1 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE., Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas.
3 Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas. OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1973.
489 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. "These three works, displaying marked differences in purpose, tone, and effect, are all classics of Canadian literary and cultural criticism. John George Bourinot was a man of letters, an Imperialist, and a bic ulturalist, who was confident of his knowledge of the Canadian identity and felt it to be his public mission to align reality with his own personal vision. Writing in 1893 to the elite represented by the members of the Royal Society, he d e s c r i b e d h is work as 'a monograph on the intellectual development of the Dominion', describing 'the progress of culture in a country still struggling with the difficulties of the material development of half a continent'. Two decades later , Th om as G ut hr ie Ma rquis and Camille Roy wrote what were, in contrast, specialized assignments, contributions to the compendium history, 'Canada and Its Provinces' (1913). Addressing a far larger audience, and treating a vastly enlarged bod y of Can adi an lit era tur e , t heir work comes much closer to contemporary scholarship, with greater clarity, organization, and sheer bulk of information, but with the loss of some of the charm and assurance of Bourinot's wide sweep. In further co ntr ast to B our inot 's d eter mi ned biculturalism and will to unity, Roy and Marquis' essays display vivid differences in the emotional allegiances and convictions of the founding cultures. Marquis starts by asking the question, 'Has Canada a vo ice of h er ow n in lite ratur e dis tin ct f rom that of England?'; Roy treats French-Canadian literature in its Roman Catholic contexts." LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS., Brown, Jane.
5 Brown, Jane. LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS.
London Viking 1996 0670858714 / 9780670858712 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). "The great architect and his architecture are well known, but what about his patrons, his clients? Who were they? Why did they build? What did they pay for their buildings? From his earliest patrons, a stream of repressed gentlewomen of intelligence and means, through a galaxy of Edwardian heroes and villains, this book tells their stories. Some of them are famous, others unknown, except as Lutyen's clients: here are Herbert Jekyll, Jennie Churchill, J.M. Barrie, Hugh Lane, Victoria Sackville, lords, ladies, Souls, bankers, press barons, politicians, the beau monde of Edwardian England, as well as a schoolteacher who inherited a fortune and a prospering Bradford wool merchant. The complex networking of families and friends threads through the events and settings of Edwardian society, like a richly patterned embroidery. Everything of significance that Lutyens did had its roots in the Edwardian decade - and his clients turn out to be both the triumph and the tragedy of his career. (L)avishly illustrated with the human face of great architecture - sketches, drawings and photographs from family archives all over England." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, slight browning to spine, edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

7 Freiman, Lawrence. DON'T FALL OFF THE ROCKING HORSE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1978 0771031815 / 9780771031816 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good Signed by Author
199 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page (signature only). "Lawrence Freiman's reminiscences encompass the world of his grandfather - a Canadian adventurer who fought in the American Civil War - and focus on the span of his own life, including his childhood in Ottawa, his formative years, his involvement in education, the arts and social legislation, in Zionism, and in Freiman's, the family retailing business, which he expanded into a large and successful company. Here is a person who has made it as few have, and, in the course of making it, he has not only led a rich, varied and exciting life, but has also contributed much to Canadian society. His story is one of ups and downs, of risks, losses and victories, of the growth of a family and the progress of Zionism, of Canada and her capital, of the gradual shifts of time, of the rocking horse motion of life and the excitement of not falling off." Toronto Oxford University Press 1997 0195411951 / 9780195411959 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
362 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "(G)limpses the world of actors as experienced by Canadian performers. In their own words, more than two hundred actors share shocking, funny, terrifying, sometimes poignant stories of adventures, mishaps, gaffes, disasters, and moments of joy they have known in the course of their working lives on and off stage. The collection of over 450 stories begins with tales of 'The Audition' and early performing experiences of some familiers faces, such as Wayne and Schuster, William Shatner, Robert Goulet, and Martin Short. It chronicles life on tour from Russia to the Ozarks to above the Arctic circle. It elucidates the trials of props, sets, and wardrobe that refuse to function as intended, the agonies of surviving the unexpected, whether it be a four-legged cast member going into labour, an actor who has somehow forgotten an entrance, a sudden on-stage bout with very real food poisoning, or the often hilarious contributions from members of the audience." Robert Hale, London, 1978, reprint.
160 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0709167334 "These are the stories of the young men who flew the Spitfires of World War II. Written in spare moments between missions, they are first-hand accounts telling of the mingled fear and exhilaration of the dog-fight, the strain of waiting and the sudden frenzy of action at the 'scramble' signal; accounts full of audacity and innocence, courage and wry humour. The writers were not famous heroes, there were thousands l i k e t h e m with similar tales to tell. But these are the stories of Matthew, Derek and the rest of the men of Buster Squadron. The editor has appended to each story a short indication of the sort of man each pilot was: his background, his look s, h is te mp er am e nt, and in far too many cases his fate. But the men speak for themselves, and vividly recreate Britain's finest hour." Cigarette odor, minor edge wear to boards, book is lsightly cocked. ALEC GUINNESS: MASTER OF DISGUISE., O'Connor, Garry. (Alec Guinness.)
19 O'Connor, Garry. (Alec Guinness.) ALEC GUINNESS: MASTER OF DISGUISE.
London Hodder and Stoughton 1994 0340485620 / 9780340485620 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
316 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "Sir Alec Guinness's performances in films such as 'Oliver Twist', 'Kind Hearts and Coronets', and 'The Bridge on the River Kwai', as well as in countless plays in the Theatre and on television, have ensured his position as one of the greatest actors of the post-war era. He seems able not so much to portray the characters he plays as to become them. But the gift is deceptive. How can he really be all the different people he has played? How does he do it? (This book) delves into the actor's complex, enigmatic personality and into the nature of his remarkable talent. (O'Connor) probes the formative spiritual and emotional events in his life - his illegitimacy, his unanchored childhood, and his conversion to Roman Catholicism. Drawing on interviews with scores of friends and colleagues, (he) traces Guinness's acting roots and, closely relating the man to the roles he has created, renders the drama of his development. With portraits of notable figures in Guinness's life including John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, David Lean, Tyrone Guthrie, George Lucas, T.S. Eliot, John le Carre and Alan Bennett, O'Connor recreates a remarkably diverse, long and distinguished career. His penetrating analysis is one which celebrates, and preserves, the integrity of the actor and the man." Very light browning to edges of text block, small light mark on top of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has minor rubbing and very light edge wrinkling.

20 Oliver, Peter. G. HOWARD FERGUSON: ONTARIO TORY.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802033466 / 9780802033468 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Inscribed By Author
501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on free front endpaper, minor glue residue on endpapers, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light edge browning, one very small tear archivally taped some rubbing with color loss at bottom of spine.
