ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS., Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D.
5 Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D. ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS.
Portland Timber Press 2005 0881926116 / 9780881926118 Reprint Very Good+ Very Good Errol D. Hooper Jr.
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Colour photographs, b&w drawings. "(T)he authors look at the structure, development, genetics, and reproduction of plants, the most prominent actors in garden ecosystems. They describe other garden organisms, focusing on those with the most influential roles - insects, nematodes, and microorganisms - as well as garden denizens ranging from microscopic prions to elephants. (They) explore nutrient cycles, sunlight, air, water, and the soil - the physical environment within which garden organisms live and function - and they consider the ways plants function in their environment and form communities. They then examine the intricate interactions among garden-dwelling organisms, ranging from the harmful to the beneficial. Once this groundwork is laid, they introduce humans into the garden ecosystem and consider how gardeners can use ecological principles to wisely manage their garden ecosystems. Throughout the book, the authors cite hundreds of examples drawn from personal experience and from the gardening and ecological literature. It becomes clear that gardens - whether a group of potted plants on a patio, a few beds carved out of a lawn, or extensive plantings over several acres - are indeed connected to the natural world in endless and important ways." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny dents on spine and hinges.

239 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour photographs, drawings. "(A) mixture of delightfully written anecdotes covering Roald Dahl's family upbringing, his youth and early days in Africa, and his happiness at home with Liccy, his wife, and their numerous children, grandchildren and friends. For this extensive family, there is no more enjoyable way of relaxing than sharing good food and wine. The meals they enjoy together round the old pine farmhouse table at Gipsy House are either fine examples of national dishes of their heritage - Norwegian, French, British, etc. - or favourite recipes that have delighted three generations of discerning eaters. Many recipes have acquired a particular significance for the Dahl family over the years, and these are introduced with reminiscences rich in nostalgia and humour. This book has many sections. The text has been written by Roald and Liccy Dahl, their children, close family and friends. The illustrations are by Quentin Blake, photographs by Jan Baldwin and all the recipes have been cooked by Josie Fison. The recipes are for all occasions, covering family birthday parties, Christmas and Easter celebrations, Roald's passion for chocolate, onions and wine, his enthusiasm for gambling and gardening and finally, a Dahl-style chapter: Hangman's Suppers - contributed by Francis Bacon, P.D. James, John le Carre, Peter Ustinov and others. It is a medly of great reading and good cooking." Light remainder mark on bottom of text block. Gradually, the cultural barriers were breaking down as the Phillips became more involved in sharing the experience of being pioneer Canadians..." 13 Hensel, Margaret. Foreword by Tasha Tudor. Garden plans by Gordon Morrison. ENGLISH COTTAGE GARDENING FOR AMERICAN GARDENERS.
New York W.W. Norton 1992 0393030121 / 9780393030129 Third Printing Very Good Very Good- Margaret Hensel, photographs.
239 pp, square small 4to (10 1/4" x 10 1/4"). Profusely illustrated with beautiful color photographs. "Thanks to the extraordinary photographs and gardening wisdom in this classic book, the elegant intimacy of the English cottage garden is a practical possibility for amateur gardeners in diverse regions of the United States. Margaret Hensel, whose photographs and articles on garden design have appeared in 'Horticulture' and many other magazines, has analyzed the aesthetic and horticultural elements of ten representative cottage gardens - eight in England and two in the United States (including Tasha Tudor's at Corgi Cottage in Vermont). Her spectacular photographs render the look and atmosphere of these gardens, while her text focuses on easily grown, readily available plants that are adaptable to a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions. In the back of the book may be found specific horticultural information on a wide variety of cottage garden plants commonly available in the United States, glossaries of Latin and common names, a list of sources for old rose varieties, and a detailed index. The gardens in this beautiful book are not those of the great estates of England, manicured by staffs of professional gardeners. They are, instead, labors of love on the part of individual homeowners, many of whom started with bleak, rubble-strewn lots and went on to create the enchanted settings pictured here. " Slight waviness to edges of text block; a few tiny dints on top & bottom edges of boards, rear edge of spine and on rear board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, soft crease down rear panel near hinge, scattered tiny dints at edges and on panels, several light rub marks.

AN OAK SPRING POMONA: A SELECTION OF RARE BOOKS ON FRUIT IN THE OAK SPRING GARDEN LIBRARY, DESCRIBED BY SANDRA RAPHAEL., Raphael, Sandra. Introduction by Rachel Lambert Mellon.
18 Raphael, Sandra. Introduction by Rachel Lambert Mellon. AN OAK SPRING POMONA: A SELECTION OF RARE BOOKS ON FRUIT IN THE OAK SPRING GARDEN LIBRARY, DESCRIBED BY SANDRA RAPHAEL.
Upperville, Virginia Oak Spring Garden Library 1990 0300049366 / 9780300049367 Very Good+ Very Good
276 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H). Patterned endpapers. "(This) is the second of a series of catalogues describing selections of the rare books and other material in the Oak Spring Garden Library, a collection formed by Mrs Paul Mellon. The 'Pomona' describes a hundred books and manuscripts about fruit, with illustrations taken from some of the most beautiful books on the subject, as well as original drawings or paintings. The earliest book described is Bussato's 'Giardino di Agricoltura' of 1592, the latest 'The Herefordshire Pomona', an encyclopaedia of apples and pears from the 1870s. In between there is a gathering of fruit books large and small: La Quintinie's 'Instruction pour les Jardins fruitiers', first published in 1690 and translated by John Evelyn three years later, Duhamel's 'Traite des Arbres fruitiers', and nearly fifty others from France and Britain, among them Brookshaw's giant 'Pomona Britannica' and a handful of pocket-sized books of directions on grafting and cultivating the best varieties available. Sections on fruit-growing in these two countries are followed by others on fruit elsewhere in Europe (including the books of Knoop, Gallesio, and Bivort) and fruit in America (with Downing, Hovey, and several sets of nurserymen's plates) before chapters on citrus fruit (beginning with Ferrari's 'Hesperides' of 1646), apples and pears, peaches and soft fruit, grapes, melons, and tropical fruit. Each description makes clear the background of the book concerned and its relationship to others, while a generous number of illustrations in colour and black and white help to give an impression of their contents. Many of the Oak Spring copies have particularly interesting associations, recorded in inscriptions, bookplates, or binding details, all of which are described." Minor soiling on top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one 1" closed tear, small area of creasing a top corner of rear flap.
