"(E)xplores the many factors which led to the establishment of the Medical Faculty, University of Toronto in which William Thomas Aikins played a leading role. Through the maelstrom of medical politics in the second half of the nineteenth century in Canada, W.T. Aikins emerges as the calm, steadfast leader who eventually triumphed over all obstacles and brought the University of Toronto Medical Faculty into being. To accomplish this, it was necessary to organize Ontario physicians, raise the competence and standing of medical practitioners and guide medical teaching through a crisis of faith, a revolution of physiology and a plethora of epistemologies of healing. His success set the stage for the initial wave of medical excellence in the province, which lead to the magnificent accomplishments of the first quarter of the twentieth century." THE HISTORY OF THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT 1946-1959., Godfrey, F.A., Major.
10 Godfrey, F.A., Major. THE HISTORY OF THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT 1946-1959.
Leo Cooper, London, (1988), Ist edition.
276 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "...covers the Regiment in action in Palestine, India, Malaya, Trieste and Cyprus, as well as when soldiering in Egypt, Greece, BAOR and at home. A complete chapter is devoted to the activities of the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Territorial battalions...Each chapter describes a tour of duty of one battalion in a particular posting and is divided into two parts: the first paints a general picture of the role of the battalion showing why it was there and what it was like to be there with some mention of events of note. The second part of the chapter contains a detailed chonological account of the experiences of the battalion...In Malaya the Regiment won for itself between 1949 and 1953 a reputation unequalled throughout the whole 12-year Emergency there by any other British battalion. While the chapter devoted to Malaya provides the core of the book the other chapters reveal a continous thread of devotion to duty and the author is not exaggerating when he speaks in his preface of 'a quiet, grim determination in the face of extremely hostile conditions' to do a worthwhile job as being characteristic of the Suffolk Regiment until the very end." 13 Godfrey, Walter H. A HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE IN AND AROUND LONDON. ARRANGED TO ILLUSTRATE THE COURSE OF ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND UNTIL THE END OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY WITH A LIST OF PRINCIPAL TWENTIETH-CENTURY BUILDINGS.
Phoenix House, London, 1962, revised edition.
264 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Over 150 b&w illustrations (drawings and photographs) showing buildings, floor plans, architectural details. "....(studies the architecture of London and) beyond to Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire, a nd elsewhere up to a limit of forty miles to introduce and describe the fine houses, churches, abbeys, palaces, and other buildings deserving of public interest in some of the home counties. It could justly be claimed that no major buildi n g o f a r c h itectural merit from Norman to our own time is overlooked, and some of the greater glories of London's stone are the subject of concise yet comprehensive essays, Westminster Abbey, for example, and the peculiarly beautiful Eltham P al ac e , so su rp ri si ngly situated in what is now one of London's populous suburbs. But Mr Godfrey is far from a mere guide. His book brims with profound knowledge and an engaging enthusiasm. He understands that most of his readers are not v ers ed in t he t erm s a nd ref erences of architecture, and these are introduced one by one, and the wonders and excitements of the art of building are revealed in their various beauty. Architectural features and comparative styles, together with pla ns and de tai le d dr awin gs, are included in the 59 text figures, and there are 64 pages of plates containing 104 photographs and rare prints of buildings as they appeared in the past...." 17 Matthews, John, editor/compiler. Foreword by Philip Carr-Gomm. (P.W. Joyce, J.A. MacCulloch, Julius Pokorny, T. Rice Holmes, Lewis Spence, John Toland, Edward Davies, Godfrey Higgins, Algernon Herbert, W.A. Winwood Read, Iolo Morgannwg, et al. THE DRUID SOURCEBOOK: FROM EARLIEST TIMES TO THE PRESENT DAY. (SOURCEBOOK.)
London Brockhampton 1998 1860198422 / 9781860198427 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
384 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "The Druids have long been misrepresented and misunderstood. The only true records that survive from when the Druids originally flourished are those of the classical writers, who were completely opposed to Druids and their practices. Julius Caesar wrote disparagingly about them and sought to destroy them. The historical reality is that Druidism and early Christianity lived side by side for a long period, and a considerable amount of Druid philosophy was absorbed into Christianity itself. Whether Druidism is regarded as a Celtic priesthood in origin and name, or a religion, it is clear that Druids and Druidism were important aspects of the life of the early European peoples, especially in Britain. In this comprehensive and brilliantly researched book, John Matthews presents a cross-section through the diverse layers of Druid history and custom. Using rare sources - often lost or forgotten texts and translations - he shows how various aspects of Druidism originated and how these contributed to practices we see today. A Druid himself, (he) has expert knowledge and avoids the popular misinterpretation of Druidism as 'wanting to live in the past'. Instead, this book reveals the truth about Druidism, its ideas and customs, and makes a vital contribution to current interest in the Druids." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very small bump at bottom corner of both boards, very minor eubbing on boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

20 Oliver, Peter. G. HOWARD FERGUSON: ONTARIO TORY.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802033466 / 9780802033468 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Inscribed By Author
501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on free front endpaper, minor glue residue on endpapers, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light edge browning, one very small tear archivally taped some rubbing with color loss at bottom of spine.
