1 Beardslee, William A.; Cobb, John B.; Lull, David J.; Pregeant, Russel; Weeden, Theodore J.; Woodbridge, Barry A. BIBLICAL PREACHING ON THE DEATH OF JESUS.
Nashville Abingdon Press 1989 0687034469 / 9780687034468 Soft Cover Very Good
240 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H). "By probing the accounts of Jesus' death in the Gospel of Mark and in Paul's letters, (this book) uncovers a vision of divine power and justice that calls us to become partners in God's struggle to overcome suffering and injustice in the world. In the cross, the authors demonstrate, we as Christians are given a symbol of both weakness and defeat and of power and victory. This symbol is a magnificent reminder of the redemption and transformation of lives and situations through Christ's identification with suffering." 3 Corn, Joseph J. THE WINGED GOSPEL: AMERICA'S ROMANCE WITH AVIATION, 1900-1950.
New York Oxford University Press 1983 0195033566 / 9780195033564 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
177 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." Dust jacket has very minor edge browning.

T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART., Lawrence, T.E.
7 Lawrence, T.E. T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART.
London Cassell 1963 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
260 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w frontispiece. "Robert Graves and Basil Liddell Hart wrote the only two authorized biographies of T.E. Lawrence during his lifetime. Both knew the man well and at the time of his death on May 11th, 1935, their association with him had grown into understanding based on sympathetic knowledge and respect Yet the two had never met; Lawrence kept his friendships sealed off from one another as far as he was able. While engaged on their biographies, both wrote frequent letters asking him for elucidation of particular events and sent typescripts for his comments and corrections. Liddell Hart met him frequently for informal talks. After Lawrence's death, both made selections from the material in their possession which they thought best illustrated his character and qualities, and in 1939 published them in two companion volumes as a limited edition. Now, twenty-four years later, it is possible to republish these selections in a single volume. (T)hey throw a searching light upon a man who was twice a legend, once in his own lifetime, and now again after his death. Of particular interest is the way Lawrence showed different facets of his chameleon-like character to each of his friends. He said himself that he was more a legion than a man - an oblique reference to the demoniac of Gerasa in the Gospel - and here, placed side by side, is the evidence of two synonymous relationships of remarkably different character. His letters to Liddel Hart are businesslike, graphic, factual: to Graves they are more concerned with self-analysis, but cast a deliberate veil over the inner man, only rarely twitched aside. The total impression is a most persuasive defence against such as Adlington's attempts to explode the Arabian 'legend'. They build up a strong impression of Lawrence's particular talents, his remarkable achievements, his enigmatic personality." Previous owner's name stamp at top of both pastedown end papers, small store label at bottom of front pastedown, light patches of liquid staining on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at bottom of rear hinge, light rubbing, minor soiling.

8 Morton, W.L., edited and with introduction by. Assisted by Vera K. Fast. Preface (and based on materials provided by) R.D. Symons. (Monica Storrs.) GOD'S GALLOPING GIRL: THE PEACE RIVER DIARIES OF MONICA STORRS, 1929-1931.
University of British Columbia Press, Vancouver, (1984), reprint.
307 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. B&w photos, drawing, map. "What brough Monica Storrs to embark on a wilderness life in the depressed thirties amidst the hardships of B.C.'s Peace River country - the last North American frontier?...A refined woman of 41, the delicately reared daughter of the dean of Rochester Cathedral, she was following a family tradition in seeking missionary work in rough and alien surroundings. Her mission was the settlers and the frontier. She came to teach Sunday School and the traditions of guiding and scouting to tough, work-hardened country children. She rode horseback to bring the gospel to the families of isolated farmers and trappers. She welcomed the poor and hungry to her home - both the god-fearing and the godless. And she was, for the most part, welcome in theirs...Overcoming early fears of failure and rejection, she learned to subdue the prejudices of her moral and social upbringing and at last won acceptance and a permanent place in the heart of the north..." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, very light rubbing, spine flat and uncreased. Very Good

17 Wilson, Lois. TURNING THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN: A MEMOIR.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1989 0385252277 / 9780385252270 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
258 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Throughout her life Lois Wilson has fought against convention, apathy and inequality. Born in Winnipeg in 1925, in 1965 she became one of the first women, married and with children, to receive ordination as a United Church minister. In 1980 she was elected moderator, making her the first woman in Canada to lead a mainstream denomination. She worked as an indefatigable campaigner for the 'social gospel', bringing the church to the wider community through innovative programs of public participation. (This) is a memoir of conscience, faith and love - be it Wilson's love for her family, her community, her lifelong friend Margaret Laurence, or for the oppressed and outcast around the globe. Never one to shy away from controversy, she challenges us with her views on feminism, homosexual ordination, disarmament, ecumenism, and with her call for a radical restructuring of the world economy. The Christian gospel demands an active, compassionate engagement with the world. Lois Wilson opens our eyes to what that really means." Light wrinkling at top of spine, shallow bump on top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has small corner crease on rear flap, minor wrinkling at top of spine.
