1 Abler, Thomas S., Weaver, Sally M. With Claire C. Veillette and Iris V. Yuzdepski. Case Law Digest prepared by Douglas E. Sanders with Paul C. Taylor. A CANADIAN INDIAN BIBLIOGRAPHY 1960-1970.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1974 0802020925 / 9780802020925 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
732 pp, 9 1/4" H. "This bibliography lists and annotates material published between 1960 and 1970 of interest to the serious student of the Indians and Metis in Canada. A team of researchers worked through books, monographs, journals, theses, unpublished papers and reports, publications by Indians, and federal and provincial government documents to generate over three throusand entries covering a multi-disciplinary range of aspects of current society and culture. Some aspects such as physical anthropology, biomedicine, archaeology, and linguistics had to be excluded, however. Both English- and French-language sources were covered. The entries are arranged by topic or tribe, and there is an index to assist in cross-reference or finer selection. Of special note is the Case Law Digest, which describes briefly the facts and decisions of all significant legal cases involving Indians since 1867. The systematic exposition of these decisions should help increase understanding of the legal situation in which Indians now live." Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light soiling at top of spine, minor rubbing.

H.M.C.S. Iroquois Veterans Association, Victoria, B.C., 1993, reprint.
256 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover with cerlox binding. This is the reprint edition which was produced by photocopy with permission of the author. Unfortunately the photographs did not reproduce well. "Practically everyone knows of HMS Cossack's mag nificent exploit in a Norwegian fiord in February 1940 when her crew rescued 299 captive British merchant seamen from the Altmark. Cossack was just one of 27 Tribal Class destroyers which served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian an d C a n a d i an Navies from 1938 to 1969. They were considered by many to be the finest of their type. The Tribals probably saw more acion over a longer period of time, and over a greater area of the globe, than any other class of destroyer. Th ey to ok p ar t in almost every Home Fleet and Mediterranean action, the D-Day operations, the East Indies, the South-West Pacific amphibious landings, the Battle for Leyte Gulf, the surrender of Japan and the Korean War. Technical details are p rov i ded , t oge the r wit h lists of commanding officers and pennant numbers, and the ship's crests." Interior - clean with no previous ownership marks. UNLUCKY LADY: THE LIFE & DEATH OF HMCS ATHABASKAN, 1940-44., Burrow, Len and Beaudoin, Emile.
3 Burrow, Len and Beaudoin, Emile. UNLUCKY LADY: THE LIFE & DEATH OF HMCS ATHABASKAN, 1940-44.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1989 0771018126 / 9780771018121 Reprint. Hard Cover Very Good Good+
198 pp, oblong 8vo, (8 3/4" H x 11 1/2" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps and colour reproductions - wonderful pictorial end papers of Athabaskan at speed. "The Athabaskan was the second of the Canadian Tribal Class Destroyers, sister ship to the Haida. The story of Athabaskan's life and death has been lovingly retrieved from forgotten archives and her daily log. In her short life she was pounded by the sea and battered by bombs, gunfire, and torpedoes. She spent her finest and final hours fighting alongside her sisters in the 10th Flotilla in 1944, helping to clear the English Channel of enemy ships prior to the invasion. 'Unlucky Lady' is a memorial - to a ship, to the men who served her, and to Canadians who served at sea more than forty years ago." Book is slightly cocked, has small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, small tears at top of flap-folds - archivally taped; 4" repaired tear with creases, wrinkles and some delamination at bottom of front panel, 1" tear archivally taped at bottom of front flap-fold, very light rubbing and a few tiny dints on front panel.

HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING., Gough, Barry M.
4 Gough, Barry M. HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING.
St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 2001 1551250586 / 9781551250588 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Grant Macdonald.
255 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions of artwork by Grant Macdonald and others, maps/battle plans, colour plates. " 'HMCS Haida's story is an account of sharp-end war; of Canada's naval experience in Murmansk convoys and British Home Fleet protection; in English Channel operations, when Canadian and British naval units swept the German naval ensign from the seas; in the destruction of a U-boat, and in the liberation of Trondheim, Norway. Haida was always in on the action. She sank more enemy military tonnage than any other Canadian vessel. Haida's finest days were during the intense naval operations leading up to D-Day, when, with her sisters Huron and Iroquois and the ill-fated Athabaskan, with British and Polish men of war, she engaged German destroyers, torpedo boats, minesweepers and others - and never lost. She vigorously carried the war to the enemy at great risk. Her postwar career including two tours in the Korean theatre displays the same brave purpose in her officers and men, trained professionals and dedicated sailors. Barry Gough has written a new chapter in Canadian naval annals, showing that the best equipment brings forth the best results when good fortune and superb seamanship and weapons handling are matched in equal measure - Haida's illustrious story." Very minor edge wear at bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.

SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH., Komaroff, Katherine.
5 Komaroff, Katherine. SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH.
New York Universe Books 1974 0876631871 / 9780876631874 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
86 pp, 11 5/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "Ever since the beginning of time, man has wondered about the meaning and behavior of the sun and moon. He has carefully observed their cycles and realized their importance for his own survival. The close contact with nature that ancient man enjoyed made him more conscious of their presence, whether he lived in a place constantly warmed by the sun or in a bitter cold world where the sun seemed far away. Ancient men tried to explain the meaning of this mysterious phenomenon in stories closely related to their own lives and religious beliefs. The Hindu people of India thought that the sun was a red man with four arms in a golden chariot. For the Egyptians, the sun was a great watchful eye. The North American Indians said that the moon was a great ball of light tossed into the sky by a clever creature called Raven. The Eskimos believed that the moon was a powerful hunter who often stood in front of his igloo. These stories, called myths, are handed down from generation to generation, and celebrate the great mystery of life. They are loved because of their beauty and power and also for what they tell us about people of other cultures. In 'Sky Gods', myths from India, Egypt, Africa, Japan, China, the Eskimos, and the Indians of North and South America are lucidly retold and illustrated with stunning photographs of art and artifacts from the various cultures. There is a common message behind all these stories. Although the masks, paintings, statues, and other works of art also vary - some are relatively simple, others are highly sophisticated - yet they all contain clues to a deeper understanding of the beauty and mysteriousness of the universe." Two large diagonal creases on free rear endpaper, light stain along bottom edge of rear board, very small light stain on top edge of front board, one soft corner crease. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing and two light scuff lines on rear panel, small stain at inside bottom edge of rear panel, one small edge tear.

Toronto Samuel Stevens, Hakkert, 1975 0888665660 / 9780888665669 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
116 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Canada provided the third largest allied navy in the Second World War. The Royal Canadian Navy, born amidst controversy over its very existence just before the First World War grew from small beginnings with the acquisition of the cruisers Rainbow and Niobe to radical expansion in the 1940's to fight the battle of the Atlantic. The RCN has always been a wartime service: its first submarines were bought, not by Ottawa, but by British Columbia, in the tumultuous days immediately preceding the outbreak of war in 1914. Its last aircraft carrier, the Bonaventure, left commission despite a costly refit as the tensions of the Cold War receded. (This) is the story of the ships of the RCN giving a brief history of their active service and presenting a visual account of Canada's Navy in dramatic pictures of Canada's own ships." Slight browning in margins of pages, light browning to edges of text block, light waviness to top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear, light rubbing to surfaces, a few small soft creases at edges.

248 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Between July 1950 and August 1955, when the last Royal Canadian Navy ship returned home from Korea, a total of eight Canadian destroyers performed twenty-one single tours of duty manned by more than 6,000 sailors. In recounting the efforts of the many who served in those almost forgotten ships, (the author) depicts a navy at mid-century, determined to assert its distinct Canadian identity. His is an account of a war viewed from the vantage point of the lower deck; of one whose own experiences and those of his shipmates are testimony to the fact that those who served with the RCN in Korea acquitted themselves admirably and in a manner that has long deserved the recognition and respect of all Canadians."

HUDSON'S BAY TO HARO STRAIT: BOOKS ON WESTERN CANADA AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. A COLLECTORS' GUIDE., Whale, G.J. Kim.
11 Whale, G.J. Kim. HUDSON'S BAY TO HARO STRAIT: BOOKS ON WESTERN CANADA AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. A COLLECTORS' GUIDE.
Victoria, British Columbia Rockland Books 1998 0968326005 / 9780968326008 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Signed by Author
316 pp + Index, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). No. 186 of the first edition of 500 copies. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. "(T)he boundaries of the guide are reasonably flexible. If a book contains significant Western or Western Arctic material, it will be included. The geographic reach embraces all the past and present territory of Western and Arctic Canada, all that was once Rupert's Land as well as those areas where histories have intermingled. For example, the great gold rushes of Alaska and the Klondike are strongly linked, and that's reflected in the accounts dealing with those events. I don't think I've missed many of the West's important books, but allow me the occasional oversight. The listings of the books have been made as clear and simple as possible, with a minimum of bibliographic description; enough ony to provide a sense of the size, shape and format of the book and a rough guide to the contents. The physical description is as extensive as needs be to identify the first or most desired edition or, in a lot of cases, the best edited; occasionally all three." From the Introduction.

12 Woodcock, George. A PICTURE HISTORY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA.
Edmonton Hurtig 1980 0888301855 / 9780888301857 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
240 pp, 11 1/4" H. "With almost four hundred (b&w) illustrations - which include paintings, drawings, maps, and original documents as well as a splendid section of fascinating photographs - the story of British Columbia is presented here in all its exciting contrast. In telling the story of Canada's western-most province, George Woodcock has vividly caught its unique character. (He) presents the varied personalities who shaped the province: Canadian fur traders and British naval captains; genteel citizens of nineteenth-century Victoria and brawling miners in Barkerville; high-minded missionaries and hard-living railroad builders; land speculators, farmers, politicians, journalists, industrialists, and of course the original inhabitants, the Coast Indians with their rich cultural traditions. (This book) spans the whole range from the age of the dinosaurs to the politics of the 1980s, and it includes (many) fascinating details. History comes alive as, picture by picture, Woodcock traces the development of a small settlement on Vancouver Island into the thriving province we know today." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing with a few tiny scuffs on rear panel.
