eals the i nnovative decors - successful or otherwise - of recent years; 'The Decorative Tradition' celebrates the richness of period and contemporary detailing in London; 'Moments Preserved' evokes not only nostalgia but wonders at the perfect pr eserv ation or restoration of a period room or moment in time (with a plea therefore for their further protection). 'Private Lives' explores the personal homes that have been transformed in traditional and eclectic styles by their owners, and als o prov ides g limp ses into private habitats, from the hallowed halls of the Reform Club to a Chelsea houseboat and even a 'taxi driver' eatery." This is a heavy volume which will require additional postage. Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has min or wr inkling at top of spine and rear flap-fold, very minor rubbing. Kodansha, Tokyo, 1977, first English language edition.
150 pp, small 4to (10 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0870112864 Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photographs. "A vital, rich tradition for over eight centuries, Japanese portrait sculpture is an art that has been unjustly ignor ed by the West. This book, the first in a Western language devoted solely to the subject, constitutes a major step in the transition from indifference to appreciation....(it) illuminates the principal characteristics and eccentricities of t h i s a r t , concisely delineating its social setting and historical and stylistic development. An intelligent discussion of individual works completes the picture, allowing the reader to evaluate, for the first time, the range and depth of th is l on g- n eg le ct ed art. Many of the obscurities of Japanese portrait sculpture are derived from its birth and development within the traditions of Buddhist sculpture. The use of statues as objects of worship, the depositing within them of com mem ora tiv e and vo tiv e o bjects, and their placement in 'portrait halls' - all these aspects of the Buddhist background are clarified in this book, giving the reader a full, insightful understanding of Japanese portrait sculpture....Lay scu lptu re d iver ged fr om t he m ains trea m of Buddhist sculpture in the thirteenth century, and though it is more easily understood than Buddhist portraiture, this books' knowlegeable description of its origins and development will greatly facilita te it s app recia tion ." HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS., Kershaw, Ian.
15 Kershaw, Ian. HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS.
W.W. Norton, New York, 1999, book club edition.
845 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "From his birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in this century....In an account drawing on many previously untapped so u r c e s - including Joseph Goebbels's diaries, recently discovered in Moscow - Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a 'drummer' sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of the infamous failed putsch , to t he l e ad ership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing bullies and fanatics whose fusion created the Nazi party - the movement that would enthrall and invigorate a disillusioned people desperate to be rescued from the economic privation of pos tw ar Ger man y. W ith nuanced care, Kershaw assesses the response of ordinary Germans to Hitler the man and to his message of a new dawn for a country hemmed in by old foes, a message shot through with racist fantasies. This volume, the first of tw o, ends wit h t he prom ulgation of the infamous Nuremberg laws that pushed German Jews to the outer fringes of society, and with the march of the German army into the Rhineland - Hitler's first steps toward the abyss of war. Fascinating and d istu rbi ng, r ich w ith ins ight and analysis whose implications remain all too relevant as we near the end of Hitler's century." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 16 Lanken, Dane. MONTREAL MOVIE PALACES: GREAT THEATRES OF THE GOLDEN ERA, 1884-1938.
Archives of Canadian Art / Penumbra Press, Waterloo, Ontario, 1993.
190 pp, oblong 8vo (9" H x 11 3/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921254482 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "There has never been another theatre-building boom like the one occasioned by the explosive success of t he movies in the 1910s and 1920s. In Montreal alone, dozens of new theatres were built, not plain shoeboxes like modern cinemas, but huge and ornate halls with great domes glowing on distant ceilings and dizzying decorative schemes on the w a l l s . T hey were dream palaces, where ordinary people (for the mere price of a ticket) could sit amidst splendour and watch great dramas and romances unreel on the silver screen. This is the story of Montreal's movie palaces, as great and or na te a s an y o n the continent, of the businessmen and architects and craftsmen who built them, the masses who flocked to them, of the glory days they knew in their glamorous reign and the hard times they faced with the rise of TV. Dane Lanken spe nt twe nt y y ea rs st udying Montreal's movie palaces, interviewing the people who were there, searching for rare and previously unpublished archival photographs, and commissioning new views - while the theatres still stood - from leading arch itec tur al p hot ogra phe rs B ria n Merrett and Julie Greto. The result is a comprehensive and richly illustrated social, artistic, architectural and corporate history of an exuberant and little known era in Montreal's history."
