Mrs. Candy and her pets: the cat, the dog, the cow and the chickens are entranced with all the new stories. There are green-clad dancers who vanish at cockcrow. A strange feathered child hatches from a speckled egg. A baby is fished out of the sea. Ordinary-seeming children make snowmen who can talk, and have a friend who is a witch. Shellover tells a new story about Minnie the cat, and her inquisitive kittens; another about two boys in an adventure playground; and the little girl and her friends, the horse and the hen. When Shellover gets sleepy this time, the pets decide to tell their own stories. The results are delightful!" THE BOY AND THE RIVER. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 46., Bosco, Henri. Translated by Gerard Hopkins.
14 Bosco, Henri. Translated by Gerard Hopkins. THE BOY AND THE RIVER. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 46.
London Oxford University Press 1967 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Lynton Lamb.
119 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). The first edition of this title in the Oxford Children's Library series. B&w illustrations by Lynton Lamb, dust jacket design by Glenys Ambrus. Originally published under the title: "L'Enfant et la Riviere". "This is the story of Pascalet and the river that at first filled him with fear and curiosity and later, when he knew it better, became his friend. It ran beyond the flat French fields that surrounded his home, and though he was forbidden to go to the river, once or twice every year the river came to him. It came when the flood waters ran swiftly over the low fields almost to Pascalet's door; but it came more urgently and mysteriously in the shape of Bargabot, the poacher, whose tempting talk of the joys that awaited those who ventured down to the water's edge filled Pascalet with a longing to escape from the monotony of his quiet home and seek for himself the magic beyond the fields. One fine spring day Pascalet's chance came to explore the river. He found there all the dangers his parents had warned him against, and many beautiful things beside, but chief among all he found Gatzo - a boy of his own age - and together they launched a boat and floated away into a world of enchantment: Pascalet dreaming and fearful, Gatzo sharp and practical and brave." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has minor wear and light edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Richards.
302 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "Oxen were still yoked to sledges and the scythe and the ax and the crosscut saw were common everyday tools when Ernest Buckler grew up on a Nova Scotia farm at the edge of the wilderness. (This book) recalls those days. With sudden stabbing immediacy it brings the reader a bird sound, an odor, acrid or delicious, a remembered vagary of wind or sun, the timbre of a voice, or the true look of the men and women who peopled the Nova Scotia of Mr. Buckler's boyhood. It brings back as well the whole texture of a life that now exists only in our memories of the snowbound world of Whittier and the farm life of our grandfathers' times - a life so deeply rooted in the eleentals of earth and rock, wind and weather, and so closely paced to the rhythm of the seasons, of birth, growth and death, that each change on the face of nature (a blood-red sunset, a frost at dawn, the first pales leaves on a silver birch) is resonant with meaning." Gift inscription and two small stamps on free front endpaper, small bump to top edge of front board, minor rubbing. "In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders."
