STAR TALES., Ridpath, Ian.
3 Ridpath, Ian. STAR TALES.
Universe Books, New York, 1988, First American edition.
161 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0876636946 B&w illustrations. "Every night a pageant of Greek mythology circles overhead. Perseus flies to the rescue of Andromeda, Orion faces the charge of the snorting Bull and the ship of the Argonauts sails in search of the Golden Fleece. Constellations are the invention of the human imagination, not of nature. They are an expression of the human desire to impress its own order upon the apparent chaos of the night s k y . T wentieth-century science has told us that these twinkling points of light are glowing balls of gas, but the ancient Greeks, to whom we owe many of our constellations, knew nothing of this. Ian Ridpath, well-known astronomy writer and br o ad ca st er , h as been intrigued by the myths of the stars for many years. 'Star Tales' is the first guide this century to combine all the fascinating myths in one books, illustrated with the beautiful and evocative engravings from two of the le adi ng sta r a tl a ses ; Johann Bode's 'Uranographia' of 1801 and John Flamsteed's 'Atlas Coelestis' of 1729. This is an excellent reference and the perfect gift for the armchair astronomer and those interested in classical mythology." Minor w rin klin g a t to p/bo tto m of s pine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, several tears with creases - mainly on rear cover and archivally taped, light fading to color on spine and hinge areas, a few tiny circular impressions on front panel.
