They joined a multi-national expeditionary force that quickly found itself embroiled in a full-scale war. Members of the Canadian navy, airforce and infantry fought with distinction and endured months of bloody stalemate that ultimately stopped the Communists but failed to reunite the people of the Korean peninsula - with consequences that continue to haunt the world today. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
3 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

"The Athabaskan was the second of the Canadian Tribal Class Destroyers, sister ship to the Haida. The story of Athabaskan's life and death has been lovingly retrieved from forgotten archives and her daily log. In her short life she was pounded by the sea and battered by bombs, gunfire, and torpedoes. She spent her finest and final hours fighting alongside her sisters in the 10th Flotilla in 1944, helping to clear the English Channel of enemy ships prior to the invasion. 'Unlucky Lady' is a memorial - to a ship, to the men who served her, and to Canadians who served at sea more than forty years ago." Book is slightly cocked, has small bump at top corner of boards. The formal leadership of any organization must always ensure that it minimizes the divergence between institu tional aims and the actions of informal leaders. When this separation occurs, the result is sometimes mutiny. These incidents of insubordination and noncompliance represent a form of dialogue between military personnel and their leadership. DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS., Edwards, Bernard.
6 Edwards, Bernard. DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199275 / 9781860199271 Reprint. Hard Cover Very Good+ Near Fine
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The U-boat, the submarine of the German Navy, was a hidden predator, which would steal up on its prey out of sight beneath the waves. The tactics were much like the wild wolf of the forest, whose grey camouflage would keep it out of sight until it chose to attack. Just as the wolf was even more effective when it roamed in groups, cornering its quarry before catching it, so Admiral Karl Donitz chose to use the grey hulls of his submarines in packs - 'wolf packs'. This simple yet stunningly successful tactic came very close to winning the Battle of the Atlantic and inflicted huge losses of Allied merchant and naval vessels and their crews. With the packs dispersing after an attack as quickly as they had gathered for it, defence against the strategy was fraught with difficulty and only the U-boats' inability to wage their warfare without surfacing gave the Allies a chance of fighting back. In this empathetic and deeply researched volume, (the author) delves beneath the myths and legends of submarinal action and convoy protection to discuss the realities of wolf pack deployment. He explains what caused Donitz to employ the plan and how close his scheme came to destroying Allied resistance. It is an account of a remarkable naval tactic, cunningly used with great brutality by men who themselves withstood awesome deprivation, securing the adulation of their nation." Edge crease at top corner of last two pages, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR., Essex, James W.
7 Essex, James W. VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR.
Erin, Ontario Boston Mills Press 1984 0919822568 / 9780919822566 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers (showing locations of ships torpedoed in Gulf and River of St. Lawrence and Canada's Coastal Waters), b&w photographs, drawings. "The sailor next to me reached into his topcoat pocket and hurriedly proferred a crumpled photograph. I recognized it as the military funeral of 1942 at the tiny Anglican Church just down the road. It was the burial of a seaman from the HMCS 'Charlottetown', one of several who had been rescued, only to die of wounds later. He was killed in Canada by the Nazis. This book in a real sense, then, is his story and the story of hundreds of others who perished because of the German U-boats in the St. Lawrence. As Cmdr. George Bernard, Naval Officer in Command, Gaspe from 1943 to the war's end said in later years: 'In 1942, marauding U-Boats entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and did a great deal of damage. They roamed the Gulf and River St. Lawrence at will and were seldom opposed. They sank Canadian warships and valuable merchant vessels almost with impunity.' According to Bernard, it was for this reason that Canadian authorities played down the episode. They were prepared to accept the consequences because warships which might have attacked the U-boats invading our inland waters were wanted more urgently elsewhere. This was 'Victory in the St. Lawrence' - initially for the German U-boat: Canada's turn would come next. But what happened to both remained locked in the memories of the participants only now being revealed long years after the war ended. This was 'Canada's Unknown War'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

8 Goodwin, James. Forewords by Michael Bliss and Tony German. "OUR GALLANT DOCTOR". ENIGMA AND TRAGEDY: SURGEON LIEUTENANT GEORGE HENDRY AND HMCS OTTAWA, 1942.
Dundurn, Toronto, 2007, first edition.
280 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781550026870 B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, map. "During the Battle of the Atlantic, Dr. George Hendry had just finished performing two major surgical operations on board t he destroyer HMCS Ottawa when his ship was ambushed by 13 German U-boats. Canadian warships like Ottawa had inadequate radar sets that were incapable of detecting submarines approaching in the dark. On September 13, 1942, U-91 stole in and t o r p e d o ed Ottawa, sinking her in 20 minutes. Utterly exhausted, Dr. Hendry was lost along with 113 of his shipmates. George Hendry was a much-loved man, a great university athlete, and a very good doctor. Unfortunately, he was also naive and t oo t ru st in g. One night in January 1941, he committed a very foolish indiscretion. He would spend the rest of his tragically short life making amends for this mistake." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING., Gough, Barry M.
9 Gough, Barry M. HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING.
St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 2001 1551250586 / 9781551250588 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Grant Macdonald.
255 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions of artwork by Grant Macdonald and others, maps/battle plans, colour plates. " 'HMCS Haida's story is an account of sharp-end war; of Canada's naval experience in Murmansk convoys and British Home Fleet protection; in English Channel operations, when Canadian and British naval units swept the German naval ensign from the seas; in the destruction of a U-boat, and in the liberation of Trondheim, Norway. Haida was always in on the action. She sank more enemy military tonnage than any other Canadian vessel. Haida's finest days were during the intense naval operations leading up to D-Day, when, with her sisters Huron and Iroquois and the ill-fated Athabaskan, with British and Polish men of war, she engaged German destroyers, torpedo boats, minesweepers and others - and never lost. She vigorously carried the war to the enemy at great risk. Her postwar career including two tours in the Korean theatre displays the same brave purpose in her officers and men, trained professionals and dedicated sailors. Barry Gough has written a new chapter in Canadian naval annals, showing that the best equipment brings forth the best results when good fortune and superb seamanship and weapons handling are matched in equal measure - Haida's illustrious story." Very minor edge wear at bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.

Robin Brass Studio, Toronto, 2000, reprint.
312 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 9" D), soft cover. ISBN 1896941141 B&w drawings by the author/artist. "As a boy growing up on the Prairies in the Depression, (the author) dreamed of going to sea, became a sea cadet at HMS Undaunted in Calgary, and in 1938 joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an officer cadet, training with the Royal Navy in Britain until 1941. His wartime service began on HMS Renown in the South Atlantic, searching for the Graf Spee, and off Norway engaging the battleships Scharnh orst and Gneisenau. He lost all his possessions when Renown was damaged by shellfire. He served on HMS Matabele and HMS Hood, leaving that ship weeks before she was sunk with all hands in battle with the Bismarck. Returning to Canada in la t e 1 9 4 1 , he was appointed to HMCS Ottawa, a destroyer on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic. A year later she was sunk with great loss of life in a battle with German submarines. Jenson was among the lucky ones plucked from the Atlant ic b y a B ri ti sh corvette. He joined HMCS Niagara as executive officer, and in late 1943 briefly commanded the corvette Long Branch before going on to the destroyer Algonquin as executive officer, taking part in raids on German ships, includi ng the T irp itz , a nd being one of the ships to open fire on the shore defences in the invasion of Normandy. Algonquin completed the war raiding German shipping and escorting Allied convoys to Murmansk. The book is illustrated with L.B. Jenson' s l umin ous lin e dr awin gs, as well as sketches and diagrams illustrating uniforms, insignia and so on. His book is a valuable record not only of how ships fought the battles of the Atlantic, but of life on board, where men had to live under d iffi cult cond ition s for week s on end - all seen through the eyes of an energetic and engaging young officer." 190 pp, oblong 8vo (8 5/8" H x 10 5/8" D). B&w photographss, drawings. "HMCS Swansea is the story of a ship. Just one of Canada's several hundred warships. It is also the story of the men who served in her, and of other ships who operated with her, in war time in EG-9, and in peacetime in her various training roles. It is a representative tale that could have been told, and has been, of any one of a hundred similar ships of the Royal Canadian Navy. So why this particular ship? Because HMCS Swansea is typical, yet atypical. Typical in that she participated in the Battle of the Atlantic in the same way as her sister frigates; atypical in that she was involved in the destruction of four U-boats, more than any other RCN ship. And it was in this role of hunter-killer that she was absolutely the best." Book is slightly cocked, has light soiling on bottom edge of boards, faint erased pencil marks at top corner of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor wrinkling at top of spine, slight fading to spine colour, very small scuff mark (no colour loss) on front panel.
