2 Beltrone, Art and Beltrone, Lee. A WARTIME LOG.
Charlottesville, Virginia Howell 1994 0943231906 / 9780943231907 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Authors.
208 pp, 9 3/4" H. Signed on front free endpaper: "Art Beltrone / Lee Beltrone". Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "With watercolors extracted from food can labels and paint brushes made from their own hair, downed World War II American airmen recreated their recollections of combat and experiences as prisoners of war in blank books provided by the Y.M.C.A. With remarkable ingenuity and creativity, prisoners used their Wartime Logs as a mental escape from the physical confinement of German prison camps. Sketches, illustrations, poetry, diary entries - all were recorded in each prisoner's log book. (This book), printed and bound in roughly the size and format of the originals, features artwork and anecdotes from more than a dozen log books kept by U.S. Army Air Force pilots and crewmen held prisoner in German camps during WWII. Adventure, boredom, laughter, horror, and courage fill these pages. (It) provides a unique look into a chapter of history that should never be forgotten and will inspire us all." AVRO SHACKLETON. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 3., Chartres, John.
5 Chartres, John. AVRO SHACKLETON. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 3.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, Surrey, 1999, reprint.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711015139 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "The Avro Shackleton completed 40 years of front-line service in the Royal Air Force. The first prototype (in shape an d concept a direct descendent of the Manchester-Lancaster-Lincoln-Tudor lineage) first flew in 1949, and the AEW aircraft of No 8 Squadron were still operational in the early 1990s. The aircraft undoubtedly marked the end of an era of the R A F ' s f o u r-piston-engined 'heavies', although it remained in service for nearly 30 years after it was first classified as obsolete. Built originally for anti-submarine warfare, the Shackleton had been used by the RAF for other roles, includ in g se ar ch an d re scue, colonial policing, troop and freight carrying, supplying weather ships, maritime surveillance and showing the flag....the author not only traces the Shackleton's origins and activities in many different roles but brings out t he dee p a f fec ti on felt for the type by both air and ground crews in spite of the arduous and sometimes perilous nature of the operations in which it had been involved. This book was first published in 1985 and statements made then were curr ent . Many of th ese may we ll have been overtaken by subsequent events." Dust jacket has fading to the spine colour - lettering still bright. Fine/Very Good

12 Due, John F. THE INTERCITY ELECTRIC RAILWAY INDUSTRY IN CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
118 pp, 10 1/8" H. Canadian Studies in Economics No.18. B&w photographs, maps, tables, graphs. "The intercity electric railway industry in Canada, which began in 1887, ended in 1959. Peak interest in the industry was between 1910 and 1920, the era of Sir Adam Beck's projected radial network that would have covered much of the southern portion of Ontario. But the plans came too late and the radial system was never built. The Canadian electric lines developed later than their United States counterparts, but lasted somewhat longer, and for a time in the 1950's there were more electric passenger-carrying trains in Canada than in the United States. This study describes the rise and decline of the electric railway industry in Canada. It includes a general history of the industry, the development of the lines, their financing and control, and a brief but fascinating account of the 25 individual companies which operated the roads." Tiny wrinkle at bottom of front hinge, tiny ink mark on rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, small tear at top of front hinge - archivally taped.

246 pp, 9 3/8" H. Dark blue boards with lighter blue and white lettering on spine and front board - no dust jacket (as issued). Map. "(T)he first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for 'Maritime Rights' which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. (T)races the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands, through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adroitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem." Light edge wear, tear at top of last index page archivally taped, light wrinkling on page leaf 123/124.

WESTERN RAIL TRAIL., McKillop, Norman.
20 McKillop, Norman. WESTERN RAIL TRAIL.
London Thomas Nelson and Sons 1962 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
190 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Norman McKillop, a retired top-link driver, has fulfulled his ambition of visiting North America, and has written the story of his journeys on the Canadian railways as he travelled from East to West. After he completed his Western Rail Trail proper over Canada he spent some days in New York and neighbouring states. His description of his visits to the Pennsyl-vania and Grand Central Stations with all their marvels of electronic working and devices makes fascinating reading. His enthusiasm for everything to do with railway working won the co-operation of every railway officer and man, and the whole account is an intensely human document. He not only noted all the details in which Canadian railways differ from those in this country (Great Britain), but his story gives a very vivid account of the people with whom he came in contact." Slight bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small edge tears with old tape on inside surface, light edge wear.
