"This book consists of a cluster of epigrams, forty-nine essays on various subjects, a poem dispraising dogmata, and several selections from an unfinished play. Taken ensemble, the forty-nine astonish and cheer and enlighten their progenitor. He's astonished that, as nearly as anyone can make out, I wrote them. He's cheered because, while re-reading them, I've encountered a great deal of liveliness and nothing dead. Last but not least; he's enlightened via the realization that, whereas times can merely change, an individual may grow." From the author's Foreword. There is a previous owner's erased pencil signature mark at the top of the free front endpaper (some light thinning to the paper) and a very slight indentation of the signature on the adjacent half-title page; a very small light foxing mark at the top edge of the verso of the frontispiece; light toning to pages; a 5" x 2" very light area of browning (possibly from a newspaper clipping) on page 230 text page and on page 231 blank page; 1/8" tear at bottom of front hinge cloth; light browning to edges of text block, boards and spine; a small light scuff on the fore-edge of the text block; very light edge wear - mostly at corners and at top/bottom of spine.

Conway Maritime Press, London, 1988.
178 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. ISBN 0851774776 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, drawings, colour plates. "Contrary to popular opinion, the defeat of the Armada was not the end of the Spanish Navy as a major maritime power. Indeed it underwent a real renaissance in the eighteenth century, and at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars was the third largest navy in the world. Its ships were well designed and superbly built, and were officered by brave and dedicated professionals, who were nowhere near as ineffective in combat as often represented. This is the first English language book to look at Spanish naval forces in the century before Trafalgar, an d p r o v i des a long overdue reassessment of the aims and achievements of the service. Following a brief overview of the factors which shaped development and the main maritime events, more detailed chapters cover Spanish warship design and const ru c ti on , an d the much-maligned officer corps, concluding with sections on the battle itself and its significance to Spain....It is illustrated throughout with contemporary plans, paintings and ship models, and will prove stimulating reading for la ym an and s pec ia list alike." Very small bump at bottom of rear hinge area. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good+/Very Good+

250 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Stuart was an ordinary London doctor, nothing more. But, having practised medicine in the Far East, he did have a unique knowledge of rare poisons; which was perhaps the reason why he was involved (with strange and mysterious goings on, including warnings of danger coming from the East from a beautiful woman calling herself Mademoiselle Dorian). Now the stranger in his study said: 'Permit me to present myself - Gaston Max, at your service!' The surprises of the night were evidently not over yet. For Stuart was due to perform a post mortem examination on the body of Gaston Max, the French detective, in a few hours time. 'The Golden Scorpion' is a typically bizarre and thrilling mystery from the pen of Sax Rohmer, the creator of Dr. Fu-Manchu." Faint fold at bottom of first few pages, light wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, large corner crease on front flap, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine anf flap-folds, crease along bottom edge of rear pane and flap, browning on inside - mainly at top edge.
