SWEET MONEY GIRL. GOLD MEDAL ORIGINAL S642., Appel, Benjamin.
1 Appel, Benjamin. SWEET MONEY GIRL. GOLD MEDAL ORIGINAL S642.
Fawcett, Greenwich, Conn., c1954.
206 pp, mass market paperback. "....a novel of New York crammed with the sights and sounds and colors of the main stem, a lyric tribute to garish Manhattan. In 'Sweet Money Girl', Bejamin Appel, acknowledged peer of Hemingway, Steinbeck and Cain, tells - with the strident power of the city itself - the story of Miss Broadway, on the prowl for the big money, and willing to pay for it on any man's terms. Now, on her return by popular demand, meet Hortense, the kind of girl who came alive only in the night, when all the neons were shining and all the pretty moths were fluttering. Meet Hortense, the miner's daughter, the Cinderella in a lonely bedroom, who searched for the city of enchantment - and found only a wilderness of con c r e t e . " Interior - light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
2 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Greenwich Editions, London, 1995.
80 pp, oblong 8vo (8 7/16" H x 10 1/2" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0862880505 Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions, b&w drawings. "Admirers of Don Breckon's unerring blend of a faultless eye for detail and an irresistible nosta lgia for the era of steam will need no prompting to acquire and treasure this beautifully produced book. It is all here: the shapely majesty of the locomotives (with the emphasis on the Great Western, but with all the Big Four well repres e n t e d ) , s e t in landscapes of a 'classical Constable calmness'; the stations, accurate in every evocative period detail; the hidden rituals of the engine shed; the porters, signalmen and passengers who were privileged to play their part in t hi s gl or io us p a no ra ma. The artist himself has provided the commentary, and Roger Malone has written an introduction full of delightful revelations of the life and work of a painter who, he says, 'reminds us of what we are missing in a worl d t ha t h as dis mis sed c har act er and individuality in favour of streamlined efficiency'." MILLAY IN GREENWICH VILLAGE., Cheney, Anne.
5 Cheney, Anne. MILLAY IN GREENWICH VILLAGE.
University of Alabama Press, Alabama, 1975.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0817371613 B&w illustrations. "It was Millay who captured in verse the freedom, spontaneity, quick wit, and beauty of the pre-1920s as no other poet did. She was a living symbol of the 'new woman' who could live, think, and love as freely as they chose. (This) is a psychological portrait of Millay in her finest years, the ones after she had freed herself of the repression of her childhood and youth and before she accepted th e b o n d s o f a stifling marriage. The four most important influences on Millay's life and art - Floyd Dell, Edmund Wilson, Arthur Davison Ficke, and Eugen Boissevain - are discussed at length in individual chapters. A separate chapter deals b ri e fl y wi th h e r less significant relationships. Dr. Cheney's fascinating study reveals that Millay's concern with and involvement in anti-war protests, women's rights, social injustice, lesbianism, and individual freedom make her not only a rep re sen ta tiv e w oma n of her own time, but very much a woman for our time, too." Faint cigarette odor, minor browning to pages, light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very light browning to fore -edg e a nd t op of t extb lock . ENGLISH COURT LIFE, FROM HENRY VII TO GEORGE II., Dutton, Ralph.
6 Dutton, Ralph. ENGLISH COURT LIFE, FROM HENRY VII TO GEORGE II.
London B.T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Very Good Very Good+
232 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The atmosphere of a Court is enclosed and artificial. The monarch has in the past enjoyed a wide degree of power without a corresponding sense of obligation or responsibility; and for the courtiers, whose position depended on their agreeableness, flattery has always been at a premium just as frankness has been inhibited. How do men and women react in circumstances where normal standards of behaviour are inapplicable? This is the question which, by implication, Ralph Dutton answers in this book. Since his survey covers the three centuries from Henry VII to George VII it is natural that, in so many different courts and under the reign of so various a series of kings and queens, Court Life should appear in most of its possible forms. But in the moral forcing house of the Court a constant element, from 1485 to 1760, has been the tendency for personal virtues and defects of character to become exaggerated to an extent seldom met with in the prosaic outside world. As to the Courts themselves: the Coronations, Drawing-rooms, Progresses, Births and Funerals; the favourites, mistresses and politicians, and the palaces in which they met, intrigued and lived: as to all these, they provide Mr. Dutton with a rich topic on which to exercise his accustomed gifts for description, quotation and deprecatory comment." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge and corner wear, bump at top corner of front board - migrates as a small bump at top corner of pages up to approx. page 40, small store label at bottom of front pastedown. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge of flaps, small crease at bottom corner of rear flap.

Pegasus, New York, 1970.
199 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "(This) is a study of the life, character, and art of one of America's finest poets....(It) accounts for every phase of Miss Moore's life, the early sources of her unusual character, the quick reco gnition and encouragement of her work by Ezra Pound, her years as a young poet in Greenwich Village where her contemporaries included Alfred Kreymborg, William Carlos Williams, H.D., and Wallace Stevens, her distinguished and controversial e d i t o r s h i p of the 'Dial', the most prestigious literary magazine of its day, her 'retirement' to Brooklyn where she continued for decades consistently to produce some of the best poems written in our time. The major part of the book, howev er , is d ev ot ed t o Miss Moore's poetry - from her first book, 'Poems', arranged for and published in 1921 by friends without her knowledge, to the 'Complete Poems' in 1967. Mr. Hall sees danger and protection as recurring preoccupations in Mi ss Mo ore 's wor k, and sh ow s how, in poem after poem, she has explored these themes, calling to her defense a wonderful array of self-sufficient animals and objects, and conjuring such bright shields as independence, courage, love, and imaginati on. T hrou gh minu te atte ntio n t o the language of the poems, he reveals Miss Moore as a poet of fantasy, distortion, and deep feeling....(This book) offers valuable new perspectives on one of the most intriguing figures in twentieth-century le tter s an d mak es acces sib le on e of the richest and most rewarding achievements of modern poetry." 10 Lloyd, Christopher. ST VINCENT & CAMPERDOWN. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The year 1797 witnessed two of the greatest victories in British naval history: St. Vincent and Camperdown. These battles were of decisive importance in the war against revolutionary France since the defeat of the Spanish Fleet in February, and of the Dutch Fleet eight months later, effectively frustrated the French 'Grand Strategy' of invading Ireland and England. An attempt, inspired by the Irish patriot, Wolfe Tone, had been made at the end of the previous year to land a French force in Bantry Bay, but it was a blizzard, rather than the efforts of the English navy, which forced the enemy fleet to return to Brest. The British were lucky on that occasion. They were luckier still in the spring of 1797 when the naval mutinies at Spithead, Yarmouth and the Nore had none of the disastrous consequences which might so easily have followed. (This) account gains immeasurably because the engagements are seen in the strategic context of the war. The battles themselves are described with that understanding of the personalities of the commanders, and of the tactics of their fleets, which might be expected from a professor of the Royal Navy College, Greenwich. The British admirals and their captains bear names which will always be memorable in naval history: Jervis, Nelson, Troubridge, Collingwood, Saumarez, Duncan, the notorious Bligh. These men, and the parts which they played become living to the reader through eye-witness accounts, some of them previously unpublished." Very light browning to edges of text block, bump at top corner of boards - tiny bump at bottom corner, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown. Not only is he a painter who can portray aircraft with exemplary precision, but he can also place that aircraft in a panorama that rivals the work of the finest landscape artist. To top it all off, he is a master of in-flight action; his detail-ed, soaring work communicates the glory of flight. From the thrill of lift-off, the speed of low-level flying, the power of high level bombing, and the danger of the dogfight, to the extraordinary exhilaration of just flying, William Phillips is your copilot. Through the text of 'Smithsonian' and 'National Geographic' writer Ted Park and rare archival photographs, you'll meet some of the top pilots and war aces. And throught the paintings and accompanying sketches, you can experience air travel like never before. Bison, Greenwich, CT, 1983, reprint.
64 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover. ISBN 0861241371 "The B-29 was a larger and more devastating weapon than even its predecessor and namesake, the B-17 Flying Fortress. Developed during World War II by Boeing, this American superbomber could carry a much heavier load and fly over greater distances than any aircraft then in existence. This feature became particularly important during the Pacific War, when American aircraft had to fly well over a thousand miles and back to devastate the Home Isl ands of Japan. The apotheosis of the Superfortress came when it was chosen to carry the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. In later versions it was used by the Americans during the Korean War with great effec t . T h e t echnical changes and use of this massive bomber is told brilliantly by John Pimlott of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Richly illustrated with color and monochrome photographs as well as color sideviews and a full color cutaway dr aw n b y Mi k e Badrocke, this book will be a valuable addition to the libary of aviation enthusiasts." DEAR M: LETTERS FROM A GENTLEMAN OF EXCESS., Pollock, Jack.
14 Pollock, Jack. DEAR M: LETTERS FROM A GENTLEMAN OF EXCESS.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1989 0771070276 / 9780771070273 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
308 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Until 1983 Jack Pollock (please note - NOT Jackson Pollock the American artist) was the owner of The Pollock Gallery in Toronto, where he exhibited new Canadian artists. Then, abruptly, he lost both his business and his health. Twenty years of a flamboyant lifestyle had led to drug addiction, open-heart surgery, bankruptcy, and to a profound spiritual and psychological malaise. A broken man, he retreated to the south of France, expecting to die. He didn't die. Instead, he began to come to terms with himself and his life, in part by confiding his deepest feelings in a torrent of letters to M, a psychiatrist he had consulted briefly before his departure. These letters constitute an utterly honest assessment of his life, his work, his self-worth. They speak of his daily life in France, of his past accomplishments, about contemporary art in Canada, the act of painting, the contradictions of religion, and the power of sexuality. There are stories here of the art scene in Toronto in the fifties and sixties, when artists and their supporters from the Greenwich Village area fought to save their community from destruction. Stories, too, of the discovery of Norval Morrisseau, of encounters with David Hockney, Josef Albers, and a host of other acclaimed painters, of passionate arguments with the Art Gallery of Ontario, of battles in the sixties over the censorship of art. Pollock's forthright manner and his vivid style make (this) a powerful, captivating autobiography of unusual intimacy." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor soiling, very light rubbing.
