SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700., Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna.
2 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

LUCILLE TEASDALE: DOCTOR OF COURAGE., Cowley, Deborah. Inscribed by author.
5 Cowley, Deborah. Inscribed by author. LUCILLE TEASDALE: DOCTOR OF COURAGE.
Montreal XYZ Publishing 2005 1894852168 / 9781894852166 Near Fine Inscribed By Author
177 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, map. "Lucille Teasdale was determined to become a doctor and help children in need. She entered medical school in 1950 and was one of the first women in Quebec to receive a diploma as a surgeon. In 1961, she married an Italian doctor, Piero Conti, and went to northern Uganda with him. There, they established St. Mary's-Lacor Hospital. For over 35 years, they treated people with contagious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS. They continually expanded the services of the hospital and trained Ugandans to staff it. Dr. Lucille performed thousands of operations under extremely difficult conditions. When civil war broke out in Uganda in the early 1970s, she was forced to become a war surgeon. Even though repeated rebel attacks on the hospital put their lives in constant peril, the couple stayed on to help the people who depended on them for medical care. Before the world knew about HIV, Dr. Lucille contracted the virus when sharp bone fragments penetrated her rubber gloves in the course of performing an operation on a wounded soldier. She took precautions but contined to work for another ten years to save lives and raise funds for the hospital. She spoke out boldly on HIV/AIDS and became an inspiring example to people living with the disease. She died of AIDS in 1996 and is buried in Uganda, on the grounds of Lacor Hospital." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

OCCUPATIONAL COSTUME IN ENGLAND FROM THE ELEVENTH CENTURY TO 1914., Cunnington, Phillis and Lucas, Catherine. With Alan Mansfield.
6 Cunnington, Phillis and Lucas, Catherine. With Alan Mansfield. OCCUPATIONAL COSTUME IN ENGLAND FROM THE ELEVENTH CENTURY TO 1914.
London Adam & Charles Black 1967 First Edition Good+ Good
427 pp, 9 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w with drawings, reproductions and photographs. "(This book) fills a wide gap in the history of costume, since former books on the subject have concentrated on the fashions of the more leisured classes (a minority) rather than on the clothes worn by people at work. The occupations covered include those of outdoor manual worker, tradesmen, craftsmen, miners, seamen, public and domestic servants. In describing working clothes, the authors show that they gradually evolved from a comparative uniformity in medieval times to a later rich variety related to particular occupations. (An) entertaining book for the general reader as well as a source of historically accurate information for teachers and students of social history, theatrical producers and all interested in the dress of working men and women through the centuries." Chapter headings: Introduction; Worker on the Land; Seamen and Fisherfolk; Miners, Coal Carriers, Navvies; Tradesmen and Craftsmen Part 1 (Carpenters / Paper Caps / Builders / Smiths / Textile Workers / Tailors); Tradesmen and Craftsmen Part 2 (Butchers / Millers, Bakers and Cooks / Liquor Trade / Street Vendors); Household Servants - Men; Household Servants - Women; Transport (Railways / Cabbies and Cads, Bus and Tram Crews); Postal Service and Stage Coaches; Police; Firemen; Miscellaneous Servants of the Public (Dustmen / Chimney-sweeps / Linkboys / Lamplighters / District Messengers / Barbers); Medical Profession (Barber-surgeons / Physicians / Surgeons and Hygiene / Quacks / Apothecaries / Nurses); Evolution of Protective Clothing; Some Special Relations of Clothing to Work (Clothing in Relation to Carrying / Sartorial Symbols / Costume for Advertisement / The Rationale of Irrational Clothes); Bibliography and List of Museums; Souces of Figures; Index. Light browning and some foxing on endpapers - mostly front endpaper, light browning to edges of text block, slight fading to colour of spine and also a very small light stain, very light edge wear, small area of shelf soiling on bottom of text block, slight browning to board edges, scattered tiny water marks on top of text block causing colour fading. THE WOMAN IN FASHION., Moore, Doris Langley.
10 Moore, Doris Langley. THE WOMAN IN FASHION.
London B. T. Batsford 1949 First Edition Good- Fair Felix Fonteyn, photographer.
184 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, colour fronispiece shows Vanessa Redgrave in pink tafetta dress. "(The author) possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. (This book) makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge, and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn, as they were at the time when they were first made: that is, they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh, Ruth Draper, Margot Fonteyn, Moira Shearer, Beatrice Lillie, Googie Withers, Mai Zetterling, and many others well known on the stage, the films, and in similar spheres, the costumes (of c.1800 to 1926) 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. (Moore's) text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman, with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight, sympathy, and expertise." Light browning to endpapers - small stain on rear pastedown, soft bump to top corner of pages, small bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered small areas of color fading on front board and on edges of boards, very small liquid stain on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very small stain on inside of each panel, moderate edge wear/wrinkling with some small tears and tiny chips, light fading and moderate wear/wrinkling on spine, light soiling and light liquid mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.
