THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
5 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

272 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs. "Compared to the well-published achievements of the Navy, Army and Air Force, an ocean of silence surrounds the long-gone Canadian Merchant Navy. And yet, Canada operated the wartime world's fourth largest Merchant Navy, almost all of it built in Canadian shipyards. Robert Halford provides an in-depth look at the Merchant Navy from its glorious beginnings to its unceremonious dissolution. During wartime, the merchant seamen were the heroes of the 1939-1945 war, the fourth arm of the Services. By 1948 they had undergone a quick image change, transformed from heroes to anonymous troublemakers hindering the shipping industry. 'The Unknown Navy' endeavours to throw light on the Merchant Navy's important contribution to the Allied cause during World War II." Dust jacket has a tiny scuff/dent on the front panel.

An ex-library copy with the only library markings being a security tag on the rear endpaper and four lines of identification on the top right corner of the front free endpaper, crossed out with black felt pen. Dust jacket labels have been removed cleanly and shows no residue. Volume 2 of 'The L.M. Montgomery Reader' "narrates the development of L.M. Montgomery's critical reputation in the seventy years since her death in 1942. (It) traces milestones and turning points such as adaptations for stage and screen, posthumous publications, and the development of Montgomery Studies as a scholarly field. Lefebvre's introduction also considers Montgomery's publishing history in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom at a time when her work remained in print not because it was considered part of a university canon of literature, but simply due to the continued interest of readers. The twenty samples of Montgomery scholarship included in this volume broach topics such as gender and genre, narrative strategies in fiction and life writing, translation, and Montgomery's archival papers. They reflect shifts in Montgomery's critical reputation decade by decade: the 1960s, when a milestone chapter on Montgomery coincided with a second wave of texts seeking to create a canon of Canadian literature; the 1970s, in the midst of a sustained reassessment of popular fiction and of literature by women; the 1980s, when the publication of Montgomery's life writing, which coincided with the broadcast of critically acclaimed television productions adapted from her fiction, radically altered how readers perceived her and her work; the 1990s, when a conference series on Montgomery began to generate a sustained amount of scholarship; and the opening years of the twenty-first century, when the field of Montgomery Studies became both international and interdisciplinary. This is the first book to consider the posthumous life of one of Canada's most eduringly popular authors." Very minor wear on bottom edge of boards, a small crease at top corner of half-title page, a progressively smaller light bump at top corner of pages 1 thru 80. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, minor surface rubbing, two partial pieces of cello-tape on inside surface, a tiny dent on rear hinge.

Montgomery Reader' contains selections focusing "on Montgomery's role as a public celebrity and as the author of the resoundingly successful 'Anne of Green Gables' (1908). These essays and interviews are augmented by additional pieces that discuss her work's literary and cultural value in relation to an emerging canon of Canadian literature. Each volume (of this series) is accompanied by an extensive introduction and detailed commentary by leading Montgomery scholar Benjamin Lefebvre that trace the interplay between the author and the critic, as well as between the private and the public Montgomery." EMILY'S QUEST, Montgomery, L.M. (Lucy Maud.)
19 Montgomery, L.M. (Lucy Maud.) EMILY'S QUEST
London Harrap 1979 0245534121 / 9780245534126 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
204pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). The third book in the "Emily" series. " 'Emily of New Moon' has now left the world of the High School, so vividly encountered in 'Emily Climbs', and the real battles of life begin in earnest for the orphan determined to overcome her early handicaps. In a dramatic and unexpected way she achieves success as a writer just as L.M. Montgomery did with 'Anne of Green Gables', after refusing an offer to go to New York and work in journalism. But she finds the problems of love and marriage far more difficult, and the author keeps the reader in genuine suspense until the last few pages. In the opinion of many critics the Emily books are superior to the 'Anne of Green Gables' series, for the author puts far more of herself and her real experiences into them. Whereas the Anne books are clearly written to entertain, the Emily books are written more from the heart, and thus carry greater conviction." Small bump at top of spine, slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped, minor rubbing.
