CHI-LI AND THE STOLEN CASKET., Haynes, Ambrose.
2 Haynes, Ambrose. CHI-LI AND THE STOLEN CASKET.
London Pickering & Inglis 1965 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good
128 pp, 7 3/8" H. Colour frontispiece. "Communists had come and Chi-li had to flee for his life, and join the stream of refugees trying to reach Hong Kong. On his journey he meets up with Chang, a thief and a brigand, but Chang saves Chi-li from death and, becoming fond of him, thinks he will be able to make Chi-li do what he wants. But Chang is not aware Chi-li is a Christian, and is not only surprised but angry when he refuses to take part in wrongdoing. Full of adventure, suspense and excitement this story is ideal, and we rejoice when Chi-li finally reaches 'The House of the Good Shepherd', is re-united with his parents, and best of all Chang becomes interested in the Christian way of life." Minor toning to pages, light toning to edges of text block, slight fading to spine colour, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, several edge tears (archivally taped) and tiny chips, 1/1/2" x 1/2" piece missing at top of rear panel, colours are still bright, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH., Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.)
3 Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.) MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH.
London David Stott 1887 Hard Cover Good- Inscribed by editor.
458 pp + (1) pp publisher's advertising, 9" H. Tissue-covered sepiatone frontispiece. Inscribed on half title page: "For dearest Louisechen / from her devoted Sister / Helena (underlined with a flourish) / July. 1887. (underlined)". Helena Augusta Victoria was Queen Victoria's 5th child and married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming Princess Christian. The British Royal family were fond of German diminutives and the 'Louisechen' of the inscription could have been her younger sister, Louise Caroline Alberta, or her Prussian sister-in-law, wife of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was referred to as 'Louisechen' in family papers. The Duke served as Governor General of Canada in 1911 and 'Duchess of Connaught' has been pencilled above 'Louisechen' at some time. An interesting association copy. Some small splits to paper on inside hinges, a few pages with soft wrinkling at top corner, scattered light foxing marks on preliminary pages and on two rear pages, book is lightly cocked, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, small slight bump at board corners, age/dust darkening to edges of text block - especially to the top, rubbing and soiling to boards.

Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1974 0771054505 / 9780771054501 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
190 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "(T)ells the story of Canada's Athabasca area in Northern Alberta. There, one of nature's mightiest rivers and the gigantic lake into which it flows have witnessed the exploits of fur-traders, explorers, missionaries and pioneers. Dr. MacGregor presents the region before the coming of the white man, the tentative beginnings of the fur-trade, the early explorations of Samuel Hearne and Peter Pond, the probing journeys of the voyageurs, the long and bitter rivalry between the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company for the rich fur resources of the region. Here are tales of advernturers and settlers, the scow brigades and sternwheeler crews, the railway builders and the airplane pilots, all of whom have set their mark on the region. Of special interest in the light of recent events, is the history of the development of the Athabasca oil sands, from its early beginnings at the turn of the (20th) century to the modern extraction complex of today." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on front hinge.

THE DIARY OF A COUNTRY PARSON., Woodforde, James. Selected by David Hughes.
10 Woodforde, James. Selected by David Hughes. THE DIARY OF A COUNTRY PARSON.
London Folio Society 1992 Ist Folio Printing. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Engravings by Ian Stephens.
445 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter dark blue buckram, maroon title labels with gilt lettering, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark red endpapers, light grey slipcase. 24 b&w wood-engravings by Ian Stephens printed in the text, including the frontispiece, plus six tail-pieces used multiple times. The Reverend James Woodforde began his diary simply to keep a record of expenses, but, "Luckily at an early point he decided to expand the text beyond mere expenditure to cover his doings, his regrets, his feelings both waspish and fond about the people he encountered, the social events that opened up in him a vein of generous pleasure or fury, the almost daily card games he lost or won, his casual preaching and praying amid none too large a congregation at his lonely church, his dark fancies at night, the illnesses with scant hope of cure in ice-cold rooms, the hunts and the shoots and the fishing, the tangles with servants, and the irritations with such close relatives as his niece Nancy who kept him company and his nephew Bill who had his eye on the maids -- ." A wonderful insight into eighteenth-century daily life in a handsome volume. Slipcase has a few tiny and small light soiling marks - mainly on one side panel.
