447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

CALIFORNIA IN 1792: A SPANISH NAVAL VISIT., Cutter, Donald C. (Dionisio Alcala Galiano, Cayetano Valdes, Jose Cardero.)
7 Cutter, Donald C. (Dionisio Alcala Galiano, Cayetano Valdes, Jose Cardero.) CALIFORNIA IN 1792: A SPANISH NAVAL VISIT.
Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." THE YOUNG SURVEYOR., Knox, Olive.
14 Knox, Olive. THE YOUNG SURVEYOR.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1967 Reprint Very Good+ Good+
164 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Map endpapers. "What boy or girl wouldn't like the adventure of surveying in the Rockies when pack-mules, gold miners, and railway surveyors followed trails known only to the Indians? Bruce, the greenhorn from San Francisco, and Josette, the French girl from Edmonton, and her half-brother Mike had that exciting experience when they accompanied Edward Jarvis on his Canadian Pacific Railway surveys in 1874-1875. During the summer the two boys endured the hardships and adventures of an exploratory survey from Kamloops to Tete Jaune Cache, then an instrumental survey along the North Fraser River to Fort George. A rock slide, plunge into a treacherous river, forest fire, cougar attack, snow avalanche and losing the trail are some of the dramatic events in this book for both boys and girls. That was the life of the first Canadian Pacific surveyors, who pioneered the trail-finding so that the Atlantic could be linked to the Pacific with steel." Minor soiling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, several small closed tears with creases, a few tiny chips, light foxing at top of rear flap, a few tiny light foxing marks along top edge, light dye stain at top inside edge of rear panel, very light rubbing on rear panel.

344 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Signed on half title page: "Moshe Safdie / March 1997". "Influenced by the diverse cultures of Canada, Israel and the USA, Moshe Safdie's architecture displays a richly evolving tectonic and spatial sensibility. During 30 years of practice, he has designed public institutions, housing and mixed-use complexes, and developed designs for both existing urban districts and entirely new citities. In this monograph more than 40 of his projects are illustrated with spectacular photography, original design sketches and text. These works include his seminal Habitat project for the Canadian Expo '67, the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Vancouver's Library Square in Caada; the Yad Vashem Children's Holocaust Memorial, the Restoration of the Jewish Quarter, Mamilla Center and Hebrew Union College in the city of Jerusalem; the Skirball Museum and Cultural Center in Los Angeles; and the urban designs for Montreal, Senegal, Singapore and the new city of Modi'in in Israel. Together, they demonstrate the depth of Safdie's work, and an architectural vocabulary full of light and colour. In his essay 'The Language and Medium of Architecture' and in an interview with Wendy Kohn, Moshe Safdie discusses his architecture and influences. Each of the essays, by Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Witold Rybczynski and Peter G. Rowe, covers a different facet of Safdie's architectural oeuvre." Two tiny dents at top edge of rear board, very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light rubbing, minor edge wear/wrinkling.

297 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "The Romans at Pompeii, the Confederates at Richmond, and the German Jews in 1938 all had reason to believe that the world was ending. But when the storm had passed and the dust had cleared, no matter what the destruction, the world still turned. This fascinating collection contains works by diverse historians including Plato, Thucydides, Pliny, Leonardo da Vinci, John Donne, Freud, Mencken, and Picasso. Mary Chestnut writes in her diary as the Confederacy crumbles around her; Jack London describes the great earthquake that struck San Francisco in 1906; a Bolshevik watches the Winter Palace fall in 1917; a Polish poet fights for food in Auschwitz. Soldiers from every major war from ancient Rome through Vietnam march toward death; a writer toils while the Black Plague topples those around him; a monk watches the Aztec empire fall to the Spaniards; the Middle Passage defies humanity and life. The most famous episodes of human tragedy are described by the men and women who lived. them. With an introduction by Simon Schama, this fully illustrated anthology of first-person accounts of diaster from Thucydides to CNN, from Pompeii to the Holocaust, is as heartbreaking as it is inspiring, as terrifying as it is fascinating." New York Macmillan Large Print Edition. Very Good Good-
366 pp, 11 1/4" H. Dark blue cloth with silver, gold & copper lettering on spine. "This American classic, first published in 1904, is one of the finest novels of the sea ever written. The hero-narrator, Humphrey Van Weyden, is a literary critic and a man of leisure, who is wrecked while crossing San Francisco Bay in a ferryboat. He is carried out to sea, and is picked up by an outward bound sealing-schooner named the 'Ghost'. The Captain, called 'Wolf' Larsen because of his fiendish cruelty and furious temper, refuses to put Van Weyden ashore. Later, a beautiful girl, who has also been the victim of shipwreck, is rescued by the 'Ghost'. Together, she and Van Weyden go through some perilous and highly exciting adventures, in a story which will never lose its power to entertain. The background is completely authentic; Jack London was himself aboard a sealing boat in the Bering Sea and along the coast of Japan."
