From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." DAY OF THE FLYING FOX: THE TRUE STORY OF WORLD WAR II PILOT CHARLEY FOX., Pitt, Steve.
4 Pitt, Steve. DAY OF THE FLYING FOX: THE TRUE STORY OF WORLD WAR II PILOT CHARLEY FOX.
Sandcastle / Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
140 pp, square soft cover (8" x 8"). ISBN 9781550028089 B&w photograph. Canadian Second World War Spitfire pilot Charley Fox, now in his late eighties, has had a thrilling life, especially on July 17, 1944, in France when he spotted a black staff car, the kind usually employed to drive high-ranking Nazi Germany dignitaries. Already noted for his skill in dive bombing and strafing the enemy, Fox went in to attack the automobile. As it turned out, the car very likely contained famed G e r m a n General Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, and Charley is now considered by many to be the pilot who seriously wounded him. Rommel, who at the time was the Germans' key military commander in France orchestrating the Third Reich's resistance t o th e Al li e s' D-Day invasion, was never the same after that. (The author) focuses on this seminal event in Charley Fox's life and in the conduct of the war, but he also provides fascinating aspects of the period, including profiles of noted Can ad ian a ce Geo rg e 'Buzz' Beurling, famed legless British pilot Douglas Bader, and Great Escape architect Walter Floody, as well as sidebars about Hurricanes, Spitfires, Messerschmitts, Focke-Wulfs, early jets, V-1 rockets, and a whole lot more." I nter ior - clea n a nd tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - small minor corner crease on front cover, very minor rubbing. Very Good+

SIEGFRIED SASSOON. TWAYNE'S ENGLISH AUTHORS SERIES., Sternlicht, Sanford. (Siegfried Sassoon.)
5 Sternlicht, Sanford. (Siegfried Sassoon.) SIEGFRIED SASSOON. TWAYNE'S ENGLISH AUTHORS SERIES.
Twayne, New York, 1993.
136 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0805770216 "Born into a privileged family in Kent in 1886, Sassoon spent a largely unremarkable childhood. Upon completing his last year at the distinguished secondary school Marlborough Col lege, a schoolmaster wrote of him: 'shows no particular intelligence or aptitude for any branch of his work; seems unlikely to adopt any special career'. After two years at Cambridge and a few more pursuing gentlemanly pastimes, Sassoon d e c i d e d t o concentrate on his poetry, which remained mediocre. This was to change with his entry into the army, just a few days before Britain entered the (First World War), and the inspiration the horrors of trench warfare provided him. Hi s wa r po em s w er e t o have an immediacy and vibrancy unmatched by any he had written before. In this study, Sanford Sternlicht examines not only this poetry but Sassoon's other literary endeavours, including the widely acclaimed 'The Complete M em oir s of Geo rg e She rs to n', to create the most comprehensive study of him to date. The first book to profit from the publication of the Sassoon diaries in the 1980s, (it) is an authroitative and well-balanced introduction to the life and wor k o f a fa sci nati ng wr iter . It also provides strong evidence against the popular view that Sassoon was a purely Georgian poet, placing his combat poetry squarely in the modernist tradition. Sassoon' copious post-World War I satirical and relig ious poe try is fully ex pli cated a nd evaluated." Fine/Fine
