Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1986 0771013396 / 9780771013393 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edgewear/wrinkling.

392 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330376721 B&w plates. "1918 was probably the most dramatic and decisive year in British military history. In the spring there was a fear that Britain might have to evacuate her troops from the continent and lo se the war. In the summer came the great turnaround, and by autumn the German armies began to retreat. In November 1918 the First World War was over. This book tells the story of an amazing year through the authentic voice of the British s o l d i e r , a year in which, remarkably, the casualty rates were even higher than those of 1916 and 1917, the years of the Somme and Passchendaele." 270 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "French soldiers in the First World War were not as well equipped as either their German opponents or their British allies. They were worse fed too, and began the war trained in badly out-of-date tactics and wearing unsuitable uniforms. Anthony Clayton investigates how the French army adjusted to the grim realities of warfare on the western front. He takes particular interest in the soldiers' morale: how, despite appalling losses and dreadful privations, the ordinary soldiers fought on until 1917 when widespread mutinies paralysed the army. It fell to two remarkable soldiers, Marshals Petain and Foch, to retore the soldiers' faith and lead them to victory in 1918." 13 Corrigan, Gordon. MUD, BLOOD AND POPPYCOCK: BRITAIN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Cassell 2003 0304359556 / 9780304359554 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
431 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w maps, photographs, diagrams. "The First World War was a unique experience for the United Kingdom: the only time Britain fielded a mass army that opposed the main enemy in the primary theatre of war. One consequence of this 'continental commitment' was that Britain suffered many more casualties in 1914-18 than in the Second World War, a factor that has coloured post-1945 attitudes to 'the Great War'. Yet, as Gordon Corrigan reveals, the First World War was neither unnecessary nor badly conducted - two claims made with such frequency in the 1960s that they became the new orthodoxy. The British Army did make mistakes during the First World War, but most were honest errors made by men as well trained and as well prepared as they could be, given the unprecedented expansion of the pre-1914 army into a force of over three million men and women. (He has) come to the conclusion that Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, far from being the 'butcher and bungler' of popular belief, was the man who took a tiny British army and expanded it, trained it and prepared it, until it was the only Allied army capable of defeating the Germans militarily in 1918." Very slight cigarette odor, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

"The second battle of Ypres provided the First Canadian Division with its baptism of fire, and it could not have been worse. They were holding a salient, jutting out so that they were targets from three sides. The Germans, for the first time ever, used chlorine gas, which turned the Canadians' bayonets green and destroyed their lungs. Then they discovered that in combat conditions their R oss rifles jammed, as the waves of Germans hit their trenches...At the end John McCrae looked across the battleground where so many hundreds of his countrymen had fallen, and wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. Back in Canada, the war began in earnest t h e day the casualty lists were posted. THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916., Duffy, Christopher.
18 Duffy, Christopher. THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2006 0297846892 / 9780297846895 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
383 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. ""The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clark; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. but, as Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the German view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war. The picture that emerges is a far cry from 'Blackadder'. The questioning by German intelligence officers was more systematic and detailed than that employed by their British counterparts. It was also more open-ended, encouraging those captured to speak freely and at length whilst still in shock from combat and capture. Their recollections are of unique interest because of their immediacy, separated from the event by a matter of hours or a few days at most, rather than being contaminated by the passing of time and outside opinion. This is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle. From the German point of view, the battle was a disaster. And the fact that every British soldier taken prisoner still believed Britian would win the war gave German intelligence teams a fair indication that their empire would go down to defeat." Minor cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of textblock, faint thumb print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.
