FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES., Arpin, P.E., foreword.
1 Arpin, P.E., foreword. FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES.
Ottawa Civil Aviation Branch, Department of Transport Soft Cover Very Good
112 pp + blank pages for notes, oblong (7 15/16" H x 10 1/2" D). No date. Erratum sheet laid in. "From aviation's earliest days, pilots of aircraft have been conscious of the need for accurate directional information. The development of the magnetic and gyro compass has, for general purposes, kept pace with aviation needs in most areas of the world. Flight operations in Northern Canada, however, present problems which are unique by virtue of the position of the North Magnetic Pole. - - In response to a need for the provision of directional information simply and to within one degree the Flight Standards and Regulations Division of the Civil Aviation Branch has arranged the development of these tables from which the Sun's True Bearing can be extracted directly knowing date, correct Local Civil time (within reasonable limits) and approximate Latitude and Longitude. - - It is also significant to note that these Tables are not limited to Canada only, but include any areas of the earth north of 40 degrees North Latitude, and for all practical purposes will maintain usable accuracy for an indefinite period." From the Foreword. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownwership marks. Exterior - small soiling mark on top of textblock, some very light rubbing/soiling on rear cover.

First six volumes of the Myth Series - with the first four books in a publisher's slipcase - 6 3/4" H. 1. Another Fine Myth - 200 pp, 1984 3rd printing, ISBN 0441023606 - "Skeeve was a magician's apprentice, until an assassin hired by an ancient enemy struck and his master was dead. Skeeve suddenly found himself alone with Aahz, a purple-tongued demon the old magician had summoned from another dimension as a practical joke just before he was killed. Aahz had lost his powers, Skeeve had lost his job. So together, they set out through a universe populated by Deveels (or devils), Imps, dragons, unicorns and more, looking for a way to get even." 2. Myth Conceptions - 217 pp, 1986 5th printing, ISBN 0441555209 - "Skeeve was summoned to the court of Roderick the Fifth of Possiltum to audition for the position of Court Magician. Unfortunately for everyone, he got the job. How was Aahz going to help Skeeve defend a kindgom against the mightiest invading army in the world? With his pet dragon Gleep and bewitching green-haired Tanda standing by, Skeeve waited for Aahz to come up with a solution. The problem was, if they won they would be executed - and if they lost they would be killed. What kind of magik could beat those odds?" 3. Myth Directions - 202 pp, 1985 1st printing, ISBN 044155525X - "The Trophy was unique, no question. It was easily the ugliest object Skeeve had ever seen in any dimension. And before landing his job as Court Magician, young Skeeve had seen a thing or two. But Tanda wanted it - and, as a rule, whatever the beautiful Tanda wants, Tanda gets. The problem is, getting it will take more than luck. It will take all the talents of a young but gifted magician, a scaley but canny Pervect, and a charming demon not above a little interdimensional thievery." 4. Hit or Myth - 170 pp, 1985 4th printing, ISBN 0441338518 - "King Roderick takes a powder - leaving Skeeve in his place to marry his homicidal fiancee Hemlock and face the tender mercies of Bruce, the Mob's fairy godfather who wants Skeeve working for him - or not at all. On top of that, Aahz has taken a forced vacation, a two-ton demon has a crush of Skeeve, and both Possiltum and Deva are about to be invaded." 5. Mything Persons - 172 pp, 1987 2nd printing, ISBN 0441552765 - "(Skeeve's) partner Aahz has disappeared and it looks like foul play. Finding Aahz ought to be a snap for a talented magician like Skeeve, especially with a sassy apprentice and a dumb but brawny bodyguard along for the ride. The trouble is, they're sleuthing in another dimension: a strange and chilly realm where day is night and humans are considered monsters. Add a murder rap, a couple of vampires, and the fact that magic doesn't work here, and you've got a trio in real hot water!" 6. Little Myth Marker - 167 pp, 1987 1st printing, ISBN 0441484999 - "(Skeeve) bluffs his way into a high-stakes game of dragon poker and, by some miracle, wins. Then, still flush with luck, (he) heads straight for the king of dragon poker, the Sen-Sen Ante Kid. And with a pot of half a million, there'd better not be any myth-deals. But even if Skeeve can hold his own in a high-stakes game, there's still Markie. Left as a pint-sized IOU by a player who went broke, she conjures a house full of trouble every time she tries to cast a spell. And to top it off, jealous magicians have hired the notorious assassin, The Axe, to cut more than the deck - ." Interiors - pages and some inside of covers have light to moderate browning, volume 3 has one page with small corner crease and volume 4 has two pages with small corner creases. Exteriors - some edges of text blocks have very light browning, slight browning to spines of four volumes, very light edge wear, volume 2 has a very light spine crease, volume 1 has a small faint stain on the bottom of the text block, volume 5 has a very small number stamped on bottom of text block, two volumes have slight spine lean. PRIVATE WORDS: LETTERS AND DIARIES FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Blythe, Ronald, ed.
4 Blythe, Ronald, ed. PRIVATE WORDS: LETTERS AND DIARIES FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Viking, London, 1991, first edition.
310 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0670832049 "The Second World War was, among other things, a great 'reading and writing' war. There was a passion for books of all kinds, and also a remarkable outpouring of personal w riting in the form of letters and diaries. The latter were actually forbidden in the services because they might fall into enemy hands, but this did not prevent them from being kept in startling quantities. The young especially, whether on t h e H o m e Front or fighting abroad, became extraordinary self-examiners and communicators, finding all kinds of outlets for what was happening to them in the shape of private records and correspondence. It was a time when people lived for let t er s, a n d wh en , since much of the war was spent in boredom by the average participant, reading became the perfect escape. The existence of a vast archive of Second World War personal literary expression has been well-known to historians, but i t h as not o ft en bee n used to reveal the significance of the 'reading and writing' culture of this period. Ronald Blythe has a deep understanding of those days and in this collection of letters and journals has revealed much of their heart a nd soul . Half of th e b ook is made up of the wartime writing of his friends; the other half has been drawn from the Department of Documents at the Imperial War Museum. This book is a personal statement that makes eloquent shifts from pain, desp air and de ath t o ab surd ity, lau ghter and bravery. It is a traveller's tale and a stay-at-home's tale. It is politically hopeful and romantic, and also down to earth. Read together, these confessions and descriptions from and to a Britain of nea rly h alf a cen tury ago c reate an a stonishing impact. We see a world holding itself together by language, by words, and with skill and determination. The 'tone' of those days is often quite unbearably caught, with force and eloquence. (T hey c reate) a m ultiple auto biogra phy of a uni que kind." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at top edge of rear panel. Fine/Near Fine

London Ian Allan 1988 071101714X / 9780711017146 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
144 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, floor plans, elevations. "It is almost impossible to describe a typical LNER country station - the nearest it is possible to come is to say that somewhere like Otterington was one, although it was certainly not typical. The problem of finding a common strain of styles arises from the diversity of the LNER's consituents, and its adoption of a policy of decentralised management. In addition to this, the relative poverty of the company mitigated against renewal and rebuilding. (This book) is structured along the lines of these constituent companies and, with the aid of over 170 photographs and 20 line drawings, (the author) relates the histories and unifying features of the many varied stations and branches in the LNER's area of operations." Light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, soft crease across bottom edge of rear panel, very small dint on rear hinge.

Atkins (George Chew "Tommy" Atkins), a fellow Columbia graduate and lawyer who moved to a farm in Ontario, Canada in 1921. 1. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated March 31/26. References the "sporty" proposition of exchanging Cane's first book of verse for some of Tommy's apples, commenting on Tommy's giving up of "this unproductive law activity and grow(ing) something worthwhile." In response to an invitation to visit Ontario, Cane says that he happens "to be the only person in America out of jail who hasn't a car." 2. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated April 7/26. References the arrival of the apples and the finding of three with soft spots, but continuing "if you find only three poems with soft spots, it'll be a stand-off." 3. Full sheet, typed, signed "Melville Cane", dated April 20th, 1926. Comments favorably on Tommy's idea of raising turkeys, but "do not expect epics from me in exchange." Mentions he has conveyed Tommy's greetings to Harcourt and Brace (Cane was on their board of directors). 4. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated 3/9/33. Comments on the university's (Columbia's), and the general, lack of appreciation for poets and mentioning that he is sending "a couple of specimens (of poetry) of different moods." (see below). 5. The first two pieces in this group have pencil notations at the bottom, probably by Tommy. WITH: a group of four poems. Three are typed on full sheets of paper, each with one correction in pen and one with a pencil quotation from a poem by John Erskine (a mutual friend). "Melville Cane" is typed at the bottom of each of these sheets, but they are NOT signed. The three poems ("Hymn to Night", "Petition" and "Ancient Organ Grinder") were later published in "A Wider Arc". "Hymn to Night" and "Ancient Organ Grider" were included with Cane's letter to Tommy of 3/9/33. The fourth poem, on a 3 1/4" square scrap of paper, is handwritten in ink, with crossings out and smears and refers to honeybees - it was tucked into "Behind Dark Spaces", at the dedication page, where Cane gives Tommy directions on where to send his honey. WITH: Three items relating to Bernard M.L. Ernst, Cane's long-time friend, fellow Columbia graduate and partner in the law firm of Ernst, Fox & Cane. Ernst was also president of the New York Branch of the Society American Magicians and Vice President of the Magicians' Club of London. 1. "an address / by Melville H. Cane / delivered at the funeral of / Bernard M.L. Ernst / at Earl Hall, Columbia / University, November 30, / 1938" - [8] pp (not including covers), stapled, 7 3/4" H. 2. 7 Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier. THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE.
Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS., Crowlesmith, J., Rev.
9 Crowlesmith, J., Rev. STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS.
London Aldine Hard Cover Good Fair H.S. Greig.
172 pp, 7 1/2" H. Red boards with black lettering/illustration on spine and front board. Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. No date, but Xmas greetings on free front endpaper dated 1936. "The stories that follow are taken from Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur', the great collection of romances about King Arthur which was written in the fifteenth century, and printed first of all by Caxton. Scholars say that Arthur was a British hero, one of the leaders of the Britons against the English invaders in the sixth century. In course of time legends centred round his name in the memory of the defeated race. To the original stories the Middle Ages added others, some of which belonged to later heroes, and, finally, these were combined with various legends of the Christian Church about the finding of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ is said to have drunk at the Last Supper with His disciples. Thus we get the beautiful cycle of romances which shines in the pages of Malory's great book. This version has been written for younger children. As far as possible the old-world style of Malory's narrative has been preserved, while the stories chosen are those which seem to present a message to youth." Contents: Introduction; The Sword in the Stone; King Arthur sees a Strange Knight; The Sword Excalibur; Balin, the Poor Knight; The Invisible Knight; The Battle of the Brothers; The Table Round; The Merciful Knight; The Death of Merlin; King Arthur and Accolon; The Lady of the Lake; The Marvellous Giant; The Two Giants; The Disguised Knight; The Shipwreck of Sir Lamorak; Launcelot and the Dragon; Sir Bors in the Castle Adventurous; Sir Gawaine's Rescue; The Knight with the Ugly Coat; Sir Tristram and King Mark; The Story of Sir Alisander; When Sir Launcelot was Mad; Seeking the Holy Grail; Sir Galahad's Shield; Sir Launcelot and the Holy Grail; Sir Percivale and the Lion; The Holy Grail is Seen; Fed by the Holy Grail; The Death of Sir Galahad; The Poisoned Apple; The Lady of Astolat; End of the Table Round; The Death of Arthur. "Whether among the first three to charge the French guns at Medellin, leading his troopers into the enemy ranks at Salamanca, or evolving order out of the chaos that bedevill ed the Portuguese Army in 1809, Sir Benjamin D'Urban was not only a brave and resolute soldier but also a painstaking and highly efficient Chief of Staff to Marshal Beresford. Finding, on arrival at Corunna in October 1808, that he had been a p p o i n t ed to that part of the Army left behind in Portugal, D'Urban set out to meet Sir John Moore in the hope of receiving fresh orders. This was the beginning of six years of unbroken service which included taking part in ten battles and s ie ge s. Af te r a short period as Staff Officer to Sir Robert Wilson, he was appointed Colonel and QMG to the Portuguese Army by Marshal Beresford in April 1809. The 'Journals' give a day to day summary of the Peninsular Campaign, which was found in val uab l e b y S ir Charles Oman, and provides a counter to what D'Urban considered unfair criticism of Beresford by Sir Charles Napier. Long out of print, this unique record of events fills a need for everyone interested in the campaigns of 1809 -181 5, p ar ticu larl y i n regard to the operations of the Right Wing of the Allied Army and of the part played by the Portuguese Army, which has not always received the credit due for some of its major exploits." 11 de la Roche, Mazo. RINGING THE CHANGES: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
Macmillan Company of Canada, Toronto, 1957, first edition.
304 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Jalna, the tremendous tribe of Whiteoaks, the distant Canadian background, with its maple trees, its great lake, its fascinating mixture of primitive outdoors and civilised comfo rt: was it from such a background that Mazo de la Roche sprang? In this long family chronicle stretching from generation to generation, has she been telling us something of herself? (This book) answers these questions. Here is a vivid re-cr e a t i o n of (her) life, in some ways so like the life of a Whiteoak, but always individual and characteristic. The background is the same, the beautiful section of Ontario that borders on one of the great Canadian lakes, but the experience is d if fe re nt . S he gives us a spontaneously written account of the rather strange childhood of one who was born with the writer's eye, who grew to use her gifts, and for whom discerning Fortune gave the opportunity of finding a world-wide audience, ap pro ach ed in so many languages, retained through so many years. - But (it) is not only about a writer's work. It is a story of friendships and travel, of animal friends as well as human ones; and of a perfect companionship that has endured n earl y a life tim e, and is honoured in the dedicatory inscription to the book." "At first light on the morning of Ist January 1945, over 800 Luftwaffe fighters took off from their bases in Germany to attack Allied airfields in Holland, Belgium and France. Some of these surprise attacks proved successful, some were hardly noticed, while others were disastrous for the attackers. Basing his account on information from both Wing and Squadron diaries, and with many first-hand account s from the men who were there, Norman Franks paints a definitive picture of that winter morning and the rest of the day. In these attacks, and in the air battles which were fought at low level across the open countrysides and over towns in t h e L o w Countries, the Luftwaffe lost up to 300 of their fighter aircraft and over 200 pilots were killed or taken prisoner. The Allied air forces lost some 200 aircraft with little loss of life and were able to replace their losses within d ay s, w h er ea s t he Luftwaffe had greater difficulty in finding new pilots. Operation Bodenplatte was planned as a lightening blow to smash the British and American forces in north-west Europe. In fact it turned out to be the Luftwaffe's fin al ac t o f s el f-d est ru ct ion." Tiny scuff to bottom of front board. Dust jacket has minor rubbing. This is a new unread book.
