1 Benn, Carl; Bryant, Giles; Cooke, William; Friesen, Paul H.; Hayes, Alan; McIntire, C. Thomas; Morris, Shirley. THE PARISH AND CATHEDRAL OF ST JAMES', TORONTO, 1797-1997: A COLLABORATIVE HISTORY.
St James' Cathedral / Toronto University Press, Toronto, 1998.
326 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802047149 B&w and colour photographs, b&w drawings, plans, elevations. "St James' Cathedral can justly be called the Mother Church of the city of Toronto as well as of the Anglican diocese centred there. Its congregation perpetuates one that began worshipping in Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe's tent at the very founding of the town of York in 1793. Its grounds were set aside for a place of worship in 1797, and the wooden church tha t o p ened there ten years later was the first to be built in the town. Four successive Anglican churches have stood on this site, which is now in the heart of downtown Toronto. This history, commissioned as part of St James' 200th-anniversary ce le b ra ti ons in 1996-7, represents a collaboration by seven respected amateur and professional historians. It is lavishly illustrated with over one hundred pictures from the cathedral's own archives and the holdings of other institutions, as well as e igh t p ages of specially commissioned colour plates. Alongside a general history of the church as both parish and cathedral and its ministry to the community through two centuries, there are chapters specially treating the architecture of t he s ucc essi ve b uildings and the development of St James' renowned music and liturgy. This book will appeal not only to students of religious, cultural, and architectural history but to all who take an interest in Toronto's heritage, and Canada' s." 3 Broome, Jack, Captain. SERVICES WRENDERED.
London William Kimber 1974 0718303733 / 9780718303730 Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 8 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with cartoons in black, white, blue and red. "Records of World War II are incomplete without a tribute to the 'Fighting Services Title-Abbreviating Department', and the inspired minds therein which christened the Women's Royal Naval Service the WRENS. Surely the dedicated brood - such invaluable handmaidens to Britannia in her wave-ruling activities - owes something to such a delightful title. Captain Jack Broome also feels indebted to the Department for enabling him to call his gay, witty book of illustrated verses about these fledglings 'Services Wrendered'. In their many roles, in dockyards, on parade grounds, driving cars, teleprinters, or motor-boats with such enthusiasm and apparent awe for naval tradition, gold braid and authority, there remained that beautifully balanced, built-in, not-so-subservient subservience." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper and on title page, slight colour fading to top edge of boards and bottom edge of spine, minor wrinkles at top of spine. Dust jacket has slight browning at edges, minor edgewear/rubbing.

282 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group, and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he communicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history, conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Book is Fine. BRITISH MOTORCYCLES SINCE 1900., Collins, Paul.
6 Collins, Paul. BRITISH MOTORCYCLES SINCE 1900.
Shepperton Ian Allan 1998 0711024901 / 9780711024908 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "For biking enthusiasts worldwide the names of the great British manufacturers trip off the tongue - BSA, Triumph, Norton, Rudge, Ariel, Greeves, Velocette, Vincent and many more; names that are redolent of the era when British bikes dominated motor sport. Such was the impact of the postwar Japanese competition, however, that the British motorcycle industry all but died. There have been occasional green shoots of recovery, but these were often ill-funded and doomed to eventual failure. But, like many other industries in Britain, rumours of the final death of the industry have been greatly exaggerated and, as we approach the centenary of the motor industry, there are grounds for optimism that from the ashes of earlier failures a new motorcycle industry is emerging. In (this book), the latest in the highly successful 'Ian Allan Transport Library' series, Paul Collins examines the history of each of the various manufacturers that gave Britain its pre-eminence. The book is illustrated thoughout with a superb selection of photographs that recall the glory years. With its comprehensive A-Z coverage, (it) provides readers with a concise and readable account of one of the great British industries; an industry that has given employment and pleasure to thousands." Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor soiling, minor rubbing.

177 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, map. "Lucille Teasdale was determined to become a doctor and help children in need. She entered medical school in 1950 and was one of the first women in Quebec to receive a diploma as a surgeon. In 1961, she married an Italian doctor, Piero Conti, and went to northern Uganda with him. There, they established St. Mary's-Lacor Hospital. For over 35 years, they treated people with contagious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS. They continually expanded the services of the hospital and trained Ugandans to staff it. Dr. Lucille performed thousands of operations under extremely difficult conditions. When civil war broke out in Uganda in the early 1970s, she was forced to become a war surgeon. Even though repeated rebel attacks on the hospital put their lives in constant peril, the couple stayed on to help the people who depended on them for medical care. Before the world knew about HIV, Dr. Lucille contracted the virus when sharp bone fragments penetrated her rubber gloves in the course of performing an operation on a wounded soldier. She took precautions but contined to work for another ten years to save lives and raise funds for the hospital. She spoke out boldly on HIV/AIDS and became an inspiring example to people living with the disease. She died of AIDS in 1996 and is buried in Uganda, on the grounds of Lacor Hospital." Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Western Producer Prairie Books 1982 0888330901 / 9780888330901 Very Good Very Good-
177 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Saskatoon began as a vision of the Temperance Colonization Society. Its members formulated a scheme for a colony in the West where a way of life free from the evils of alcohol might be fostered. Early in the spring of 1882, an advance party travelled by rail and wagon to examine their grant of land and to choose the administrative site for the settlement. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the temperance ideals had become secondary to boosterism. By 1905 discussions were underway to amalgamate the original Nutana settlement with 'Saskatoon' and Riversdale on the west side of the river. Their combined population of 4,500 allowed Saskatoon a charter under city status in 1906. By 1908 the city was served by three railway companies and the 'Hub City' station was one of the busiest in the West. (This book) brings the story of the city to life through nearly 300 photographs. It registers changes through two world wars, during the periods of prosperity and recession, into the optimism of the fifties and sixties and the more speculative expansion of the seventies." Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine ans flap-folds, light rubbing including faint scratches, 2" edge tear with old tape on inside, two tiny edge tears.

BRITISH BUTCHERS AND BUNGLERS OF WORLD WAR ONE., Laffin, John.

Godalming Bramley 1998 1841000124 / 9781841000121 Reprint Very Good Very Good
214 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "(A) forceful and probing analysis of the British generals' leadership. For too long, Dr John Laffin maintains, the military reputation of the generals has not been critically enough examined, and he asks how those responsible for such catastrophic defeats were able to retain their commands. Haig, whose army suffered 60,000 casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, was still in command after five months more fighting and another 400,000 casualties. By the war's end the number of dead ran into millions - doggedly brave British Empire soldiers who, Dr Laffin believes, were killed, wounded or broken by commanders who were vain, egocentric or incompetent. But the generals, who blamed the dead and junior in rank, cannot be excused on the grounds that there was 'nothing else that they could do'. Een now, seventy years after that 'Great War for Civilization', this book raises questions that are uncomfortable. Dr Laffin draws on the memories and writings of those who took part and quotes the judgements of other military historians to provide a lucid analysis of just what went wrong in the generals' leadership and how it resulted in such appalling and tragic losses - and concludes that they were not merely incompetent but uncaring. Controversial and uncompromising, this intelligent and important book is an invaluable addition to the history of World War I and will be read by all interested in this period of history and its influence on succeeding military campaigns." Small bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of flap-folds.

Athens, Ohio Ohio University Press 1985 0821408046 / 9780821408049 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
195 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "This first critical study of major contemporary Chinese poets in English treats the work of Chi Hsien, Cheng Ch'ou-yu, Chou Meng-tieh, Lomen, Yungtzu, Ya Hsien, Yip Wai-lim , Wu Sheng, and Yu Kuang-chung. Ranging from the classically inspired to the highly experimental, their works represent some of the most important poetry written in the post-1949 period in China. Professor Lin grounds her study in the scrutiny of many individual poems and illustrates her discussion with fresh translations of modern poems throughout. Her comments on specific poets and poems are succinct and perceptive and should be of great value to students, specialists, and general readers. The selected bibliography lists both English and Chinese sources." Previous owner's chop (stamp) on free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Boston Atlantic Monthly Press 1985 0871130076 / 9780871130075 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
304 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Georges Bank, 20,000 square miles of turbulent shoal water off Nantucket, is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, its depths populated by cod, haddock, flatfish, and scallops. Until recently it was a gathering place for immense fishing trawlers of all nations. Then the Bank also became a bone of contention for explorers in oil, pitting the great multinational companies against one another, to say nothing of federal and state governments, jostling for their share of offshore oil revenues. Georges has long been the subject of dispute between the United States and Canada, and in the fall of 1984 the International Court of Justice in the Hague awarded a large portion of the Bank to Canada. Oil-lease sales were scheduled - and cancelled. Fishermen protested to their political representatives, who protested to their governments. Over the storm-lashed and fecund waters of Georges Bank, William MacLeish has travelled many times - by trawler, by helicopter, by scientific research vessel, by airplane, and by scallop boat. His pages bring us the scientists, the fishing people, politicians, lawyers, and oilmen connected with Georges Bank." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small light scuff marks, light soiling/rubbing on rear panel.

"One of Canada's first scientific explorers, Joseph Burr Tyrrell began his career in the late nineteenth century by surveying the Rocky Mountains on foot and mapping remote northern regions from a birchbark canoe; he ended it at the dawn of the Atomic Age, flying across the wilderness in bush planes. Among his many accomplishments, Tyrrell discovered Canada's first dinosaur, Albertosaurus, and an Ice Age glacier he named Keewatin. He risked his own and his companions' lives charting the Dubawnt and Kazan river networks west of Hudson Bay, and rescued the maps and records of Canada's great geographer, David Thompson, from oblivion. After he failed to find gold in the Klondike, Tyrrell gambled on buying a gold mine in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and won millions." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
