40 pp, 9 1/2" H. Green patterned endpapers, colour and b&w illustrations, musical notation. "Based on a favorite nursery legend, 'Haensel and Gretel' with its delightfully refreshing, heart-gladdening music, is one of the most popular and best-loved of all operas. All the charm of simple wonder surrounds this tale of two children lost in the woods who come upon a little house whose walls and roof are made of cake and sweets and whose fence is made of gingerbread. Alas, the house is owned by a wicked witch who tries to bake Haensel in a large oven. The tale is delightfully told with simple text and colorful pictures and many of the lovely musical themes are included."
