THE QUIET FIELDS., 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford.
1 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford. THE QUIET FIELDS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." Toronto Natural Heritage 1997 189621925X / 9781896219257 Near Fine
82 pp, 9" H. "In this new collection of poems, noted naturalist-writer, Robert Nero, offers insightful reflections on a variety of birds, from peregrine falcons, great grey owls and common ravens to purple martins and orioles. We are also offered surprising glimpses of such diverse wildlife as frogs, chipmunks, shrews, ants, dragonflies and spiders. It is nature in all seasons that holds Dr. Nero's attention as he develops intriguing views of ordinary scenes and events. But the poems in this collection also speak of love, passion and introspection, thus revealing a deeper and increasingly personal side of one of Canada's most respected naturalists. A combination of scientific training and experience, along with ecological awareness and writer's craft, is brought to bear in this fine assortment of poems." 19 Stephens, H.L. Foreword by Philip Hofer. A FROG HE WOULD A WOOING GO. ROM ORIGINALS DESIGNS BY H.L. STEPHENS.
Walker and Company, New York, 1967, first printing.
Unpaginated, 10" H, hardcover with pictorial front board - no dust jacket. "H.L. Stephens (1824-1882, originally from Philadelphia, later working in New York) was a very good illustrator who has been accorded faint praise by the critics. The reaso n is largely the result of the poor reproductions in which his work appeared. That is why this edition of 'A Frog he Would A-Wooing Go' uses the original drawings by Stephens, which are at the moment in private hands at Harvard University, r a t h e r t han the reproductive lithographs of 1865 which were made from them. The difference is striking; for these drawings compare with the works of Stephens' far more celebrated contemporary John Tenniel, whose 'Alice in Wonderland', Londo n , 19 65 , fi rs t s aw the light of day in the same twelve months." 15 full page monotone illustrations with verses underneath. Slight wrinkling to bottom edges of pages, slight waviness due to dampness at bottom fore-edge of pages - light wate rm ar k o n l as t p age , min or to light soiling on boards - mainly on rear board, tiny bump at top of spine.
