ISBN 0134516427 "Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 color illustrations, the Atlas looks at the history of Jerusalem with maps, drawings, and isometric reconstructions, all updated with the latest archaeological evidence. Jerusalem is perhaps the most interesting city on earth. Sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, it dates back to at least the third millenium BCE. David made it his capital; Solomon glorified it with his Te mple; it fell to Babylonia in 586 BCE and was rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah; it was the city of the Maccabees and of the Herods, and the place where Jesus was tried and crucified. Titus razed its buildings and destroyed the Temple in 70 CE. A f t e r t he revolt of Bar Kochba, the Romans made Jerusalem a pagan shrine. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099; in 1187, Muslims, led by Saladin, captured the city and held it almost continuously until the British took control after World Wa r I. Th e B ritish Mandate ended in 1948 when the State of Israel was born. In 1967, Israel reunited the city. Special features in the Atlas include: concise, easy-to-read text; four-color illustrations, maps, drawings, and photos throughout ; de fi nit i ve an d a uthoritative information; selected bibliography of further readings; thorough index; an up-to-date approach, based on the latest findings. 447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Following his release, Wingfield had some intriguing adventures on the Upper Great Lakes before returning to England. Once home, he used his handwritten notes, kept during his time in North America, as the basis for an account of his experiences there. This, the only account of the War of 1812 as seen through the eyes of a young seaman, provides a fascinating snapshot of people and places, and of a time that represents a turning point in the history of the Great Lakes region. Also included is a Wingfield genealogical description that spans the modern world." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - one very soft small corner crease.

For almost two centuries the knights of the Order of the Temple had flourished during the Crusades in Palestine and Syria, and in the West, notably in France. But in 1307, the Templars in France were arrested by King Philip IV's officials in the name of the Inquisition, their property seized and the men charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality, and idol worship. Confessions, extracted under torture, were brought before royal and papal tribunals, but in 1310 a number of Templar brothers mounted a defence of their Order, refuelling the controveries which cont inued for a further four years before the final executions. Malcolm Barber's fascinating account, assessing the charges brought against the Order, once again puts the Templars on trial." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownersh i p m a r k s . 155 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "After more than four years of the most fearful war in the world's history, the end came almost unexpectedly, with dramatic suddenness. At five o'clock on the morning of November 11, 1918, Marshal Foch and Admiral Wemyss, representing the Allies, concluded an armistice with German civil and military representatives. There had been a general expectation that the war would last well into 1919. The author...examines the various factors that led to the earlier conclusion of the war. He analyzes conditions in the summer of 1918 following Ludendorff's massive offensive in March...also probes the plans of the Central Powers, the Allies, and the American Expeditionary Forces, emphasizing the range of disagreements on the methods by which German could be defeated. He then goes on to consider the first and second phases of the Allied offensives of August 1918, which at last cracked German resistance. Finally the Armistice itself is studied in detail. The penultimate chapter, which comments on military operations, includes the bizarre account of the Kaiser's unheralded arrival in Holland..." 320 pp, small 8vo (7 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "....gives a vivid picture of Robert Burns at the height of his creative powers, acclaimed as Scotland's national bard and yet bitterly aware of the empty glory of that fame so far as any worth-while improvement in his immediate prospects are concerned. He has left the scene of his brief triumph in the Edinburgh drawing-rooms. He is a farmer again, trying to wrest a living from the grudging soil of Ellisland . . . H e h a s very much on his mind the cares of a wife and family, for whom he is determined to make a home. Through these pages the sterling worth of Jean Armour shines like a star. Bonnie Jean has hitherto had scant justice paid to her by b io gr ap he rs . He re her character is limned with admiration and affection. One understands the strength of the bond between her and Burns, and how it could withstand the devastating impact of Burns's infatuation for Anna Park, the golden-haire d H ebe of th e G lo b e T ave rn in Dumfries....But the story is concerned too with Burns's intellectual development, not only as a poet but as a thinker peculiarly sensitive to the fresh political breezes that are blowing in so strongly from Fra nce. ...T he b ook ends wi th the aba ndonment of the farm and of the life he had known since boyhood, the never-ending struggle with the land; already the shadow of his last tragic years in Dumfies lies darkly across his path...." CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS., Barker, Ralph.
20 Barker, Ralph. CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS.
Methuen, London, 1987, first edition.
172 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0413423107 B&w photographs. "When the passenger liner 'City of Benares' sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Brit ain, bound under a government-sponsored scheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the c i v i l i s ed world. Of 406 people on board 256 were lost - including, at first count, 83 of the evacuee children. In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. N or w as t he propaganda value neglected, a broadcast by King George VI the day after the news broke being clearly directed at neutral America. 'The world,' he said, 'could have no clearer proof of the wickedness against which we fight than th is fou l d eed '. Su s picions subsequently arose, however, that the British authorities had quite as much to answer for as the Nazis. Parents who, despite many misgivings, had entrusted their children to the scheme when invasion threatened, began to ask que stio ns when t hey learned that the promised naval escort had abandoned the convoy twenty-one hours before the 'Benares' was sunk. Allegations that crew members rushed the boats, that emergency equipment had failed, and that the whol e vo yage had b een u nde rtake n u nder the blight of racial prejudice, demanded a formal investigation. But somehow this was avoided, and the scandal was successfully hushed up. Ralph Barker, after a vivid and poignant reconstruction of the disa ster, turn s his attent ion to wha t re ally happened behind the scenes at the Admiralty and the Ministry of Shipping. The result is a harrowing story of human fallibility and human survival." Light to moderate browning to pages and edges of text block , mino r wrin kling a t to p/botto m of spine. Dust jacket has two areas of light edge wrinkling, Very Good-/Very Good
